Day Two - Experiment
Who: Sam Winchester and Luna Lovegood
What: Experiment
When: 7:00 am
Where: In the woods
Rating: PG-13 for language
Status: Complete

Sam awoke to the sound of thunder, suddenly aware of the sound of rain falling and the feel of it sliding down the back of his shirt.  His neck felt cramped as if he'd been sitting this way with his head bent forward for a long period of time.  He tried to move his hands so he could wipe away the wetness on his face, but found that they were firmly bound behind him.

Sam looked down, seeing the ropes tied around his hips and lower abdomen, then behind him to see what exactly he was tied to.  It wouldn't be the first time he'd woken tied up to a chair or a tree, except this time he found it was a person.  He caught light blonde hair out of the corner of his eye, though he couldn't make out any details except it looked long.  That wasn't helpful considering there were three women with blonde here that he knew off.  Unless he was back in Cold Oak and this was, Lily?  He shook his head, not sure what was real and what wasn't.  He glanced around the immediate area, trying to see through the heavy falling rain and fog as he tried to remember how he'd ended up here.

He took a deep breath, trying to work his hands free as he jiggled the person tied to him.  "Hey," he said, over the sound of the rain.  "Are you okay?"

"Huh." It was all Sam could manage without sounding impolite. He really liked Luna, but sometimes he wasn't exactly sure of what she was talking about. He'd never heard of firewhiskey or a school requiring courses on werewolves. He was sure he'd missed something somewhere, but didn't want to point it out to her. Especially not now.

Luna giggled and a moment later he could feel her working the knots at his back. He gave a small laugh at her comment on the helpfulness of giants, again not quite understanding what she was talking about. "Well, I'm not that big on Christmas," Sam admitted. "So maybe I'm not exactly the jolly kind of giant." He listened with growing apprehension as the wolf howls got closer.

He thought Luna had stopped her humming as she worked on his ropes and he was surprised to find he missed it. He felt the knot fall away and he pulled his wrists forward, rubbing them.

"What was that thing you were humming?" Sam asked, pulling at the rope around his middle. He wasn't sure if he was asking just because the pause in cheerful conversation seemed strained or because he had a growing feeling that they were meant to be some kind of bait. He pushed up on the rope, glancing upwards as he moved to pull it off. His eye caught the glint of something buried in a nearby tree.

"Hey," he said, nodding up at the tree. He pushed himself up, pulling off the other rope. He glanced at Luna and noted the shape of her wrists. He frowned. "Thanks, Luna," he said, reaching out to pat her on the shoulder lightly before moving towards the tree. He froze a second later at the sound of rustling in the undergrowth nearby.

He swallowed, looking back at her, a hand held low in a signal that meant to stay still.

"Besides," Luna spoke as she fumbled over a particularly tight knot, "One of my professors and a brother of a friend were and are werewolves." Thinking of Professor Lupin was always a sad subject, that he had fallen in the final battle, killed by Dolohov. He had been such a good Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, except for three days a month. And William Weasley was a brilliant curse breaker, and had been for years.

"Christmas is lovely," she told him quietly, just loud enough to be heard over the rain, but not loud enough to draw more attention than was necessary. Just in case. "With indoors outside and outdoors inside. Warm fires, eggnog, presents." It was her favorite holiday, at least after Beltaine. Snow and fire came second to flowers and springtime, at least for her.

Kneeling in the mud, in her pajama pants and Marvel tee shirt, she waited for Sam to unravel himself from what was left of the ropes once she got the last knot necessary undone. Once he was free, she stood. Although, even with her standing and him sitting, she could not claim a good deal of height on Sam Winchester. "Weasley Is Our King," she answered, while she looked around their surroundings as best she could through the haze and the downpour. "Students used to sing it after matches when the Gryffindors played."

"I do hope they are not looking for a virgin sacrifice," she wondered aloud, as if she was trying to decide whether blackberries or blueberries were her favorite. "Would you be safe?" It would be pointless to wonder if she was, because she already knew the answer to that. Still, it would be better for him to be aware that it would not be a problem in her case, just so all information was shared. "They are usually only attempted on one of the four major solstices, equinoxes, but perhaps their information is incorrect?" Turning in place, she paused for only a second to look back at Sam, "Oh and it would not be a problem for me."

He nodded to a tree across from him, and when she peered in that direction, she caught sight of something shining for the space of a Nargle's sneezebeat. When he thanked her, she bobbed her head and beamed brightly for a second. "You're welcome Sam."

The plants moved, and the much taller man was immediately given full authority and trust in Luna's mind, as she froze in place.

