Day 10: Museum - 1:15pm
Who: OTA
What: Seven point five
When: 1:15pm - 5:00pm
Where: the Museum
Rating: TBA
Status: Active

The sun was shining high in the sky and a gentle breeze stroked the leaves of the trees, making them, along with the severed stub of rope on the clock face from the day previous sway lazily. It was quiet. Perhaps it was too quiet, for the lack of birds chirping or insects buzzing.

All in all, the day was one of the most pleasant as of yet for the bulk of the involuntary residents of Vas Captio, save, of course, the heat. Maybe it was a bit too hot to be entirely comfortable.

It started small, as most things do. A few of the sculptures rattled against the glass displays encasing them and the loose windows in some of the rooms jittered anxiously in their frames. The floor seemed to wiggle gently but then, all was quiet and immobile again.

As if to protest the stillness of the museum, a great angry shudder rumbled through the foundation. Some of the wooden floorboards seemed to shoot upward as they snapped in half or into pieces, jutting up from the floor. The whole building dropped down as its weak foundation crumbled beneath it, creating the sensation of a very short elevator drop. Glass shattered loudly, throwing about shards sharp as knives and raining them down into the floors or walls as if tossed by a knife-thrower. The doors of the multiple rooms flew open, some ripping off their hinges entirely and others being slammed angrily shut again when large display cases made of wood and metal were thrown against them.

The sound of shattering glass echoed through the place as displays were destroyed completely sending still more shards of what remained everywhere, creating somewhat of a death trap, especially in the main lobby where the bulk of the displays remained. That sound was skewed until it was nearly drowned out completely as the roar of metal supports trying to hold and failing came to fruition and the entire building's worth of ceiling space collapsed in. Some of the doorways managed to hold up - those in which the doors were jammed in place by felled display cases - while others caved in under the weight of the falling debris and the loss of structure when the museum dropped from its foundation to the ground a few feet below. Almost as quickly as everything began, the movement dropped away.

Vas Captio was still, again, and silent once more.

After excusing herself from Sarah Jane and Ripley, Shannon finished gathering her food and a bottle of water, then headed into the room she had shared with Sam, locking herself inside. Munching on her SlimFast bar, Shannon opened her journal and leafed through. "Slow day," she thought aloud and then noticed a page in Sam's handwriting marked just for her and asking if they could talk.

He said, after she asked what was up, that he wanted to talk in person and so she agreed. She wondered if he was upset that she'd gotten so distant, especially when she'd been in the presence of the two of them in the gym, the other day. When Dean had been the one to take her there and dump her to be Sam's burden again. Shannon's stomach turned as she wondered if Dean had told, during whatever conversation it was that they'd had, what had happened in the showers what seemed like forever ago.

All she could do, though, was wait, so that was what she did, finishing the SlimFast bar, taking a sip of her water, and laying back on the floor, staring at the ceiling. He'd come when he came, she'd let him in, and they'd talk, for better or worse, she supposed.

When Sam had woken early and by himself he'd decided that he'd needed to get away from the museum for a while. He didn't want to go to the church and talk to Andy, since he was half afraid Andy would ask him if he'd talked to Shannon and he would have to say no. He'd decided to wait and see if maybe he'd been jumping to conclusions, but when Shannon hadn't returned for the second night in a row he thought he'd received some kind of answer. He just wasn't sure what.

He'd walked the town alone, able to enjoy the warm weather beating down on him this time without the aid of sunglasses, and weighed the advice Andy had given him the day before. If anyone knew what Sam was feeling that moment it was Andy, since his situation with Luna wasn't exactly the same but close enough. Finally, when he was beginning to get warm and he'd weight the pros and cons of being direct with Shannon he decided to take his friend's advice and ask Shannon if they could talk.

The walk back to the museum was shorter than he thought and he found himself at the door to their room - since he thought of it more that way than simply his own - much sooner than he anticipated. He took a deep breath and knocked, a moment later hearing the scrape of something moving from behind the door and when the sound stopped he slipped inside. He gave her a nervous smile, suddenly feeling like maybe this was a bad idea.

"Here, let me," he said, pushing the display case back against the door and then turning towards her. There was a moment of awkward silence and then Sam forced his mouth to move.

