Who:  Remy & George
What:  Moving on from the carnival, Gambit goes West to the library.
When: 0942 - Day 9
Where: Near the library.
Rating: PG-13 for possible language.
Status: Complete

The more he explored this place, the more Gambit decided that these people hadn't collected up the most special, or most important of a set of people, as the Doctor had imagined.. but rather, these people had collected the strangest of those people that they could find. Wolverine, the Doctor, the wolf lady, and Edward? What had been up with his hands? It made the Cajun shiver some just thinking about it. Not complete. What did that mean, anyway? Well, he wasn't going to think hard on it, at any rate.. not yet. He had other things still to figure out. Wolverine had said there were thirty to forty people here, and Remy had only met four.. it meant he had a Hell of a lot of people yet to encounter, and he was sort of looking forward to it. As long as they were all as strange as the first three he'd met. It, ironically, made Gambit feel a bit more.. well.. normal.

As he approached the next building, he looked it over carefully, squinting his eyes down to read the words carved into the stone above the entrance. The Library. That could be useful. And.. was that a tree growing out of it? This place got stranger by the minute. Still, he made his way half-way up those steps, before turning around to sit down on them and pull that small journal out of his jacket pocket. Black and red eyes rosed up to the building across the way. That looked like some sort of.. dance hall? Bordello? Well, that would be welcome, and the thought made him smile, even as he saw the small marker that identified it as a theatre. Oh well.

His journal regained his attention and he stared down in it for a moment before drawing three circles and labeling them, then making a few lines to indicate roads. The last circle was added, with the label of Theater, and he was closing the book, then standing up again. An agile twist on the stairs had him facing the right way, and Gambit was headed up and to that library, pushing the doors open as quietly as he could manage before stepping inside.

"Hello?" The Cajun called into the tree-ridden building. That was about the neatest thing he'd seen. But he didn't stop there, he headed on silent feet further into the building, looking around in an attempt to assure himself it wasn't going to collapse on his head.. and once he was certain of that, the Cajun slowly sat down on a bench near the central desk at the front and tugged out his journal again, looking it over and remembering what the Doctor had said. Whatever he wrote in there, other people could see? Well, he'd give it a try.

He smiled more brightly, flashing white teeth when she laughed at his joke. Well, it was good to know that at least someone here was still capable of laughter. "You t'ink 'das funny? You have uh pretty smile, Chere." LeBeau couldn't stop hitting on people if it tried, it just came natural to him. And he was moving forward, lifting his eyebrows at her when she asked him if he was new.

"Oui, jus' arrive las' nigh', in 'de fores'. You been here uh while?" It was always one of his first questions, he wanted to know who'd been here the longest, because it was very likely that the people who had been here the longest could be the key to getting out of here. Either they were the reason for this whole.. experiment, or perhaps they were even one of the people working to keep them here, and was disguising themselves as one of the trapped people.. better to study, perhaps. But Gambit was certainly starting to keep mental tabs. He'd start writing his notes in the book, eventually, but not yet.

"What's your name, Chere?" Might as well get introductions over with, it was going to have inevitably, and it would be better to start calling her by her name.. at least some of the time. Most women remained 'Chere' or 'Petite'.

George sort of blushed and lowered her head. This could prove to improve her mood after seeing someone dead (that she didn't know would be dying) yet. "Ah, thank you." She said, swallowing hard when he moved.

"Yeah, over a week by my count..." She started, and then she looked at him even closer than before, and suddenly she knew what she thought was 'off' about him. His eyes. His eyes were black and red. He had black and red eyes. "Holy shit!" She exclaimed, and craned her neck to look better. She was still looking when she answered his other question. "I'm George." She said distractedly.

"Over a week, eh? 'Dat seem like it make you one o'da people 'dat been here 'de longes'. You been stayin'.. Chere?" He paused in his question as he noticed that she was staring at him funny. But when she suddenly cursed and tilted her head to the side, the Cajun realized what she was looking at and he slowly smiled again, lifting both of his eyebrows expectantly. She was looking at him like so many others had. Surprise. Maybe a little fear. And interest. "Nice t'meet you, George. Seem like a bit of uh mascul'ne name for such uh pretty lady, non?"