"I'm sorry," Sam said when Luna said she'd known two werewolves. He could only imagine that her situation had ended badly, thought maybe not in the exact same way that his had. He felt a sickening in his stomach and shut his eyes for a moment, trying to wipe away the memory that kept coming back to him.

He listened to Luna's soft but clear voice as she talked about Christmas wondering what it was like to have a Christmas like that. The closest he'd come had been the one he'd spent with Jess's family, but he'd been so busy trying to dodge questions about his own family that he hadn't been able to enjoy it.

"Weasley?" Sam asked, shooting Luna a confused look. He wasn't an expert on British history, but he'd thought he would've remembered a King Weasley. He gave a soft laugh as he started pulling the rope around his waist up, working it up his body.

He paused in his struggling with the rope to look over at Luna with a look of slack-jawed surprise, his eyebrows raised high. He shut his mouth quickly, ducking his head as he pulled the rope over his head. "Uh, yeah," he said, unable to bite back a small smile. "I'm safe." He looked a Luna for a moment longer, letting out a small chuckle as she admitted that she was safe as well. "That's good to know," he said, tossing the rope aside.

Sam had frozen in place at the rustling of the underbrush, his eyes sweeping it for any sign of danger. He spotted the greyness of the wolf's ears first and then the dark eyes that were watching him. He could feel his heart speed up as it stepped forward baring it's teeth and crouched low. He gave Luna a sideways glance, his hand still splayed out in a stay still sign, trying to communicate that she shouldn't make any sudden movements. He began moving towards the tree, trying to judge the distance and how close the wolf was. He stopped abruptly as another wolf appeared to his right.

He cursed under his breath.

Sam apologized for her having known to werewolves in her life, and she had to pause. "Why?" She was genuinely confused, why would knowing werewolves be necessarily bad? "Professor Lupin was a great man, despite the anti-werewolf prejudice," which she still did not understand. Unless you were discussing Fenrir Greyback. And then go and prejudge away. She turned soft eyes on the quarter giant, "Are you well?"

Okay, so that statement would probably be better used in a situation far from one where they were tied up and left in the woods of carnivores. But oh well.

"I do like Beltaine better," she admitted, mostly ignoring the fact that her long hair was a wet stream down her back. That they were cold, wet and covered in mud. "With flowers to put in my hair, bunnies, the magical ceremonies and dancing in springtime." As if she was somewhere entirely elsewhere, where everything she spoke of was currently around them, Luna smiled. "I love bunnies."

"Ronald," she nodded. "Quite funny, but sometimes mean to others. A year above me in school."

Completely unaware of the effect of her question, or why he would be so surprised and/or confused by it, Luna looked around them again. Aware that something or someone was watching them, "I thought not, you are quite pretty." It was stated as a plain fact, as it was in her world.

The not-lycanthrope wolves stalked partially into view, and Luna's eyes darted between them, losing some of their far-off aspect. Without warning, she reached out and grabbed Sam's outstretched arm, pulling down with all her strength in an attempt to knock him off balance. The inertia knocked her to the ground as well, just in time for the wolf that had circled around to her back to jump. Unable to turn mid leap, it landed then rebounded off her back. The witch cried out suddenly, as the animal's claws scratched into her skin.

"Anti-werewolf prejudice?" Sam repeated slowly, before shaking his head. He wasn't entirely sure what Luna meant by that. Though it was obvious that she'd cared about her friend. He opened his eyes and looked back at her when she asked if he was well. "Yeah," he said, though his voice was softer than before. "I'm fine." He cleared his throat and refocused his attention on the rope, nodding towards it. "You know, considering."

Half of the reason it was taking Sam so long to get free wasn't because his wet hands couldn't work the knots but because he kept looking up at Luna to see whether or not she was entirely serious and was amused to find that she was. He gave her a crooked smile when she said she liked bunnies, though he didn't offer his opinion on them. He'd wanted one once, when he was thirteen and in his magic tricks stage but he never would've admitted it to Dean or his dad. They would've eaten him alive, and then probably made a spit for the rabbit.

He paused in getting to his feet to shoot Luna a sideways glance as she noted that he was pretty. It was said in an off-handed and in a distracted way that left him unsure if she was serious or if it was some weird kind of joking. He could feel his face warm a little at being described with such a girly word. Glad, momentarily, that Dean hadn't been there to overhear that.

