Day 10: Museum - 1:15pm
Who: OTA
What: Seven point five
When: 1:15pm - 5:00pm
Where: the Museum
Rating: TBA
Status: Active

The sun was shining high in the sky and a gentle breeze stroked the leaves of the trees, making them, along with the severed stub of rope on the clock face from the day previous sway lazily. It was quiet. Perhaps it was too quiet, for the lack of birds chirping or insects buzzing.

All in all, the day was one of the most pleasant as of yet for the bulk of the involuntary residents of Vas Captio, save, of course, the heat. Maybe it was a bit too hot to be entirely comfortable.

It started small, as most things do. A few of the sculptures rattled against the glass displays encasing them and the loose windows in some of the rooms jittered anxiously in their frames. The floor seemed to wiggle gently but then, all was quiet and immobile again.

As if to protest the stillness of the museum, a great angry shudder rumbled through the foundation. Some of the wooden floorboards seemed to shoot upward as they snapped in half or into pieces, jutting up from the floor. The whole building dropped down as its weak foundation crumbled beneath it, creating the sensation of a very short elevator drop. Glass shattered loudly, throwing about shards sharp as knives and raining them down into the floors or walls as if tossed by a knife-thrower. The doors of the multiple rooms flew open, some ripping off their hinges entirely and others being slammed angrily shut again when large display cases made of wood and metal were thrown against them.

The sound of shattering glass echoed through the place as displays were destroyed completely sending still more shards of what remained everywhere, creating somewhat of a death trap, especially in the main lobby where the bulk of the displays remained. That sound was skewed until it was nearly drowned out completely as the roar of metal supports trying to hold and failing came to fruition and the entire building's worth of ceiling space collapsed in. Some of the doorways managed to hold up - those in which the doors were jammed in place by felled display cases - while others caved in under the weight of the falling debris and the loss of structure when the museum dropped from its foundation to the ground a few feet below. Almost as quickly as everything began, the movement dropped away.

Vas Captio was still, again, and silent once more.

Oh.

Oh no. No no no. This .. no. Not again!

Ianto reached blood sticky fingers towards the very still form under the rubble, but came up very short. So, as painful as it was, Ianto turned away and began to scrabble at the rubble and stone pinning him down, shoving it out of the way. He made very little headway, though, stopping far too often to go limp and pant. Every breath made his head pound and spin and he felt an awful lot like he was going to throw up.

Not a very good day, no.

When he lay back down again, Ianto wiggled fingers and toes, despite the fact that it cause him to gray out a little, and waited, trying to swallow the distressed sounds he kept wanting to make.

The cold, dark void. How well Jack knew it. He'd have called it an old friend if he felt that way about it. Really, though, it was the enemy he'd seen too often -- the teasing taste of what lay beyond and what he was never permitted to see. Suspended in the inky blackness, Jack had no feeling -- only that he wasn't returned immediately to the land of the earth.

Just how bad were his injuries? Jack tried to pull himself, tried to find any pinprick of light to cement himself to but could find nothing.

Don't worry, the pain won't last for long.

'Gray?' The words were thick on his tongue, reverberating in the shell of his mind, bouncing endlessly. He turned his head from side to side, sensing nothing the oppressive dark, pushing in from all angles. 'Gray, why did you do this?'

Not I. This wasn't my doing. This is your doing.

'I didn't! I did nothing! I tried to find you!'

The lies we tell ourselves, Jack. The lies we tell ourselves.

It took Ianto quite some time to dislodge the rocks and rubble that were strewn over his arm, but he did manage it. There was no way he could tell how long it took, though. Time was reduced to pants and throbbing in his head and arm and how often he needed to lay still to keep the world from being swallowed up by the black. Eventually, though, he won free.

Clutching his injured arm against his chest, Ianto swayed over towards the limp body under the pillar and braced his shoulder against it. Spots swam in his eyes along with tears, but Ianto ignored them all. He had a mission. Unbury Jack.

This process was just as slow as unburying himself had been, and more than once Ianto stopped and rest his head against the still chest to try and gather himself. Outwardly, he seemed hurt but alright. Inside, though, he was a gibbering mess.

'They're not lies. I tried' to find you. I spent years searching.'

If you wanted to find me, you could've. But you never should have let go of my hand.

'I didn't mean to! It all happened so fast! I thought you were with me.'

It should have been you. It should have been you.

The words echoed for what seemed like an eternity. The dark pressed in, suffocating Jack if he was breathing as the icy hand of death wrapped around his throat. Pulling and tugging, Jack recognised the all-too familiar feeling of being pulled back to life. Pain started seeping in, the pressure of rubble and stone and everything else still pressing on his torso. Enough to be painful, but not enough to kill.

Gasping in that first breath of air, it was mixed with a cry of pain, grunting as his oxygen deprived lungs refilled with air. Fuck. The ability to come back to life really should have come with the accompanying 'freedome from pain'. Now... he had to get out of this mess and find Ianto.

At the moment where Jack was taking in his first gasping breath and kickstarting his heart back into life, Ianto was laying with his head on Jack's chest, trying to scrape together enough energy to start again with the rubble shifting. His head went up, giving Jack the space to flail and gasp himself awake and aware and when Jack stilled, Ianto's very pale face came into view. A trickle of blood made its way down one side of his face and his hair was matted with the stuff.

"Oh, thank God," he croaked, and went about pushing rubble again one handed. "You.. I hate when you die.." His voice had a disconnected quality to it, but then it was possible he was in shock. Hell. The whole place was in shock.

