Day 10: Forest - 1:15pm
Who: OTA
What: Seven point five
When: 1:15pm - 5:00pm
Where: Forest
Rating: TBA
Status: Active

The sun was shining high in the sky and a gentle breeze stroked the leaves of the trees, making them, along with the severed stub of rope on the clock face from the day previous sway lazily. It was quiet. Perhaps it was too quiet, for the lack of birds chirping or insects buzzing.

All in all, the day was one of the most pleasant as of yet for the bulk of the involuntary residents of Vas Captio, save, of course, the heat. Maybe it was a bit too hot to be entirely comfortable.

It started small, as most things do. Leaves rustled and bushes shivered, creating a pleasant woodsy sound of wind lacing its way through the greenery. Any birds or animal stopped, sitting silent in anticipation of what is about to come. They sense it.

The ground grumbled and heaved violently then. Several large trees cracked and groaned, splitting in half and crashing to the forest floor. Other large trees simply uprooted along the path of the rumbling, falling into smaller trees and bushes. Parts of the forest floor ripped open with steaming pockets of hot air rising out of them to sear or burn anyone that happened to be nearby them. The birds shot up out of their trees, flying out across the town in huge droves. Deer and other animals ran in every direction, seeking shelter of clearings or open air.

All along the edges of the forest, the glass wall rippled. In town, if anyone happened to look up at the sky, they would see this affect as a shimmering, prismatic shiver. The sounds of destruction from all parts of Vas Captio would carry up and along the dome, sending voices and noise to other parts of the town and forests in massive cacophony and confusion. Someone in the gas station might sound as though they were at the barn and so on and so forth.

Through the entire quake, the glass wall will stand firm. It will not crack or crumble even in the minutest way. It is untouched when all goes quiet again.

Vas Captio was still, again, and silent once more.

The Doctor & Remy LeBeau

The Doctor and Remy had been walking in the forest when the first little tremor had begun and the Cajun had paused and looked down at his booted feet, halting their small bantering conversation. He slowly picked up one foot, then set it down again and lifted red eyes up to one of the trees off to his left. The two had been walking since a bit after eight this morning all the way around the glass wall, and they'd gotten half way around.. the pair were in the South West corner right now, nearest to that house (which neither had yet seen through the thick trees and undergrowth) and furthest from town. And when the leaves on the tree started to flutter to the ground, Gambit had slowly moved closer to it. He had never lived in a place with earthquakes before, he'd never experienced one for himself, and he didn't know what to think.

However, when the shaking got harder, the Cajun stepped even closer to the tree and pressed his hand against it, as if wondering if it was just that one, or if it was everything. Then the other trees began to follow suit, and the ground shook harder, and the red-head backed off, bringing himself closer to the Doctor. It had dawned on him, now. "Merde." But really, the pair of them couldn't have been in a safer place, up against the impossibly strong glass, with only trees around them? They'd gotten lucky.

The ground began to rumble, the trees began to shake more violently, and then there were the sounds of cracking as trees began to shake in their foundation and the smaller ones snapped at the bases and began to fall over, knocking into other trees, and pushing them over as well.. or simply becoming propped up. Luckily, the two were standing next to a very large foreign-looking tree, that was steady and sure, and the Cajun felt relatively safe here. The shaking of the ground would throw him down and onto his bottom in the leaves and grass beneath him, but once there, he was steadier.

And slowly, the earthquake would come to a stop and silence reigned again. The Cajun let out a low whistle and looked aside to the felled Doctor not far from him, then smiled. "We lucky men, Docteur." He was slowly climbing to his feet and dusting off his hands (the gloves had protected him from any injuries to his hands) and was offering one of those hands down to the blue-suited man. "'Dat coulda been a lot worse, non?" They'd both escaped uninjured. For the most part.