Sam had been moving slowly towards the tree and away from Luna when she'd reached out and grabbed his arm, pulling him down with her. He toppled easily, not expecting this from her, landing hard on his right elbow and being vaguely aware of one of the wolves sailing right through the place where he'd been standing a minute ago. He snapped his head in Luna's direction as she cried out. "Luna!" He called out, trying to assess how badly she was hurt.

He tried to scramble to his feet, knowing he'd have a better chance of fighting that way. He heard one of the wolves running at him and turned just in time to catch it in the face with one of his work boots. It rolled away, giving a high pitched noise and Sam was in the process of turning back to Luna when the other wolf sank it's fangs in his arm, knocking him over with the momentum of it's jump. Sam let out a small yell as he tried to get it off of him.

Luna nodded once and then again for good emphasis, before she canted her head just so the the side in semi-distraction. Part dreaminess, and part memory, really. "Not many like werewolves among them, not even when they are safe. Even with Wolfsbane potion." It still lingered, at the edges of society. The fact that Arthur Weasley was Minister of Magic kept anti-werewolf laws from passing, and that he was backed by multiple heroes and heroines from the Final Battle only strengthened his power base. Still, the balding man seemed to keep his head and serve his office as he should. With not a single Heliopath in sight.

It certainly was surprising that it was taking Sam so long to escape his own ropes. Didn't everyone have experience with being tied up and left places? Because, if they did, they would know that getting out of your bonds was one of the first thing that you needed to do. Anything else would only be hampered with something tying you down or at least tied around you.

In all honesty, while Sam was indeed very pretty, Luna had not exactly considered anyone she had met so far as anything other than they were. Later she could draw her own conclusions, connections and possible attractions, but for the moment she had to at least try to orient herself in this new environment first.

Knocking Sam over had been exactly Luna's goal, from the moment she had sensed the movement of the animal behind her. Throwing herself to the ground would still have ended up with the wolf flying straight at the man she had woken up tied to (which really should have been considered an odder situation to her than it was). This way it gave them both that much more of a chance. The witch did not have much experience with animals attacking, at least not out of a few out of control classes, and definitely not much with non-sentient animals.

The wolf's sharp claws had dug in just a bit as he had pushed off, but it had been mostly the force of it knocking her fully to the ground that had caused her to call out as she had. Lying face down on the ground, with some mud smeared on her cheek, Luna did her best to move quickly to pick herself up. There were still two wolves, and while she heard one whimper in pain from a blow, she could at least try to help. The blonde wished for her wand for an instant, as she grabbed two small handfuls of mud and scrambled towards where Sam was on his back.

Unconventional, yes, but when she slapped her hands over the animal's eyes with fistfuls of mud, Luna was remembering that temporarily taking away your opponent's sight was one of the main strategies of dueling.

"Wolfsbane potion?" Sam asked, wondering if they might actually be talking about some kind of dungeons and dragon thing. Maybe she didn't mean actual werewolves, just the fictional kind. That would actually explain a lot about why he didn't understand most of what she was talking about. Still, the earnestness in which she said everything made Sam doubt this was the entire truth.

Sam saw Luna approaching from behind and tried to call out to her to tell her to hit the wolf with a large stick or something, but before he could get anything out she'd covered the wolf's eyes with mud. The wolf turned blindly towards her, releasing Sam's arm and snapping in her direction, though Sam was relieved to see that Luna had gotten out of the way fast enough.

The wolf started shaking it's head in an effort to get the mud out of it's eyes, and Sam used the distraction to kick it hard with as much momentum as he could manage from his spot on the floor. He scrambled to his feet, knowing that the first wolf would be returning at any moment, he moved towards the tree, calling over his shoulder at Luna. "Find a weapon. A stick, anything. Hit them hard in the face." He grunted as he reached up for the knife, trying to work it out of the tree. "Ears, nose, eyes!" He called out into the bark of the tree as his arm worked to get it loose.

The potion was not something that Luna exactly understood the mechanics of, Potions had never been her best subject. Professor Snape had taken an immediate disliking to her after she noted aloud that first day of class that he seemed sad. Luna's mother had been the spell tester, who had enjoyed potions and charms, while those courses only served to remind her daughter that first lonely year of the mother she had lost just two years before.

"It makes werewolves harmless." Completely unaware of the heaviness of the topic for the man beside her, she paused, intent on the coldness of her toes. The Muggle socks were cute, but bunnies were far less warm when drenched and muddy. They could use warming charms.

Of course the wolf would turn and snap at her, which she had guessed, but not exactly thought to plan much for. Just scrambling away backward and barely yanking her fingers out of reach of toothy jaws. Sam kicked the wolf, making it yelp loudly in pain, rolling off to the side.

