Day One
Who: Dean Winchester & The Doctor
What: Day One, waking up
When: Sometime during daylight hours, not sure because of the misty muck
Where: In the forest, nearest landmark: gas station/convenience store
Rating: TBA (language)
Status: Dropped

Dean woke with a start. He sat up too fast with a shout and nearly fell back down again as his mind fuzzed in and out dizzily. He wasn't sure at first what had happened. What had startled him awake. Then he noticed the ugly gray misty foggy mess that surrounded him. It was cold. His breath plumed out in a billow from his mouth when he gasped and rubbed his temples. The last thing he could remember was lying down to sleep on the hotel bed. Hadn't even bothered to take of his boots or his jacket. Just went to sleep staring up at the ceiling as the Johnnie Walker Blue Label sloshed nauseatingly on the nightsand in time to the rocking of a train passing too closely.

Groaning, Dean looked around. "Definitely too much to drink last night," he grumbled. It wasn't the first time he'd woken up in a strange place, but it was the first time it'd been out in the forest in the middle of nowhere. Patting his pockets, he felt for his gun. Lola should've been right there beside him but his sawed off double barelled shotgun was nowhere. What the hell was going on? He could not have wandered here while sleeping. No chance. Something wasn't right and he was pretty sure there was a demon behind it.

Unsteadily he got to his feet and turned a circle, looking around to get his bearings. "Hello? What the hell is going on?!" he shouted into the tree tops. Turning again, he noticed that he wasn't alone. Someone else was there in the forest with him. "Hey, buddy. I don't know what game you're playing but you better prepare yourself for a good asskicking."

Nonplussed by the Doctor's speech and the steely look in his eyes, Dean's jaw kind of fell open for a moment. Then he recovered enough to close his expression as well as his mouth. "Now that's a new one. What are you, some kind of errant god? Or I don't know, djinn?" Those were the only references that he could pull from his own repertoire. His tone was respectful because something in the tone of voice the other man had used rang true in his ears. The explanation was succinct without the wordy overly dramatic nonsense someone who was unhinged would have used.

The entire situation was beyond Dean's control which was bad enough as it was because he felt like he needed to protect and fight. That was what he'd been trained to do. What was worse now was that he fully believed this man was not exactly a man. At least not a human anyway. When he'd gotten the Doctor's entire focus he had felt the gravity of what the Doctor had been through. And if Dean wasn't being taken in, and he didn't think he was, the guy had survived far worse than waking up in the woods near a gas station. Which probably meant this was far worse than waking up in the woods near a gas station.

"Shit," he whispered. Then, "Alright. Lead on, Doctor," he said quietly, almost under his breath.

"I'm just the Doctor," he said quietly, the metallic tinge to the air made him feel like he'd been dropped into the middle of an industrial zone.

The world sloshed by beneath his heavy feet in silence punctuated only by the noise of the mud beneath their feet. He'd let his temper get the best of him, and for what? To put Dean in his place, that just wasn't right. Stepping foot onto the pavement cement of the station's lot. The pumps looked long out of service and it was fairly clear that this place hadn't been maintained in a very long time.

The world, it seemed had opened up a bit, the gas station wasn't the only building within eyeshot and it was hard for the Doctor not to want to explore those as well.

"Would you look at that, a whole town..." He said this quietly, looking over his shoulder at Dean. For a moment the thought of an apology went fleetingly through his mind. What would he say, 'Sorry there, Dean, didn't mean to snap like that,' or 'Oh, sometimes my 900 year old brain just gets the best of me,' it all sounded silly, even to the Doctor.

"First things first, hm?"

Just the Doctor again. Except this time that didn't sound funny to Dean. It sounded ominous. Just who was he with here? The guy obviously wanted to maintain some anonymity which was actually fine with Dean. Sometimes you didn't need to know everything because everything might be horrifying. It took a lot to horrify Dean but he couldn't get the Doctor's expression as he talked about genocide from his mind. The dude had seen things that would horrify Dean, that was for certain.

The gas station turned out to be sort of retro and very run down. He didn't miss the fact that there were other buildings. A whole town, as the Doctor put it. That made Dean's skin crawl. Who had an entire town to plunk two people down into and why?

"One thing at a time, dude," was all he said and in the same quietly, respectful tone. He walked up to one of the windows of the station and wiped a clean smudge into the grime to peer inside. There was some sort of convenience store in there. He couldn't be sure but it looked like there was food and other stuff in there. Again he thought it had to be a trap but he was way out of his element here. He glanced to the Doctor. "I think there's food and water and stuff in here."

Following Dean up to the window he looked in past the dirt and tried to make out the interior. It was a store, and it looked to be little more than just the room. Sure, it looked like there was a loo and a back office; but, it wasn't like the place was extremely substantial.