But seconds later there was a loud crack from above the two men and one of the large branches finally gave way above them, damaged terribly and weakened to the point of failure, and came crashing down through the smaller branches. Gambit only had time enough to look up before the five-inch thick tree limb (it was certainly longer than him.. maybe ten feet long.. definitely long enough to catch the Doctor with the thick portion, if not just the smaller branches at the end) came slamming into him. Thankfully, it missed his head, but it cracked into his left shoulder and took him down to the ground like an ant smashed under a boot. His knees hit the ground hard, the vines there slicing through fabric of his pants, thanks to the force, and exposing his knees to the rough ground. There'd be cuts there, bruising.. but none of it would compare to the damage his shoulder had taken when the limb had landed on it. There hadn't been any wet crunching sound, thankfully-- but the Cajun had yelled out when his arm had been torn from the socket and the limb rolled off of him and fell with a heavy thud to the ground, onto his ankle right beneath.

The string of French curses that left his mouth would have set a nun ablaze, but the red-head was in pain, understandably, and wasn't that interested in assuring the safety of nuns everywhere.

Something was not right. The Doctor had felt it early in the morning and he felt it even more so now. Despite the warm temperature and beaming sunshine, the Time Lord felt like something was just a hair off. Something was wrong.

He had heard the rumbling coming. The Doctor's face went dead pan as he watched the world start to shake. There was nothing he could do aside from give a sharp yell, "Gambit!" trying to urge the man away from the tree. It wouldn't be any good trying to lean on them, this was just the first blush.

The world slowed, and the Doctor found himself dumped on his rear. The ground was hard and dry, and made for a bit of a bruise; but, still, he was uninjured. He wanted to stay there because he could feel the oncoming storm as the earth seemed to quiet. The Doctor had become very, very still. He was waiting.

Gambit, however, had other plans as he pushed himself up from the forest floor and had come to offer the Doctor a hand in standing. The Doctor blinked, and before he could articulate that the worst had not come and gone another surge of raw force shook the ground and rocked the trees around them to their roots.

The Doctor was looking up, past Gambit's shoulder when he saw the tree branch coming. It was thick and heavy and old. There was nothing the Doctor could do for Gambit in that instance; the only thing he could do was roll out of the way, the end of the limb cracking him in the small of his back as opposed to his head. The Time Lord growled, willing the pain into submission because by the sound of it, Gambit had received the worst of it by comparison.

Balling his hands into fists he pushed himself up from the forest floor, closing the gap that remained between he and Gambit. He could see the shoulder marvelously out of place, and the limb sitting rather unfortunately across the man's ankle. It could have been worse, much worse.

"Respirez!" he yelled at the Cajun. "You listening to me?" He needed to get the Cajun's attention for what he needed to do next.

No warnings, no counting, no silly plans. The Doctor was beside the slightly larger man and he was shoving into his injured shoulder. Grabbing his bicep and pushing up, the Time Lord forced the limb back into place on the second try with a loud pop of ligaments and tendons.

Then the Doctor took his own moment to breathe.

When the Doctor yelled in return, it did catch the Cajun's attention and his cursing turned to heavy panting, wider red eyes (though, even with as wide as they were, there was no white showing, not like an animal with a dark eye but white around the sides and back.. but it was completely black, the entire eye, save for the iris) turning onto him and focusing there. He might have spoken up, might have said something, but the Doctor was grabbing onto his bicep then and shoving inwards and upwards and another loud string of French curses followed. The very last one was a rather rude explicative in Mayan, oddly as that sounded, and he was lifting his right hand to touch at his injured left shoulder and hold on tightly, keeping it pressed into the socket where it belonged.

Only then, did he speak. It was calm but tinged with pain, and held a bit of a whine to it because of that. It was, though, spoken in a normal tone and not shouted. "Ow."

Yes. Ow. And the Cajun, then, moved his right hand out to shove the Doctor's closest shoulder. Not hard enough to topple him, not even really hard enough to make him move much, but it was enough to say he had not been okay with that sudden, painful fix, no matter how much he appreciated it now. And following that, he was dropping his good hand to grip under the log and jerk it up off his ankle, dropping it aside with a small grunt.