Though, even as he asked, Gambit was tilting his head to mimic the way she was craning her neck to look better at his eyes. "You see 'dem better if you come closer." The Cajun was speaking more softly now, enticing the younger woman to come nearer and get a better look at his very oddly colored eyes. "I ain' gon' bite.. not less you wan' me to." Flirt. Bad, evil flirt. But with a silver tongue and that charm, the wit -- and the slight boost it all got from his powers -- well, most women didn't stand a chance. Even that smile was so enticing. "You can call me Gambit." Finally, as an introduction.

"Everybody calls me that from birth, I like it." Although being called a pretty lady actually felt a little bit good to George, despite her being much more interested in his eyes now.

George looked away for a split second after he noticed, but she did walk to stand closer to him anyway. Although after what he said about biting, George gave a sort of not-really-there nervous laughter. "Hi Gambit. What's with the eyes?" She finally asked, flat-out.

"'Dey been like 'dat from bir't, I like it." He smiled more, having mimicked her response, and he was leaning down so she could get a bit of a better look. "Hi, George." Her name, though, with his thick accent, came out sounding more like J-or-sh. But it was close enough. However, after a few seconds, he straightened up again. "You be a bit young t'be wan'erin' out here all 'lone, non? Where you stayin', mon petite?" Young. Well, at least young looking. If she wasn't young, it couldn't be helped.

George had to work very hard not to be charmed, it seemed. But she did smile at him having mimicked her answer, although she was still a little bit nervous from being so close to a man she'd only just met, even if it was for analytical purposes. When he straightened up, she took a deep breath, and a deep sigh.

"I don't know...I think I'm probably as old as you are. Or at least as old as you look." In this place, you never knew. "It also depends on what you find too young to be wandering around alone. I'm 23, if that helps your calculations." She shrugged. She knew reapers stayed mostly the same from death, so she probably might not look a day over 18. Was that it?

"You look young'r, but maybe 'dat 'cause you just age well, non?" He lifted his eyes then to look around the place, focusing first on the rows of books, then on the tree, and back to the young woman in front of him. About the same age as he was. Maybe just a little bit older, but Remy didn't really know, he didn't know how old he was. But since she hadn't answered his question, he was asking again:

"Where you stayin'? Somewhere I coul' wa'k you? Or you plannin' on stayin' in here an' gettin' som' Bible Readin' done?" That thought still amused him and had him smiling wider once again, head tilting a bit and forcing that red hair to swing into his face. He needed a cut.. or a hair tie. Either would please the Cajun.

Or because I'm technically kind of dead, George thought but didn't say. She chose instead to shrug, and give him a polite smile for the compliment.

"I'm staying at the theater." She did snicker at his question; the Bible really wasn't for her, except if she wanted to hit someone over the head with one, apparently. "Okay, you can walk me, but hang on I'm going to get the books I came for." At this, George turned around and ran towards the shelves she'd come from, taking the two books she'd found interesting, and coming back in less than a minute.

"Have you got a place to stay yet?" She asked Gambit while busy putting the books inside her purse. Luckily, they were pocket versions.

"'Dat's right across 'de stree'." It wasn't a question, but rather a statement, because he'd just seen it out there. "I prom's I won' get you los'." Not walking her across the street, anyway. The Cajun would patiently wait and watch as she went to collect the books she wanted from the tree-littered library, before coming back to him and beginning to stash them away in her purse. Interesting things, purses. He wondered where she'd come across that.. everything of his had been taken from him, except the clothes on him.

"Place to stay? Non. I talk to Le Docteur, 'dough, he show me to le musée, maybe I go back 'dere when 'de sun go down, try to get some shut-eye." The Cajun smiled again, but was turning with her to head back for the large double-doors that would take them outside once again. He opened one for her and stood aside, waited for her to go through, then followed her out into the late morning sunlight and down the several steps leading up to the library. "You ever had 'dem do experimen' on you, Chere?"

Well she knew that. It didn't mean that he couldn't walk her. Or that she didn't want him to.

"Oh, you've met the Doctor? Nice guy." George commented, nodding approvingly. "But if you think it's too crowded, the theater's larger and there's not that many people there, we're pretty scattered." Not that she was trying to get him to go sleep where she slept, it was just George trying to be helpful.

George went through the door and thanked him, before looking up at the sudden weird question. "Um...Yeah. Twice. One involved being tied up to another girl in the woods, and a tiger and a knife stuck to a tree, while the other involved waking up naked next to an equally naked stranger with no recollection of how either of us got there." She explained quickly. He might as well be ready.