"Shannon, I think maybe I owe you an apology," he said, his brow furrowing as he reached up and tugged at his collar. "If I've made you uncomfortable in any way, I'm sorry." He swallowed. "I mean, it's sort of been you and me from the beginning and I don't know if I'm taking this buddy thing too seriously, but I can't really think of any other reason why you wouldn't tell me you weren't coming back to the room, except that I'd done something to upset you." He frowned, this wasn't coming out right at all. "Not that I need know where you're at at all times," he said quickly. "I just..." He sighed, looking slightly embarrassed. "I worry."

At the sound of a knock on the door, Shannon felt her stomach flip-flop nervously as she got to her feet. Please don't let Dean have told... she thought miserably as she crossed the room and, with effort, pushed the barricade away from the door. She stepped back, then, and a moment later, Sam let himself in. She gave him a small, sheepish smile and shifted her weight from one foot to another before moving forward to push the barricade back. She stopped when Sam offered and did so instead.

And then there was an awful, awkward, beyond uncomfortable silence between them before Shannon almost opened her mouth to ask Sam what it was he wanted to talk about. Except, Sam beat her to the punch. An apology? Shannon blinked stupidly at him and shook her head, even as he went on talking. "No, no!" she insisted. "No, you didn't do anything wrong," she added quickly.

He went on to say that he couldn't think of a reason why she wouldn't have told him before slipping off to Ianto and Jack's room and her heart and stomach sank with guilt. Especially when he went on to say that he worried about her. "Please don't be sorry, Sam," she said quickly. "I'm sorry if I made you worry. It was just, you know, I thought I'd give you a break. I know I'm a burden, you know, I always have been and I probably always will be, but this time, I had a chance to give the caretaker a break, so I took it. I should've said where I was going, though, and--"

Shannon stopped talking, feeling the floor shudder gently beneath her feet. Earthquake she thought immediately, eyes widening in terror. Sam had barricaded the door; by the time they moved the display, it would be too late to hide in the doorway. She didn't have time to consider anything else. The window on the wall shattered loudly as the room jolted and then dropped. Shannon reached out to grab Sam to keep her balance, only she was knocked backward, arms flailing uselessly before she hit the floor, yelping in pain as a split floorboard jabbed her roughly in the side, sinking into her skin and drawing blood. The ceiling, then, creaked dangerously and Shannon closed her eyes, rolling over onto her stomach and covering her head as it caved in around her. The last thing she thought before she felt a support beam slam into her back and head was, please not again... because she couldn't hear Sam against the screaming in the other room - Jenny, she thought fleetingly - and the roar of the destruction around her.

The breath was knocked out of her and she couldn't breathe anyway, her lungs constricting in protest from the dust in the air and her head swam with dizziness. Sam! she tried to shout to check on him, but all that came out was a wheeze as tears sprang to her eyes and she was forced to close them.

Sam was already shaking his head, as Shannon said she was a burden, waiting for his turn to speak and trying to formulate a response that would alleviate Shannon of any worries that she was any kind of inconvenience to him. She was the opposite, really. Which was why her not being there had bothered him so much. Which was why he was having this conversation with her in the first place.

He felt the tremor and met her eyes, knowing instantly that she recognized it too. The door was useless and his mind strained to think of other places to be during an earthquake. "The corner!" He yelled out, pointing towards a corner of the room as the window shattered, raining down glass on top of them.

Sam reached out for Shannon, yelling her name, but she went falling backwards as he stumbled forward, his foot getting jammed in the widening knothole he'd put his torch so many times before. He heard the scrape of wood on wood and turned just in time to see the display case sliding towards him on the now slanted floor. He only had time to jerk his foot out of the hole and cover his head a split second before the case slammed into him, sending him and it crashing to the floor. Glass seemed to explode all around him and then seconds later the ceiling collapsed, support beams falling like timber. He looked up just in time to see a support beam slam into Shannon. He yelled her name, his voice mixing in with the sound of the falling ceiling and the screams from the next room. He struggled to move forward under the weight of the display case but a large piece of plaster fell, catching him on the right shoulder and head and he stilled, the world going momentarily black.

Wheezing and gasping for air when her breath raggedly returned to her, Shannon let out a low moan of agony. "Sam?" she choked. Everything was suddenly too quiet. "Sam," she sobbed out again, trying to turn her head to look where she'd seen him last.