"You okay?" Red eyes found the Doctor again, not bothering to look over his body.. he was sure he wouldn't see any injuries anyway, beneath the fabric of his suit. And it certainly didn't seem like he'd broken anything, with as quickly as he'd come to the Cajun's aid.

Idly, the red-head was rubbing at his sore ankle with his good hand. Luckily, it'd been protected inside his thick boot and it was only sore. He'd want to wear around a sling for a few days.. but aside from that, the Cajun, like the Doctor, wasn't much worse for wear.

The "ow" from the Cajun was taken as a sign that he was in fact alright. Though, even in the midst of a seizing back the Doctor was quite amused that his would be friend was cursing in Mayan, not a language you heard every day. He'd need to remember to ask if the first thing Remy learned was the curse words of a given dialect.

The Doctor now had a moment to evaluate himself. His brain ticked things off. There was no bleeding, no breaking and no tearing. What happened to be a problem was the seizing of the muscles in his back which caused the Doctor to double over, landing his elbows on his thighs. This was an unfortunate moment. It wasn't often the Doctor experienced physical pain and each time he did he vowed it would be his last. Currently this level of pain was rivaling the time he'd lost his hand.

"Brilliant," the Doctor responded through clenched teeth, his jaw locking. Apparently, his back didn't much appreciate the tree limb using it as it's point of impact. Fair enough.

"We need to get to the town.. everyone else..." he hissed, forcing himself upright with a determined growl. Like hell this Time Lord was going to hang out in the woods while people were no doubt suffering. "Come on," same growl as he stomped through the underbrush. He'd have time to lick his wounds later.

It took Gambit a second longer to stand. He'd had to shift to his left side, while holding his left shoulder, push up onto his right foot, then carefully stand so as not to jar himself. And as he followed the Doctor, he'd be limping only slightly, but didn't dare try to jump over any of the felled trees. Not with his shoulder hurting the way it was. Give him a bit and the pain would dull some, then he'd be back to leaping over things like a gazelle on crack. But not right now.

"You t'ink it wen' into 'de town, too?" As mentioned before, he knew very little about earthquakes and wasn't sure how wide-spread they could be. He'd never experienced one before this. It was all knew to him.. but he learned at a startling rate. That much was demonstrated by the fact that he didn't attempt to get the Doctor to sit down and rest. In the short time he'd known him, he'd already figured out that he could have lost a limb and would still be traipsing off to help people. Gambit was the same way.. or had been once. He wasn't anymore. He didn't have anyone to protect, anymore. Just number one.

Well, and he'd definitely stand at the Doctor's back, from now on.

The Doctor wasn't moving at a very quick pace to start with. His movements were disjointed but filled with fury. There was a rage that fueled the Gallifreyan now. A blind, focused rage.

"It started in the town," he responded in a voice that came from between clenched teeth. The Doctor had one singular focus right now: keeping the people in the town alive. There would be no deaths, not on his watch. The problem was where to start. There was no way to be systemic about this. There were nearly 50 people in this place now. What was he to do? He was going to keep going in a beeline with the wall at his back and he was going to help his friends.

Saving the universe, saving his friends, same difference.

The Doctor twisted to peek over his shoulder, shooting pains running up his side. "You alright?" he asked, side stepping a fallen tree with a less than graceful motion. He could see a clearing still a ways out. The clearning was most likely the road. From there he would be on to the next buidling he found.

One already had. The man hanging from the Clock Tower.. but Gambit, thankfully, didn't know that yet and he was following behind the confident alien without hesitation, though he did have to step around that tree instead of over it. But when a big one came, he tucked his injured arm in close, stepped a few quick times and planted his right hand on it to vault himself flawlessly and fluidly over, landing on his right leg more than his left almost soundlessly, before beginning his easy limp again. Oh, that hurt. But they were clearly in a rush, so it wasn't something he'd waste time to think about.

