Day 9: Early Morning
Who: Jack Sparrow & OTA (and I do mean ALL)
What: Looking for the rum
When: Early morning
Where: Pharmacy/Liquor Store
Rating: PGish, probably some alcohol content
Status: Active

It had been cold yesterday and now it was hotter than a dead man's corpse on deck in the sun. This place had to be in the middle of some mystical portal to the underworld or something like that. Jack wasn't sure but he did know that he was nowhere near any sort of water and therefore under no obligation to captain a ship. He had none of his personal affects, including the compass, but at least he had his hat. It all pointed to him not having much else to do other than look for the rum.

He had half-stumbled out of the forest at some point yesterday afternoon after wandering around aimlessly and hopelessly lost in the dense trees for hours. From there he had happened upon the old ghost town with the strange-looking buildings with their signs in languages he could not read or understand. Looked like he wasn't in the Caribbean anymore if there were no Creole translated signs. He didn't read English even if he could speak it. He'd spent the night, sprawled out in the heart of a massive, hollowed out oak. Good enough protection from the elements as it warmed up.

So when he woke up, still here in the tree with no fresh sea breeze blowing, he smiled to himself. He'd been dreaming of the day he'd spent on the deserted island, very much like this place, the rum runners had used to avoid detection. He'd ambled around until he found a building with bottles in the window. Aha! This was what he wanted. With wobbly legs, he bobbled inside the building with a look on his face as though he had just found a long lost treasure.

Sarah Jane found that she had trouble sleeping her first night in captivity. She wasn't surprised. There were too many thoughts in her head, circling round and round, as she tried to sort out what was going on. Meeting the Doctor had that effect on her. She wasn't exactly frightened of the place, not that she'd admit to herself at the moment, anyway. She was trying to approach it like a puzzle, the way the Doctor would. Something to figure out. So when she decided that the hole she'd tucked herself into at the tunnel of love in the carnival wasn't doing her any favors, she got up, stretched, and decided to wander, have a look around.

She walked through the town, hands shoved into her pockets. It was still cool, but she could tell it was going to be warmer than yesterday. Not too many people about, that she could see. She didn't want to venture into any of the buildings just yet - she didn't want to frighten anyone who might be sleeping inside - but she could get a good look at the place. Her spatial memory wasn't as good as it had been in her youth, but it was still far better than many people's. She kept her eyes peeled, glancing around a she went. Even if she wasn't exactly frightened, she wasn't stupid. She had to exercise caution in an unknown place.

As she walked, she caught sight of a person up the road from her. She blinked and peered at him carefully as he ambled toward a building. He looked...he was dressed in period clothing. Someone from the past, then? She continued forward. He was awake, at least, and was someone else who lived here. Sarah knew it would be best to meet her fellow prisoners sooner, rather than later.

She paused outside the building he'd stepped into, regarding it with a critical eye. Liquor. Lovely. Still, if it helped some people. She took a step in after him. "Hello?" she called quietly. "Good morning!"

Jack wandered down the first aisle of bottles. The liquor came in a vast array of colors and sizes with labels bearing words he'd never seen. Some of them blatantly stated "rum" for which he was grateful. He wasn't sure he had the stomach to mix his liquors this morning. He wanted to good stuff and that was it.

His normal walk was not so frazzled but he was enjoying his moments of ponderation with the bottles, trying to figure out if he wanted dark or light rum in a large or small bottle with a blue or green label and a white or red top. So he was all but ambling in a clumsy way with his finger trailing along the bottles making a nice clinking between them as they knocked into each other on the shelves.

Which is why he nearly collapsed onto the floor, tripping over his own feet when he heard a voice behind him. He managed to keep himself upright, after much teetering and whoa-ing with arms flailing at his sides. Then, as though none of that had happened, he turned toward the visitor and smiled broadly. Removing his hat, he held it to his chest and bowed deeply with his other hand out at his side. A low, sweeping gesture made then he stood up and smiled more.

"Good morning, m'lady. And how might you be this fine day in our captivity?" he asked in his most charming of tones. She looked almost like his mother, or would if he squinted his left eye and turned his head at a 45 degree angle. One was always polite to ladies.