Her backpack's shoulder strap was visible in her line of sight, hiding beneath the rubble of the ruined ceiling and her breath caught in her throat again as tears rolled down her dirty cheeks. The inhalers were in there, but it was too far away to reach. Her side throbbed, hot and sticky with blood as she clawed her way a few inches forward, hissing in pain when one of her fingernails snapped right down to the quick under her weight.

Dizzy with breathlessness and what was probably a slight concussion, Shannon reached back with her good hand and tried to push the support beam off her. With a little bit of effort and a lot of pain, she managed it and rolled onto her back again, pulling herself up into a seated position. She squeezed her eyes shut and pulled the broken off floor board from her side, whimpering as she pushed on the open wound with both hands to try and help the blood clot. It wasn't gushing and it didn't seem terribly deep, but it hurt like hell and the blood was making her squeamish.

Instead of dwelling on it, she looked around the room, breathing in through her nose and back out her mouth to try and calm herself out of the asthma attack taking hold. Sam was a few feet away lying on the floor pinned beneath the display case they'd used to hold the door shut. He wasn't moving and Shannon could already see the hair on the side of his head matted there, dark and wet. Wheezing loudly as she took a deep breath in through her mouth, Shannon moved to her hands and knees, one hand still pressed up against her bleeding side, and she crawled toward him.

"Sam...?" she ventured, bloody and hesitant hands hovering, uncertain of whether she ought to touch him at all even though she wanted to. Moving with effort to sit beside him, knees bent beneath herself and behind resting on her heels, back aching and head throbbing, Shannon reached forward, giving the display case a mighty push, sending it toppling off him and to the side, crashing to the floor. Glass littered his clothes and hair. "Don't leave me. Don't do this to me. I can't do it again," she snapped at him between hiccups and ragged, shallow breaths.

One hand reached forward and two fingers pressed against Sam's neck, feeling for a pulse. It was still there, she was relieved to find, as she pulled her hand away and closed her eyes, setting her jaw against the nausea settling in her stomach at the sight of her blood on Sam's neck and his own in his hair. "Sam, wake up," she breathed, taking another breath in through her nose and trying to ignore the loud rumbling in her chest and wheezing in her throat as she did so.

He first thing Sam was aware of was the sound of faint murmuring. His eyebrows moved slowly as he tried to place the voice. His thoughts were moving slowly, lazily, not really connecting. He felt uncomfortable, pain on the edge of his consciousness and he realized that he must have been knocked out. He focused on the voice, thinking it didn't sound like Dean at all and then the name clicked into place. Shannon.

He forced his eyes open, groaning lightly as the pain rushed towards him full force. His head was throbbing, a hundred times worse than the hangover he'd contended a day earlier, his shoulder felt like it'd been repeatedly hit by a baseball bat and he was aware of burning cuts all over his back and arms. He sniffed inhaling a mixture of plaster dust and the scent of blood and then lifted his eyes to stare with dazed eyes at the destruction around him. His eyes moved over Shannon and the last couple of minutes came flooding back to him. His eyes widened. "Shannon, are you okay?"

He grunted as he pushed himself up to a sitting position, propping his weight on his left arm and cradling his right, his head swimming as he fought down nausea. His eyes swept over her, looking for injuries and stopped at the sight of the blood. He reached out, his shoulder screaming in protest as he put his hand over hers. "Let me see," he said, flicking his eyes back to hers, worry clearly written across his face.

She was wheezing and pale and he suddenly worried that she was going into shock. "Shannon, you've got to relax," he said, his voice urgent. "You're going to be okay."

When Sam opened his eyes, Shannon released the breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding, snapping her jaw shut to force herself to breathe in through her nose again. Jack back on the Island had said that was all she had to do to calm down, because the panic always made the attacks seem worse than they were. Her eyes scanned over Sam to see if he'd sustained any other injuries; there were a few shards of glass poking upward and out from his back and with the lack of blood there, Shannon could only assume they weren't deep. Carefully, Shannon leaned over him and plucked the few pieces of glass out of his back and tossed them over him and onto the floor. When she sat back, she winced at the way the movement pulled on her wound and pushed her hand against it again, harder this time. "I've...been better," she managed breathlessly when Sam asked if she was okay. She was just glad that he was.

