Day 8 - Late Afternoon
Who: Kimihiro Watanuki & Ianto Jones
What: meeting
Where: close to the thrift store
When: Day 8, late afternoon
Rating: PG for starters
Status: Active

Watanuki had been twiddling his thumbs in the museum for the most of the day, and was getting tired of it. It looked as if everybody had something to do, be it trying to fight the Weevils or figuring out how to break the glass wall. He had cooked for everyone at lunchtime (a poor meal, though, despite their best efforts there wasn't a variety of provisions) and he'd helped clear the snow in front of the building, but that was it. He could have tidied up, cleaned the dust from the rooms, folded the clothes hanging around; but he didn't want to intrude on the privacy of the people who slept in the museum. They had been kind enough to let him and Domeki stay for the night, he could hardly go and rummage through their private things.

He glanced at the sky outside. He was getting good at figuring out which time it was even without a watch, and it probably wouldn't be dinner time for another two or three hours yet. Domeki and Tinkerbell were definitely taking too long to arrive, and there was no note from them in the journals.
Watanuki decided that going out for a while wouldn't be a danger. After all it was still daytime, and he was bound to run into Domeki and the others midway. If he didn't, it would mean that they had wandered off somewhere else and therefore he would be entitled to scold them for acting reckless, and in the meantime he'd check if the thrift store was accessible.

He sneaked out of the museum without anyone noticed. He didn't want anyone to worry if they saw him going out alone, but he didn't know anyone so well to ask them to join him.
The weather was definitely warmer than the day before and Watanuki was surprised when he remembered that the way to the museum had seemed to be miles long. Now it was just a short stroll, even though there were puddles everywhere and after only a few steps his shoes were covered in mud.

Watanuki looked around at Ianto's question.
"Most of the water is certainly coming from under the door, but I'm afraid some might be coming from the back too," he said, splashing through the shop.
He pointed to some dark spots on the wall. "Here the walls are getting damaged. But I wouldn't know how to fix this," he concluded with a sigh.

Walking to the counter he rummaged behind it for a moment and retrieved the mop he'd stored there after the cleaning.
"We could use the moth-eaten shirts to soak up the worst of the water," he agreed. "But look at the mess! This place really is terrible."
He started mopping up the water from the floor, still grumbling.

Well now. This was someone after his own heart. Just when Ianto was wondering whether there was a mop and if they were going to have to bail out the shop, Watanuki delivers. He was, frankly, impressed.

"Fair enough. I do know how to repair it, but I don't have the right skills. Honestly, I think taking a match to this place might be the best solution. But that'd mean we'd have to rebuild it." And there weren't any resources like that around here.

While Watanuki mopped, Ianto busied himself with finding the worst of the moth eaten clothing and sopping up water from around racks and counters, then going outside to wring out the fabric.

Watanuki shook his head. Rebuilding the store was definitely impossible. He didn't even know if there were any tools they could use to patch up the worst of the damage.
"Let's hope we don't get another snow storm like yesterday," Watanuki said, shaking his head. "It was really... strange. How the weather changed so suddenly."

Strange and disconcerting. Granted, it wasn't the strangest thing that had happened in this place, but it was still a bloody nuisance.
Watanuki was glad he didn't have to clean all of the place on his own, but he felt a pang of guilt when he noticed that the hems of Ianto's clothes were getting ruined.
"I'm sorry about your suit," he said. After unsuccessfully trying to clean his uniform, he knew it was impossible to get rid of those mud stains.

"Thank you, but don't worry about it. I'd rather my suit be ruined than me, to be honest." Muddy clothes were a pain but if he was alive and together mentally enough to fuss at the mud, he was fine. It was when the mud stopped bothering him and he ceased to notice it that he felt he should worry.

"Was it cold before the snow storm? I'm willing to bet that this isn't just a thaw in winter weather." Ianto looked up at the sky through the window, as if he could divine the weather patterns with just his eyes.

Watanuki grinned, a bit wearily. He could totally relate to Ianto's feelings. It was already a relief to be alive and well, all in all, and he could bear walking around dressed in baggy clothes if they kept him warm.
To be honest, today the weather was a bit too warm.
"I think it wasn't quite as warm as today," Watanuki said, trying to remember. He hadn't paid much attention to the weather before the snowstorm. "But I'm not sure this town has got normal seasons like winter and summer."

He paused a moment from his work to glance at Ianto. He tried not to be curious about other people, but with everyone coming from different places he had wondered about his new acquaintance.
"Forgive me for asking, but where are you from?" the boy asked. From the cut of his clothes and his features he looked occidental, probably from Watanuki's own time, but he have preferred if Ianto could tell him. It would be awkward to meet another person from the future.

Ianto nodded, as if satisfied with what Watanuki was saying. It seemed to confirm some of his guesses, at least. He'd have to go back through the journals and do a bit of research to confirm it all, but nothing in this town was as it seemed. Even the weather.

"I think everything here has been fabricated. I don't think this really was a town to begin with, I think it was built like this on purpose. The weather, the wildlife, everything is being controlled. There's no way any weather anywhere would behave like this." There was just no way. Ianto didn't like it, but then there was little to like about this place. Not nothing. Just .. very little.

"Ah, Cardiff. Wales. Um. In Britian?" Because he's had several people look at him blankly when he mentioned Wales. Once someone even connected him to real whales. It was frustrating. Everyone knew about Scotland, but mention Wales and all you got was confused stares and worse: 'Oh, you mean England!'.

He wasn't touchy about it at all, oh no.

Watanuki nodded glumly at Ianto's words. He'd had misgivings about the whole place ever since his arrival, and every passing day increased his dislike for the place.
"It feels fake," he agreed, shaking his head and trying to put into words the sensation of despair that the town gave him. "Hollow."

"Britain?"
Watanuki was puzzled for a long moment - he'd never been very good at geography. Then his face lit up with remembrance. "Oh, yes!" he exclaimed. "In Europe."
He'd never been outside of Japan, so he tended to confuse other countries a little.
"I think we're from the same time as well," he remarked. One could never be sure, and Watanuki remembered that he hadn't able to guess that Kaylee and River were so much into the future, but with Ianto he was almost sure of his guess.

"It's entirely possible. Um. Very early twenty first century, for me. Around 2009." Shannon was from a few years earlier, but that wasn't enough to really mean anything, he had decided. Not when ages ago and ages from now walked around together in this place.

"If I may, might I ask you where you are from?" He could make a guess, he thought. Polite manners and Watanuki's looks spoke volumes. His name? Sealed the deal. Still, it was polite to ask and not just assume and Ianto liked the fellow, so he asked.