Was it possible for the man to be drunk already? Sarah watched his progress down the aisle, worried he was going to stumble into a shelf and bring the bottles crashing down around him. But then, he turned, sharp as a pin, and bowed to her. An act then? Still, he was quite charming, and manners always went over well with Sarah Jane, at least when they seemed genuine.

"As well as one could expect," she said, offering another smile. "I've been better, I've been worse. And you?" she asked. She ventured farther into the shop, approaching the man with only minor hesitation. She held out her hand for him to shake. "Sarah Jane Smith. It's a pleasure to meet you," she said.

Placing his hat back on his head with as much flourish as he'd removed it, Jack smiled pleasantly revealing several gold teeth amongst the amazingly pearly whites. How he, a pirate, kept his teeth in such good condition whilst sailing the seas and nary a travel toothbrush even invented yet was a well kept secret for Captain Jack Sparrow. He had his ways.

Hesitantly though, Jack took her hand in his. Turning it over, he brushed a polite kiss to her knuckles before releasing it to her. He wasn't used to any ladies offering their hand to be kissed. Not to him. He'd seen plenty of kissing of knuckles where Elizabeth had been concerned. She was a proper lady just like this one seemed to be. Even if she did wear pants. That was a bit confusing to Jack but he took it in stride.

"The pleasure is all mine, Sarah Jane Smith. Captain Jack Sparrow at your service. Are you in need of the fine selection of rum we have before us?" he asked and smiled another toothy smile at her.

Sarah Jane was surprised when the young man took her hand and kissed it. She'd been expecting a hearty handshake. But, given his period clothing, perhaps this was more appropriate for him. She offered him a friendly smile to match the one he'd given her as he let go of her hand.

"Captain?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. Given his attire, he had to captain a ship of some sort. "You're the second Captain Jack I've met," she said, the irony of this not lost on her. He was certainly as...friendly...as the Torchwood captain. She shook her head when he inquired about the alcohol. "I'm just exploring," she said. "I haven't seen much of this strange town yet, and haven't met many people. Thought I'd introduce myself, though."

"Captain, yes." He looked mildly nonplussed to find out there was another Captain Jack in this place. That did not bode well especially with all of the black magic in the air. He didn't like that one bit. "And who might the other Captain Jack be?" he asked, feigning more curiosity than the hesitancy he felt.

Jack hadn't been aware there were many more people in this town other than the grouchy older man and the bizarre young one with the peacock personality. It was a little unsettling to know there were others that he hadn't seen but he could take that in stride. Perhaps one of them knew how to get out of here to the sea. He wasn't in a hurry, mind you. He was quite at his leisure now that he saw the inordinate amount of rum available for the taking.

"And have you seen much in your explorations? Is the sea close by?" he asked politely, making conversation as he turned his attention intermittently to the rum. He wanted to choose a bottle but he didn't want to be rude. To look even more interested, he leaned in slightly and twisted one braid of his beard between his fingers. "Are there any women other than yourself?"

"He's a very dear friend, Captain Jack Harkness," Sarah replied. She slipped her hands into the pockets of her jacket, mostly for a place to keep them so they weren't hanging limply at her sides. "Although, he isn't a captain in the same way you are, not a naval captain."

Come to think of it, Sarah Jane wasn't quite sure what Jack was a captain of. She didn't think Torchwood had ranks like that, and the man hadn't been in UNIT, of that she was quite certain. Perhaps something to do with his life before Torchwood, then. She made a mental note to inquire about it one day.

She shook her head sadly at his question about the sea. "No water anywhere about that I've seen, I'm sorry. And we're apparently surrounded by a giant glass wall, so no hope of getting near the sea, or any large bodies of water." She shrugged. She could imagine how he must feel, being away from something that was such a part of him. Not being near Luke made her fret quite a bit. She raised her eyebrow at this Captain Jack's final question. "Several," she said, her voice a bit flat. "And quite a few gentlemen as well." Perhaps she was reading into his words too much, but the gesture and wording made her think he might be a bit...lewd. And that wouldn't do anyone any good at all. Still, best to be polite.

"As far as what else I've seen," Sarah continued, her tone changing again to a more open sounding one, "the town seems to be surrounded by woods, up until the glass. And everything here is in pretty bad shape." She glanced at the bottles lining the shelves around them. "It wouldn't surprise me if some of that's gone off."