It didn't escape her notice the way that he was babying his right arm as he pushed himself up to sit. When he was looking her over, she was back to looking him over. Other than the blood in his hair and the glass she'd pulled from his back, he looked all right, but there was no real telling what was wrong with his arm, so she wasn't so sure. Shannon winced and let out a soft cry of pain when Sam put his hand over hers, adding more pressure to the wound on her side. She looked back at him again, his worry mirrored in her own expression. He was telling her to relax and that she was going to be okay and all that she could think - and bitterly, at that - was that she'd made it through an earthquake in mostly one piece...and she was still fighting death because she couldn't breathe. Disgusting sort of irony there, she thought, perhaps.

"I need..." she started and then cut herself off, shaking her head. "I...can't breathe," she said with a labored voice and a chest heaving as she tried to gasp for air that didn't seem to want to be taken in. The dust in the air caused her to cough and the pull on her wound ached dully under their hands. She was so tired... It would be stupid to stay there just because Sam was touching her and she didn't want him to know that she was an asthmatic, but it still took her a moment to force herself to pull away from him, eyes moving back to the backpack a few feet away. "Hang...on," she managed as she pushed against the wound with the same hand, crawling carefully across the floor, trying to avoid the upraised and snapped floorboards.

Hesitating to let go of her side, Shannon finally did so and gave the shoulder strap a yank, pulling the backpack free from its place under the rubble. The first inhaler she found was crushed to pieces and her throat closed with panic as she tossed it uselessly aside. The second one was still in tact and Shannon shook it hard as she let her breath out in a huff. The cap clattered to the floor when she popped the top off and shoved it into her mouth, puffing on it and holding her breath as if her life depended on it. Because, well, it sort of did.

After repeating the process, she let the inhaler fall out of her hand and back into the bag before looking over her shoulder to check on Sam. Wound in her side be damned, Sam looked worse off than she felt, so she pushed on her side again and crawled back to him. "Your head..." she said softly, frowning slightly and furrowing her brow with worry. Wiping her free hand on her good side, Shannon reached up and pushed Sam's hair back from his face, craning her neck slightly to look for the wound from whence the blood had come. "You're bleeding," she added almost unnecessarily.

Sam's look of concern deepened when Shannon cried out at the light pressure he'd put over her hand. His first thought was to pull his hand away immediately at unintentionally hurting her, but he had a sudden thought that if it was bad it was important to apply pressure and stop the bleeding as soon as possible. He lessened the pressure he was applying, but didn't move his hand away from hers.

His eyebrows moved together as she said she couldn't breathe. It took his brain a long moment to come up with the term hyperventilating as he tried to make his mind move through the headache that had his forehead wrinkled in an effort to think things through. She coughed and then a moment later she pulled away from him. His hand felt like it was made of lead and as much as he wanted to reach out to stop her, he couldn't seem to make himself move fast enough. "Shannon?" He called out, momentarily forgetting what they were doing sitting in the rubble of what used to be their room, as she crawled away.

He tried to focus on her as she moved, watching her pull the bag free and toss something to the side. He tried to zero in on her movements, give them names and slowly his mind seemed to start putting things together faster. He shifted, the world seeming to tilt for a second before righting itself and he again focused on Shannon as she made her way back to him. He felt like he should be doing more than just sitting there, felt like he was forgetting something but as Shannon reached up and brushed his hair back he couldn't think about anything but her sitting there in front of him.

He swallowed, meeting her eyes and holding them. "You're bleeding too," he pointed out, his forehead smoothing out for a moment as he remembered. He looked down to the hand at her side. "How bad is it?"

He reached out again, his shoulder protesting as he brushed his fingers against hers. "Let me see how bad it is," he said, looking back up at her.

Still not entirely able to find the source of the blood in Sam's hair, she wondered if maybe it wasn't from his head at all and looked back at his face, her breath catching when he met her eyes and pointed out that she, too, was bleeding. "I don't know..." she admitted, furrowing her brow slightly. "It didn't feel deep when I pulled the thing out," she said. But, Shannon wasn't a doctor; she wouldn't know what to tell him.

She wished Jack was here. Jack, the spinal surgeon. Jack, the leader. Jack, the savior...who saved her life but couldn't save Boone. Jack, who tried his damnest and gave more than anyone could've or would've ever asked of him, trying to keep Boone alive. Jack would know. But Jack wasn't here...and Sam would have to do. She hoped maybe he could provide more insight than she herself could.