"Oui, oui, fine. Don' stop for me, I feel grea'." Well, compared to how he'd felt five minutes ago, he felt just fantastic, and wasn't going to complain for fear of things getting worse. But the woods were wide and long and the clearing came closer at a slow pace. "You sure you okay, Docteur?" With his jaw set like that, the alien looked to be in pain more than he looked angry.. then again, it might just be that Gambit was misreading him. It was a likely thing, actually.

But if Gambit had friends in that town, he'd be rushing like this too.

The Doctor was on fire. His hearts were pumping and his endocrine system was pumping massive amounts of adreneline through his body in an attempt to dull the pain as he steadfastly forced himself onward. His back, he had determined, had been severely bruised. Though, that was not going to stop him. He had things to do, people to save, equations to write, and someone called the Insider to show what the fury of a Time Lord really looked like.

The Doctor hadn't looked back, the fact that Remy was talking and was keeping up was proof enough for the Doctor that the Cajun was alright. The fact he kept talked was an even greater sign that the the redhead was perfectly fine despite his collision with the branch.

"The race that fought my people, Gambit. They have a name for me. A name, I suspect the people behind the curtain did not take seriously enough." Fire and ice and rage. Brilliance faded only by stubborness and ego - that was the Doctor. This Doctor, long lost in the back of his head and tempered by his companions was a man on a mission. He would not, could not be stopped.

Trainers landed on pavement with a heavy heave as the Doctor looked left and right and squinting he worked to locate a landmark. There was work to be done.

"'De an'icipa'ion is killin' me, Docteur. What 'dey call you?" He had to know. No one called him anything neat-- wait. No. That wasn't true.. Le Diable Blanc was pretty neat. He had to admit. A short pained noise escaped the Cajun as he stepped on that ankle wrong, but a small hop took the pressure off of it and he was walking with just that small limp again, coming up along the Doctor's side once more, to keep stride with him, still hanging onto his injured arm. Merde, it hurt.

This road was one he'd never been down.. but they were taking a curve that would take them around the outside of the town instead of straight up the middle unfortunately. It meant it would take them much longer to get to someone. And it meant the Cajun wouldn't see that doorway out of here.

The Doctor took a breath. He didn't even know why he brought it up. He had a singular focus: getting to the road. It wasn't time for sharing is caring or opening up. He had a job to do.

The road was twisting and the trees were in the way of his seeing any structures. He couldn't get his bearings right and the Doctor found himself wishing that he had managed to do just a little bit more exploration instead of locking himself away with the damned modulator. He was also wishing he hadn't tweaked his back because now he was starting to limp a little. Still, determination would win and the Doctor would keep on at a steady pace.

An explosion rocked in the distance and the Doctor paused. "The petrol station," he looked, catching sight of a plume of black smoke rising above the trees.

Path committed to he continued on. They'd find a closer building soon enough, he was sure of it.

"You still alright?" He asked over his shoulder.

"You don' wan' talk 'bout it? D'accord. We talk later." Quipped back to him in that still up-beat manner. It was hard to get the Cajun to be completely serious, but sometimes it could be managed. Not right now, however. Thinking on the bright side kept him going, right now and during life in general.

And when the explosion rocked the ground again, the red-head, who'd just been balancing on a fallen tree to climb over it, was knocked aside and nearly fell, but pushed himself up onto his toes and jumped off, landing a little unsteady on his injured ankle, but gracefully enough. A few mutters beneath his breath and he was rising up to keep walking again. "Oui, oui. How 'bout you, Docteur?" However, after the Doctor answered, Gambit would allow the rest of their trek to go in silence. The Doctor was clearly on a mission and Gambit didn't want to detract him from that too badly.

Well, at least Gambit knew better than to press because the Doctor would have had none of that. It was when he was Nine that he'd learned the value of just closing his mouth. Sometimes he wondered if his rambling nature wasn't a direct result of forgetting that lesson.

"Brilliant," he responded rather gruffly. Just ahead the figure of a collection of buildings could be made out; the theater the most obviously damaged of them all. It appears they had found their target.

"Allons-y."