"Yeah, he's nice. Clever." He'd use that word when describing the Doctor forever, now. Because he was clever.. he was brilliant. "I take a look when I get back 'dere, maybe I en' up on your doorstep. You sleep 'der 'lone?" Or were there more people there with her? He was slowly crossing the street with her (not bothering to look both ways.. no cars..) as they headed to the theater.

However, when she went into detail about the experiments, his eyebrows went up curiously. "Tie' to ano'ter girl in 'de woo's? But wit' clo'ths on, oui?" Shame if they were.. shame if they weren't Cajun couldn't win that one. "Wha' happen? A tiger?" That was.. one of a hundred strange things he'd heard just today. Just in nine hours time. "You wake up nake' next to uh strang'r? Male? You don' know him? You ain' met everyone in 'dis box yet, Chere? You ain' got no interes', or you ain' got 'de time?" But he didn't understand how she couldn't have the time... they literally had nothing else to do.. or so it seemed.

But seconds later, they were moving up the stairs of the Theater, and coming to a stop at the doors, because he was interested more in talking to her now than taking her back 'home'. But the clock was ticking, and he was already late meeting Wolverine. He was gonna be mad.

George nodded, agreeing wholeheartedly. "Yeah I sleep alone as in there's nobody around me, but there's more people there. Though, you know, it's a huge place, we hardly even notice each other." And having had a roommate every day since death, George was starting to miss some interaction in the wee hours of the night, even if just to get a glass of water from a kitchen the theater didn't have.

"With clothes on, that first time. We had to do some gymnastics so the girl could reach the knife, we cut ourselves free and then...Well then we had to kill it. Also, I'm sorry my mind's a bit fuzzy on the details by now, but I think it was a lion, actually." At his rapid fire questions about the other experiment, George laughed, lowering her head. "No, it was a girl, Lexie. She's a doctor."

George stopped to look up at Gambit, shrugging as she supported herself on the door handle of the theater doors. "A bit of both, I guess? We're a lot of people, and we're all trying to survive while trying to figure out ways of leaving this place. And almost every day, someone new shows up. I doubt everyone's met everyone else, actually."

When she announced that the other person was a female, it made Gambit's eyebrows go up again, but the smile stayed on his face. "'Das tragic." Yeah right. He was enjoying it. Probably picturing it in his mind.. then again, maybe not. Rouge occupied most of his thoughts these days.

"Maybe you all shoul' meet up, non? Ga'ther, ask ques'ions. Maybe you all fin' somet'in' 'dat someone can do, an' it help someone else do somet'in' need to be done. Maybe split up accordin'." It made perfect sense to Gambit, who had worked in a team for part of his life.. he'd also worked alone part of his life, and it was always easier when you had someone to watch your back.. unless you couldn't trust them. Then it only made things worse.

"You got any frien's here? People you known from somewhere else? Or jus' all people you met here?" He'd take all this knowledge and turn it into something, eventually.. but right now, he was just gathering it up, storing it away.

"Tell me about it..." George mumbled, looking away. She listened to Gambit's suggestion with furrowed brow. "I don't know, we tried that once at the Carnival, didn't really amount to much. We're all very different people, and usually when something important goes down, it goes down via journals. Of course some have gathered to try and break the glass, build shelters when things were really getting ugly, and stuff like that." George was used to both being by herself and working with a team, although with these people she hardly knew? The former fit her much better.

Shaking her head, she sighed. "No. Just people I met here, I get along fine with a lot of people, but I wouldn't call them friends..." She was still just a little bit antisocial, after all.

"Non? Seem to me like some 'de people here coul' help figure somet'in' out. But if it didn' work 'fore, may not work even if we try again, non?" But it didn't mean he wouldn't. Though, when she mentioned she had no friends here, no people she'd call friends, he nodded once, sending that red hair swinging some. He could understand that.

"You ain' got no one t'watch your back then? You shoul' fin' someone. If people gettin' taken and havin' experimen's done, you shouldn' be 'lone, less you can' help it. Har'er to take big groups, you know?" But with those words of street wisdom, the Cajun was smiling again, quite easily. "So what is it you do, Chere? You specialize in attackin' people wit' books? Or maybe you still in college?" What sort of skills did she have, that would make her valuable, was what Gambit was actually asking..

"I don't know, frankly. This has been all too confusing for everybody, I think, nobody's thinking straight. But maybe we should try again, I don't know, maybe we can figure this out..." She didn't bother telling him about the mindfuck of that person who seemed to know all about everybody, and fucked with them through codes and ominous little phrases. Someone else could fill him in on that, surely.