When he told her to let him see, she nodded and let out a shaky breath, not entirely sure she wanted to see how bad it was. Shannon pulled her hand away again and turned her head, closing her eyes. Blood had always made her squeamish. It was her own, so rightfully, it shouldn't have...but the blood reminded her of the foreign object that had been embedded in the skin there moments ago - moments that felt like hours - and she couldn't look. She couldn't make herself move to help him. "Just..." she breathed, "be careful; it hurts."

She paused, then, without looking back, not wanting to see the actuality of the reason for the pain in her side - it looked bad enough with her tank top hiding it - and took another deep breath. "What happened to your arm? Did you break it...?" she all but whispered, tears stinging in her eyes and rolling down her cheeks again as her breath caught with the pain that resulted in the movement of her shirt away from the wound. It seemed, she assumed, that some of the blood had started to congeal around it.

Shannon turned her head and closed her eyes as Sam moved forward his face inches from her shoulder as shifted his weight to get a better look. He felt dizzy, but there was no tilting this time and he reached down, wrapping his fingers around the edge of her shirt.

"I will," he promised when she said it hurt, his eyes momentarily moving to her profile and taking in the crease of her forehead as she closed her eyes. He pulled the fabric up as carefully as he could, feeling her breath catch as he freed it from the already clotting wound.

"No, I don't think it's broken," he said, giving his arm a momentary thought as he answered her question. Trying to distract her. "It's my shoulder, mostly. It'd hurt a lot worse if it was dislocated, so I don't have to worry about that either."

He frowned as he looked at her wound, seeing several splinters and thinking she was going to need a couple of stitches to close it up completely. He sighed, looking over at her again. "Shannon, I'm going to have to pull these splinters out." He swallowed, an apologetic frown in place. "It's going to hurt."

He shifted, reaching out and placing her bloodied hand over her tank top to hold it up, then reached out and took her other hand with his. "The sooner we get it over with, the better. Okay?" He frowned and lowered his attention to her side, trying to twist so that he could see it better. He gave her hand a quick squeeze and then took a deep breath before reaching down with his other hand and pulling the largest splinter out at a 90 degree angle.

Shannon's eyes opened and her jaw went slightly slack as she fought a lump in her throat at the pain. She was distracted when Sam answered her question, but she caught the second end of it and nodded curtly, trying hard not to cry. "That's good, at least," she said weakly.

When she heard Sam sigh, she tensed. It must be bad... And then, he mentioned splinters and having to pull them out, warning her that it would hurt. Shannon took a deep, wavering breath and nodded again. "Okay, just go," she insisted, taking her shirt in her hand when he moved it there. She felt marginally comforted by his having taken her other hand in his own.

He gave her hand a quick squeeze and she tensed again, knowing even before he touched her again that it was his way of telling her he was going to get to work. Her jaw set and her face scrunched in pain as hissed in pain, fighting still the lump in her throat dying to be let out in the form of a sob. Tears were falling freely now and with both of her hands occupied, she couldn't even wipe them away so that Sam wouldn't see.

Instead, when he pulled the first splinter out, having caused the change in her features to begin with, Shannon squeezed Sam's other hand hard out of reflex. When that one was out, her grip loosened on him and she sniffled, taking another shaky breath. "Fuck..." she breathed. "How many more...?" she asked, not entirely sure she wanted to know the answer.

Sam felt Shannon tense under his hand and heard her hiss with pain as he tried to prepare himself for extracting the splinter. A teardrop fell apart on his hand over hers and the sight of her crying steeled him up for what he had to do. He knew removing the splinters wouldn't take away the pain completely, but it may relieve some of it.

He felt her hand squeeze his and then loosen as he dropped the bloodied splinter to the ground, focusing in on the next one and trying to see how he could pull it out without causing further damage.

"Not many," he said, his voice low with concentration. He glanced up at her, taking in her tear streaked face and he let out a low breath. "It could've been worse," he said slowly. "For a moment I thought..." He trailed off, his gaze loosing focus for a moment as he saw the beam strike her in his mind's eye. He looked over at her and swallowed, his mouth suddenly dry. "I'm glad it's not worse," he said his stomach tightening, as he met her eye and held it for a long moment.

He seemed to come back to himself a moment later, sucking in a breath and furrowing his brow as he leaned forward to pull out the next splinter. "Does it hurt anywhere else?" He asked, carefully taking hold of it and pulling it out, before dropping it next to the first one. "Back, neck, shoulder, head?"