Another deep breath and Jack began to feel a bit more like himself -- if feeling normal included having rubble all over one's body and an arm bent at a very awkward angle. At least no body part had been severed, all Jack had to worry about was the healing of the broken bones. Sooner he dragged himself out from under the rubble, the better.

Ianto's face came into focus and Jack released a deep breath of precious oxygen. He was okay. A bit more worse for the wear, but okay. However, Jack knew they needed to get Ianto some place safe before he lost any more blood. "I'm okay," Jack gasped, torn between reaching for Ianto or getting himself out. Out first, reunion later. Pushing away the memories of digging himself out of rubble, Jack moved what he could with one good arm, slowly pulling himself out from beneath the stones. "Are you...?" He brushed the trickle of blood away, eyes searching Ianto's face and looking for any obvious injuries. "You're okay?"

Healing bones for the Captain wasn't too bad, not when he had just come back from the dark. Ianto manhandled his limbs as best he could, trying to straighten everything out, up to and including his clothing. His mind was racing around in tiny little confused circles and Ianto had no idea if he should stop it or not.

He did force a smile to his face and nodded very carefully at Jack. A rapid bob of his head'd send him sprawling on the ground, he felt. "I'm okay," he assured Jack, mainly because he had to. Besides, if he wasn't okay, what could they do? Where could they take him? "My arm's hurt and I took a knock to the head, but I'm okay. The .. the ceiling fell in," he added, in case Jack wasn't aware.

The healing bones right now was the least of Jack's worries -- in the museum there were countless others (oh god, where was Shannon) and who knew how they had fared in the end? Jack swallowed the first wave of panic, trying to get his own head screwed on straight (not to mention a few of his limbs too). Even though Ianto said he was okay, Jack didn't believe it for a second.

Not with that much blood.

Jack looked up, squinting when seeing sky above himself. "Right. That's where all this came from." Jack cracked his neck loudly, feeling a few vertebrae slide back into place at the same time. Wincing, Jack could feel the skin of his cheek knitting back together. That was always the strangest feeling of all. "I think you took more than just a knock." Jack winced. "So did I for that matter." Jack stayed where he was for the present, letting the rest of the room get back into focus. "Now that you told me what I wanted to hear, how are you? Without the sugar coating."

He would ask for that, wouldn't he? The bare bones truth. Ianto levered himself into a more comfortable position and cradled his bad arm with his good. Now that Jack was up and firing on all cylinders, Ianto would let him do the bloody work. He was tired. "Concussed. I think my arm's fractured, but I don't know for certain. I'm .. bleeding, too, but that's obvious. I'm very tired and I want to sleep." Which meant that he had to stay awake. Ianto remembered these drills when he first started in Torchwood.

"But there's nothing we can do beyond basic first aid and there are others who need help," he insisted. They could bandage him up and prop him up somewhere relatively safe and Jack could go haring off to rescue the rest of the population. Shannon was out there somewhere. And Watanuki. And the Doctor. And all the people he's talked to in the journals. They needed help and at a time like this, Ianto couldn't justify sitting back and letting Jack squander his energies on him. It was the Torchwood in him.

"Just .. just help me bandage up the worst of it. You have to find the others. There are others in here. Shannon." Ianto swayed a little where he sat, but not badly and if he was lucky Jack wouldn't notice. He had a lot to worry about, after all.

Yes, Jack would ask that all too important question -- because Ianto's health was (presently) at the forefront in Jack's mind. God, if anything happened to him, the Powers that Be would be dealing with one very pissed off Time Agent. "We need to get that looked at," Jack said, looking down at his arm. "There are a couple doctors around, but who knows how bad they were hurt... or how bad things are across town for that matter."

The concern was etched in the lines of Jack's face and, try as he might, he couldn't shake the expression. He was damn near petrified about Ianto's health -- but in this, he wouldn't be of any good to anyone. Right. Time to get going. "I don't know how many were here tonight either," Jack said, frowning. "Jenny and Shannon..." Jack's head flicked towards where the door should have been. "Sarah Jane..." Jack's breath caught in his throat. After he left her, there was no way of knowing where she was.

First ripping a small corner of the blanket, Jack mopped a bit of blood from Ianto's face before tossing it aside. Then, tearing a bit of the blanket, Jack made something that would serve as a make-shift sling. Lightly kissing his cheek, wanting that tiny bit of reassurance that Ianto was okay, Jack tied the sling around his neck. "That'll have to do for now, until --"

He heard it, someone shouting. He couldn't place who it was, but it didn't matter. There were survivors and they had to go be the rescue party. Jack's head wasn't as fuzzy anymore and he could feel the rest of his limbs moving back as they should. "Someone... are you okay to move?" Jack flicked his head up towards the sky. "I don't know how stable this place is and I don't want to leave you."

"We'll find them," Ianto assured Jack and sighed a little as his arm was slipped into the makeshift sling. That took some of the pressure off of it and eased up some of the pain shooting through him. It did nothing for his head, but with even a little of the pain gone, he could function better, he felt. "I'm alright," or as alright as he could get at this point. Ianto's smile warmed a bit and while it was wan, it was genuine.

At least, until the yelling started. His head lifted, face aimed for the door. "Yes. We've got to get people out of here. I'm okay at least until that long." Though once everyone was safe, Ianto planned on passing out for a bit. He carefully levered himself to his feet and glanced around for anything useful, but beyond the blankets, everything was smashed. Thinning his lips, he offered Jack a hand up and stayed close as they made their way out the door.