The other appeared again just as Luna was hurriedly standing, using a tree branch to give her a hand up. When it headed for her, she bent, grabbed a handful of green plant stems near her feet and yanked them up roots and all. The wolf growled, and moved towards her, only to instinctively snap at the small white bulbs the young woman threw at his head. For a second there was absolutely no reaction, and then it was almost cartoonish, the way the animal's eyes widened. It spat out what it had bitten into, coughing and scraping at its head with its paws.

As the animal whined, backing away and far more intent on getting what it had accidentally partially consumed off of its tongue, Luna nodded once. Served it right. "Wild onions," she told Sam, with a veneer of calm despite the situation. "Poisonous to canines."

"It what?" Sam said, positive now by the seriousness of Luna's expression that she wasn't talking about something pretend. "There's something that can stop it?" He suddenly felt sick to his stomach as she stared hard at Luna. "How?"

Sam's forearm where the wolf had bit him was burning as he tried to work the hunting knife out of the tree. He knew he was vulnerable with his back turned, and worse that Luna was vulnerable while he was occupied. Finally the knife gave way and came down in his hand. He spun around, just in time to see Luna tossing some white bulbs at the wolf and it snapping at them. He watched in fascination as the wolf then began to cough and roll it's snout in the dirt. He raised his eyebrows at Luna and couldn't help but give a small laugh when she said they were wild onions.

He moved forward, placing himself between the wolf and Luna, the knife raised to slash the animal just as the other emerged, it's teeth bared. He lunged towards the second wolf, while the first one was occupied, managing to stab it behind one of it's shoulders. It snapped viciously, only managing to rip away a patch of the bottom of Sam's shirt. Sam pulled out the knife and it backed away quickly, eying him and Luna warily.

The fact that Sam looked positively as if he was going to be sick right then and there, it made Luna realize that he had likely either known personally, or known of a werewolf in his life. "The potion does not stop the change, does not cure lycanthropy, simply stops the dementia that makes them unable to control themselves." Her gaze was sympathetic then, "It does not work on any who were not witches or wizards before." Here and there someone in the Wizarding community considered research into freeing Muggle werewolves from the curse, but for some reason Muggle Lycanthropy simply resisted all attempts to help.

As a rule though, the Wizarding population left the far more massive Muggle population to their own devices. Out of part self-protection, part-paranoia, something Luna had never been able to quite understand.

The onions did just what she had hoped they would, distracting the animal from its intent to attack again. Sam's massive form moved between the animal and the witch, even while it continued to try to scrape its tongue and get the plant out of its mouth. If it had swallowed anything at all, it would be busy vomiting later, then possibly death if it did not get rid of it all. Funny that something so benign to humans could incapacitate another predator.

She grinned at Sam's laugh, even while she did not understand how it was amusing. Odd Not-Muggles.

With a sort of cut off sound of alarm at the other animal snapping at the man in front of her, as well as at him injuring the wolf, Luna felt a measure of relief as the animal backed away. The onioned wolf whimpered, then yipped, and the pair obviously decided to find easier prey than the two humans they had met so far, because the turned and bounded away into the trees. Quickly gone out of sight.

Sam took in a deep breath through his
nose, trying to expel all thoughts of Madison as he let it out slowly. It didn't work. Instead he found himself remembering her final moments as she begged him to pull the trigger. I don't want to die. I don't. But I can't live like this.

He swallowed down a lump in his throat and squinted at Luna. "Muggles," he said, through the dryness of his mouth and gave Luna a tight smile as if to say he'd been paying attention. "It doesn't work on muggles."

Sam raised his eyesbrows in surprise at the wolves' hasty retreat and then looked at Luna. She looked a little pale and as she turned to watch the wolves go he caught the patchwork of red across her back. His mouth curved into a concerned frown as he stepped up beside her. "Are you okay?" he asked, trying to read her expression. He gestured towards her back. "That looks pretty bad."

He looked around the forest, not sure what else might be ready to attack and then tried to figure out where they were. He tried to remember the survival crash courses his dad had given him and Dean when they were younger. He had known more about first aid than most kids his age by thirteen. You never knew when it would come in handy on a hunt. His father's voice suddenly came back to him and he moved towards the nearest tree, studying the way the bark grew on it. One side was definitely thinner than the other.

"I think this is the way back," he said, nodding in the direction the thicker bark was pointing. "I'm not entirely sure, but...I think, that's right." He looked at the rope around them and reluctantly bent down to pick it up. They might need it.