The fact that Sam said "not many" splinters were left as opposed to giving her an exact number gave Shannon no comfort at all. In fact, it made her stomach drop. She looked back at him when his voice trailed off and the look in his eye, so far away and distracted made her stomach flutter slightly. Yeah, she'd "thought..." as well. Her stomach tightened nervously, then, when he looked her in the eye. Shannon's lips parted to speak, but she closed her mouth again when he seemed to snap out of it and look back down at her side.

Her eyes moved toward the missing ceiling when he moved to pull out the next splinter and she squeezed his other hand in her own again, biting down on her bottom lip nearly hard enough to split the skin as he pulled out another splinter. When he spoke again, Shannon loosened her grip on his hand once more and looked back at him. "Everywhere," she admitted. "I feel like I was hit by a bus," she added with a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

Looking back at him, then, her eyes meeting his, Shannon wet her lips. "For a second I thought you..." her voice trailed off. "I mean, when I could finally move to look for you..." Again her voice trailed off and she swallowed thickly. Fuck it. You're happy to know he's alive and if that's all it has to be, then so be it, she thought fleetingly and let go of his hand to brush his matted hair away from his face again. Then, without allowing herself to think about it, she leaned forward and pressed her lips against his for a quick second before pulling away and looking down, cheeks red and face burning. "Sorry," she said softly, looking back up at him and meeting his eyes again.

Sam wanted to return her smile when she said it felt like she'd been hit by a bus, but he couldn't quite manage it. He wasn't sure if she might have some internal injuries that he wouldn't be able to see. The thought made his stomach twist in worry.

He stilled as she met his eyes, seeing something there that surprised him. He felt her grip loosen on his hand as she moved her fingers back up to his face again. "Shannon," he said, his voice soft and low as he was unable to look away from her. She leaned in and pressed her lips up against him and he closed his eyes for a moment until she pulled away.

She apologized, her face red with embarrassment and for a moment he couldn't speak. And then he decided he didn't need to as he cupped her face with his left hand and leaned in to kiss her.

He'd be lying if he said he'd never thought about what it was going to be like. He'd definitely never thought it would happen in these circumstances and he wasn't about to let himself start thinking about what it meant that it was happening now of all times. All that mattered was that it was happening. He'd almost lost the chance entirely and that was enough of a wake up call to make him respond, whether she meant it the same way he did or not.

He pulled away, his hand sliding to her shoulder. He let out a small huff of air, his brow smoothing out into something like relief as a smile curved up the corners of his lips briefly. "Guess we're even."

To say that she was taken by surprise when Sam kissed her, without a word, after her apology would've been an understatement. She closed her eyes and let herself melt into it. A part of her wondered what Sam's kisses would feel like, and she'd never admit that secretly in her mind, she'd ventured guesses. He didn't let her down. His hand was holding her face and his lips were soft; the kiss was gentle. It wasn't hungry or needy or rough. Not like Dean. Ew, don't even go there, she thought to herself and pushed that away as quickly as it had cropped up, but not before another took its place: different and better.

When he pulled away, Shannon pursed her lips and her eyes remained closed for a moment, as if she was trying to commit it to memory in case it never happened again. In case he had only done it because he was glad that she was alive. When he spoke, Shannon's eyes fluttered open and she looked back at him with a small smile, echoing the huff as she chewed her bottom lip. "Yeah," she answered quietly. Then, because something about the smile on his face lent her the idea that she could, she added coyly, "took you long enough."

She wanted to kiss him again, but the pain was flooding back to her in the absense of a distraction. Her brow furrowed against it. With a bit of a wince, Shannon shifted and finally let her hand fall away from his hair. "How many more...?" she ventured, making a conscious effort not to look to see for herself how many splinters were left that needed extracting.

Her eyes remained closed and for a second doubt seemed to threaten the sense of relief that was flooding through Sam. Then she opened her eyes and smiled and he let out a breath slowly as he watched her work her lower lip.

He let out a small laugh when she said it'd taken him long enough, surprised at the idea that she'd been waiting for this. He'd been so convinced that his feelings were one sided that the thought that Shannon might be waiting for him to make a move had never really occurred to him. He cleared his throat and pressed his lips together, glancing downwards as he felt his face warm. "Yeah, well..."

He looked up in time to catch her wince and his face melted into an expression of sympathy. "Just a few more," Sam said, keeping his voice low as he squeezed her hand and got into position to pull out the next one. He took a deep breath and pulled out the next one, dropping it to the floor.