George raised an eyebrow at Gambit as she looked up at him. "I can watch my own back pretty well, but thanks. I'll look into it." Though she disliked the idea of having a group that wans't her own very much. Plus, everybody had already grouped up and didn't seem too keen on bringing her in, which was just fine by her. She wasn't going to beg.

Well, she was never going to live the real bible bashing thing down with this guy, was she? George smirked, and shook her head. "Well I suppose a guy with black and red eyes has seen everything, right? I'm a reaper, in the real world. I died and came back to life. Sort of." Well what the hell, after all she'd seen so far - including the hanging body of Ryuzaki's friend today - it didn't seem to matter anymore whether people actually knew what she was about or not.

To know about that sort of man might have been beneficial for Gambit.. it would be something good to know, so he could better prepare. To know what he might be up against. Because the Cajun had skeletons in his closet, that if released, might go on a skeleton-killing spree. That'd be bad for everyone.

"I'm sure everyone here can wa'ch 'dere own back, Chere, don' mean 'dat 'dey can do it better 'dan uh par'ner coul'. Jus' t'ink 'bout it, can' hur'." However, he'd leave it at that and move quickly onto the next subject. Wait -- was she commenting on his eyes? Just because he had strange eyes, he'd seen everything? .. Okay, well, she had that somewhat right. He'd certainly seen a lot. Especially just today.

"Uh reap'r? Like Dea't? You take people t'where 'de gon' spen' 'ternity?" After a long pause, his mouth curled up widely. "'Dat's 'bout 'de mos' awesome t'ing I ever heard, Chere. So how you en' up here? Ain' 'dat easy t'jus' grab Dea't, non?" He was taking this all pretty easily.. so far. But when he finally made it full circle around the town and found that hanging body? He might not be so easy going anymore.. okay, yes he would. But he'd be a lot more on-edge.

And no. No, she was never going to live that down. Gambit was going to tell everyone that she'd tried to assault him with a Bible. And he was going to do it with a smile on his face.

Yeah, well, unless she changed her mind suddenly, he wasn't going to hear it from her. Because at this point, George was very much exhausted and really unable to piece a succinct and relevant summary of past events for a newcomer. In sum, she was pretty useless.

George nodded reluctantly at Gambit's conclusions about what she'd told him. It was always weird to explain herself and what she did. But it was cool that he at least wasn't running away screaming thinking she was going to actively kill him. "I'm not really Death. Death happens. I just take the souls of the living when they're about to die, so they won't feel it. And then, I lead them in the right direction." There. She was getting better at this.

"I'm basically a human, except I can't really die or be permanently injured, and I died before so I'm someone else, not really me. Back there. Here, I'm me, good old me." And now, it was downhill again.

"Well, if you're dea', you can' use 'de same body, rigt'? You'd gotta be someone else not you. Else everyone woul' scream an' run, 'cause 'dey t'ink you a zombie." Yes, Gambit had comic books of all flavors. Don't judge him. And he'd been around the block before.. this sort of thing didn't phase him much, and he could make comic-book logic out of most everything.

"But what you do, it soun's good. Sometime dyin' woul' be painful, non? You save 'dem 'dat, soun' good t'me. So you take an' lead 'de people who die here? Or now that you all.. back to norm'l, not 'someone else', you can' do 'dat anymore?" He had a lot of questions, but would pick and choose what he asked.

George shrugged. "It's kind of weird like that. I'm me, but not really, although sometimes I am...I don't know." She did snicker at his zombie remark; more so because her sister had figured her out and she didn't even need to see George's actual body to know who she was.

"You be okay here, 'den? I promise t'meet uh frien' at 'de gym at dawn.. lil' bit la'e but bet'r la'e 'den never, righ'?"

The Cajun gave her a quick wink before turning down to moving quickly, almost hopping down a few steps, until he was on the ground and could turn to face her again. "You ever need me f'somet'in', or you jus' wan' see me 'gain, you write me in 'dat journal, non? I come to you." George smiled when he called her Petite, though she was instantly mortified that she had. What was this, easily-flattered day? "Sure, I'll be fine, go ahead." She said, waving her hand dismissively. And then she smiled again at his wink. Idiot she called herself.

"Um, okay. Sure." Though she wasn't sure why she'd ever need him, despite not being a bad idea at all to see him from time to time. He was cute, after all. Red eyes and all. She waved back at him, nodding. "Later."