This place was starting to give him the willies - and that didn't happen very often. Even the little hairs were standing up on the back of his neck, and that fact he blamed partially on Dean's inherent paranoia rubbing off on him.

"Well, we came all this way," he said, looking to the door and then back to the woods. It was nice not to be standing in the middle of a mud puddle finally. There was something fiery about Dean, and he didn't want that to be quashed - it certainly made him a bit more interesting.

Walking up to the door he tugged at it and the hinges worked with a squeal. So much for being careful. The noise made the Doctor wince a bit, the edginess only starting to feel worse as he popped his head inside.

"Hello there," he said fondly, stepping inside to greet a raccoon who'd blink at him and then scurry out a hole in the crumbling wall. "Seems safe enough for the raccoon," he said to Dean, holding the door open behind him as he tried to take stock of the rather rancid smelling room.

"Yeah but I'm guessing they wouldn't shoot a raccoon if they could have a human," Dean said with a slight smile. He was half joking at this point because it seemed now that his first impression of the gas station being a trap with evil beings waiting with guns or athames raised had been silly. He didn't trust easily but he felt himself beginning to think maybe the Doctor's instincts were a bit sharper than his own. That bruised his ego slightly but not enough to make him reject the other man's logic. It was pretty sound so far.

Walking in behind the Doctor, Dean looked around the tiny room. The paint was peeling on the walls and there was a racy biker babe calendar on the wall above the till. There was no hum of electricity from the coolers against the wall and the clock on the wall was still.

He walked over to the coolers and then glanced over at the other man. "Beer and soda. Either they want us drunk or hyper. I think I'll stick to water, what about you?" As nice as it would have been to have a beer, this was neither the time nor place to stop and have one as far as he was concerned. But the fact that someone had thought it fit to give them beverage choices sort of made Dean think they were supposed to be here for a while. He did not like that thought and he wondered if the Doctor would draw the same conclusion.

The Doctor didn't respond to Dean's comment. It was clear that he was used to dealing with some very nasty things that didn't cut to the chase as quickly as the Dalek's or Cybermen.

He was looking over the empty shelves, wondering just what happened to all the stock - did someone take off with it? Had it just been depleted and left to rot?

Hearing Dean near the cooler he looked up over a former chip stand. "Beer amd soda?" he questioned. "Water's fine," he said, not one for alcohol, and generally not too big a fan of the fizzy drinks. "They've certainly gone to a lot of trouble, haven't they?" The Doctor asked, taking up an old newspaper and starting to wipe the mud from his shoes.

"What do you do when you're not wandering around in the woods and gas stations?"

"Yeah, they really have gone to a lot of trouble here," Dean answered solemnly. He was noticing the candy on a shelf near the front of the store. Four of everything it looked like. That was careful planning. It was really not good either. You didn't plan something like this for a couple hours good time. This was more long term. This was... he didn't want to think about that anymore.

He watched the Doctor wipe his sneakers for a moment, noticing the muddy trail of footprints they'd both left on the floor. A few minutes before he would have been angry with himself for leaving such a simple trail leading right to himself. Now it didn't seem to matter.

"I hunt," he answered and turned back to the cooler to pull out two bottles of water. He already had one in his pack and so did the Doctor but it didn't hurt to have another just in case. He mused about whether or not to explain further for a moment before shutting the door again. "I find demons, ghosts and monsters that terrorize innocent people and I get rid of them."

First the drinks, then the candy. All they needed to find were a couple of sleeping bags and the Doctor would be more thoroughly convinced that this place was entirely a prison.

"Demons and things? Does that mean you're pretty well acquainted with Latin?" He asked this because while he recognized the phrase as Latin, the translation was evading him for the moment. In his hearts, the Doctor knew there was a clue there.

"It sounds like you do a lot of good," he said genuinely.

Giving in he took off his shoes, the trainers feeling far too heavy. The mud was caked thoroughly and he had no choice but to clean them off with the newspaper. "My favorite pair," he said sort of grimly.

Dean walked to the Doctor and set the bottle of water he'd taken from the coolor for him in the newspaper stand so that he could wander around and look at this place a little more. It was feeling more and more claustrophobic the more planning he could see. And in his mind he kept thinking this is not good, this is not so very not good.

"Demons and things," Dean affirmed, nodding his head as he leaned over the front counter to look past the till at anything that might be behind. He glanced over his shoulder at the Doctor and answered, "I've had to use latin some to get rid of things but it was usually written down and not translated. I'm guessing you asked because of the logo on our packs. Vas Captio. I've seen captio in incantations before. I think it means captive or capture or something like that." Which was a guess since the words looked similar.

"Sorry about your shoes, man. Maybe whoever they are that brought us here left you a new pair somewhere..."