"Almost done."

The regressed part of Shannon wanted to be coy and ask, "yeah, well...what?" but now was neither the time nor the place. The action seemed to speak enough for itself to satisfy her for the time being. If it turned out that he'd only kissed her because he didn't want her to feel stupid, then she'd cross that bridge when she got to it. For now, there were more important tasks at hand.

Nodding succinctly, Shannon squeezed Sam's hand back as he pulled out another splinter, closing her eyes and setting her jaw against the pain. Almost done, he said, so she could tough it out a little longer.

When he'd finished, she relaxed and leaned against him, her arms loosely circling his waist as her face nuzzled the crook of his neck. "We should get out of here," she said softly, lips brushing against his skin as she spoke. "I'd be really surprised if there weren't aftershocks and this place is a death trap, now," she added, pulling away to look up at him.

"Are you okay? I mean, can you stand? Are you dizzy?" Her eyes were back on the blood in his hair and her stomach twisted with worry because she still hadn't been able to find the source of it and she wasn't sure she had the fortitude to look again.

When he was finished, Shannon leaned into him, hugging him lightly. He hugged her back with his good arm, rubbing her back lightly. He closed his eyes for a moment as her lips moved against his skin and then his brain processed her words. She was right. An earthquake of that magnitude was bound to have aftershocks. He pulled back to look down at her. "Right," he said with a nod.

"I'm fine," Sam said, watching her look at him with worry. He had felt fuzzy and disconnected before, but it had gotten easier to focus as they'd talked and he'd extracted the splinters. The kiss hadn't hurt at clearing his head either. He shifted, pushing himself to his feet. A momentary wave of dizziness hit, but then quickly receded and he gave her a faint smile. "See."

He held his hands out to her. "Come on, let's get out of here."

Sam's hug, however weak and one-armed still made Shannon feel marginally better and absolutely comforted. Especially when he rubbed her back gently the way he was doing. She was disappointed but unsurprised when he pulled back from it after she'd spoken and then he agreed they should get out.

When Sam told her that he was fine, her brow furrowed for the briefest of seconds in disbelief, but he got to his feet and he gave her a small smile. Yeah, I see, but I'm still not sure I believe you, she thought, but didn't say as she took his hand and, with his help - and a lot of pain-induced wincing and whimpering - she got to her feet as well. If he wasn't still dizzy, then she could rest against him for a second until her body stopped screaming and aching for having been forced to move against its will. So, she did just that, leaning her weight against him again and closing her eyes as she pressed her face against his shirt, breathing jaggedly as she tried to relax again and ease the pain of movement.

Taking a deep breath and huffing it out again against Sam's chest, Shannon finally pulled away and took a step back. "You're gonna have to help me," she admitted, adding as a reminder for her legitimate reason why, "everything hurts."

Shannon leaned into him and Sam instinctively slid his good arm around her waist to steady her. He could tell she was in pain and he waited for a moment to let her get her bearings. He looked down at her as she buried her face in his shirt. For a moment he was afriad she might start crying and he tried to think of what he might be able to say to take some weight off of the situation, but there was nothing he could say to make this any less terrible than it was.

His arm loosened around her as she pulled away, having seemingly collected herself. He couldn't help but think about how she was constantly surprising him with her ability to take things somewhat in stride and still be vulnerable enough where he was almost afraid to take his eyes off her. At the reminder that everything hurt his face shifted into an expression of concern.

"Okay," he said, stepping forward and putting his hand arm around her waist again, careful not to touch her wound. "That's okay. Come on," He said as they started picking their way in the rubble towards the doorway.

Closing her eyes and resting her head against his good shoulder, Shannon walked beside Sam, trying not to start to cry again. Every step was torture, pulling at her side and forcing sore muscles to work to move her forward with him. She appreciated that he was all right with helping her and trusted that he could lead them as she squeezed her eyes shut against the pain.

"You're the best, you know that? Did I ever tell you that?" she asked quietly, her own arm tightening around his waist as she navigated her way through the rubble, finally opening her eyes when she considered the distinct possibility of tripping over things. Shannon knew the museum like the back of her hand...but not like this. Not in shambles.

It occurred to her briefly to look around for the others - for Jack, Ianto, Jenny, Ripley, Sarah Jane, and the Doctor - but almost ashamedly, Shannon was too selfish to suggest it. She was in pain and she was scared. If an aftershock followed, being in the building could prove even more dangerous now than it had been before, because now both she and Sam were impaired. They wouldn't be able to react as quickly and they were already both in too much pain to protect their own bodies as well as they'd tried the first time. No, Jack couldn't die and he was a hero; he wouldn't let anyone else die, either. She knew it in her heart of hearts and so, rather than suggest turning back, she clung to Sam and continued to make her way toward the front door of the building. Shannon wanted, at that moment, nothing more than to be out.

Sam wanted to smile when she said he was the best, but he was concentrating too hard on safely maneuvering her and him around the rubble towards the front of the museum. He thought he could hear the others talking, but at the moment all he could concentrate on was getting Shannon out of the museum. He wasn't sure how bad her injuries were and considering the way she was leaning against him he was afraid there might be something seriously wrong. He needed to get her out of the museum and into the daylight so he could make sure.

As they approached what was left of the front doors he found his thoughts moving towards Dean, Andy and Luna. He had no idea where Dean could be. Was he in the woods on his way to or from the house? Was the house a two story? He couldn't remember if he'd mentioned. Was he in town somewhere? Was he safe? Trapped? Hurt? His thoughts started turning over in his mind, one following after the other. Andy would've been at the church and with his leg in the shape it was, chances are he wouldn't have been able to get very far. He could be hurt. And he hadn't really been aware of Luna's whereabouts for the last two days. Was she with Tonks or Logan at the library?

His grip on Shannon tightened as he reached the door. "Almost out," he said, looking down at Shannon. She was covered in plaster dust and looking pale. "We can rest again when we're out."

Once they'd cleared the doorway of Sam's room, Shannon started to wonder about her other friends. She was safe, mostly, in Sam's arms, but what about Domeki? Was he alone or with Watanuki, and was he hurt like she was? Worse? Or was he luckier? Jay and his friend Bob, too, she wondered about...they stayed at the gas station and Shannon closed her eyes again as her stomach turned with worry. That place would be a complete death trap between the gas pumps outside and with the gigantic ferris wheel just across the dirt road...if that thing fell just right...

"I think I'm gonna be sick..." she whispered, moving a hand to cover her mouth as her brow knit at the thought of some unfortunate - or worse, Jay - being in the wrong place at the wrong time as a giant wheel in the sky toppled uselessly to the ground below, trapping or crushing anyone and everyone in its wake. Maybe it was strong enough to hold steady, but it had looked just as decrepit as everything else in this town; she doubted it would survive the quake.

Shannon felt Sam's grip tighten on her as they reached the door and she clung to him as though her life depended on it. Rather than look up at him when he spoke, she nodded gently against his shoulder. Resting was good. Sleep would be better. "Good," she finally said softly. "I'm so tired..."

A worried frown appeared on Sam's face when Shannon said she thought she was going to be sick. He was worried about internal bleeding. The rafter that had fallen on her hadn't done so lightly and Shannon's ballerina frame seemed fragile on the best of days. "Okay," he said simply, nodding towards the door. "Almost outside."

"You probably have a concussion," Sam said, helping her over the rubble at the door. "We can rest, but you can't go to sleep. If you feel sleepy, fight it. Just keep talking to me." They stumbled the last couple of steps to the dirt path and he glanced around before sighing heavily at the destruction around them.

Shannon had to close her eyes again briefly and swallow thickly against the nausea that came from a combination of pain, fear, and worry. When she opened them again, she let Sam help her over the rubble blocking their way outside and she dropped her shaking hand away from her mouth to hold his arm in order to steady herself.

"I'm exhausted," she replied, setting her jaw against a yawn. "You're probably not wrong about the concussion, though," she admitted. Sam said if she felt sleepy, she should fight it; just keep talking to him, he said. Shannon wished she could, but she knew he'd want to go looking for Dean.

Following his eyes with her own, Shannon, too scanned over the destruction and felt her chin begin to quiver as she held herself together as best she could to keep from crying. "You go," she whispered. "Dean's out there somewhere. He might need you," she added. "I'll sit out here, I promise I won't go to sleep," she finished. Mostly, she just wanted for Sam to know that she would be okay if he left her to find his brother and she wanted him to know that she wouldn't be upset with him for abandoning her under such a circumstance.
