Day 6: Early Morning
Who: Dean Winchester & OTA
What: Warm clothes, please
When: Early morning
Where: Thrift Shop
Rating: R (language - always)
Status: Active

Dean was so ready to be up and moving around. Sleeping on a hard pew in the church had been less than completely restful but he had been so tired that he'd gotten at least the requisite 6 hours. The whole day before had been, with a few exceptions, a huge nightmare of sleep deprivation and frustration. He was decided now that he would focus all of his strength on getting the fuck out of this town. He was definitely not interested in sticking around and trying to work through his demons because that seemed to be exactly what the powers that be wanted him to do here. All signs pointed to forced therapy for Dean Winchester and he was not game for that shit. Not at all.

So if he was going to find somewhere else to stay, because he sure as hell wasn't staying in the museum while Shannon and his brother spooned the nights away pretending they didn't have feelings for each other, and get out of dodge eventually, he was going to need something warmer to wear than what he had. He'd heard the Thrift Shop was chock full of clothes - hideous mostly but clothes nonetheless - and, tracking fresh boot prints through the pristine white snow that had fallen before daylight, he was at the store and inside in no time.

Once inside, Dean glanced around the racks of clothes and made a face. "Oh dude..." he muttered at the ridiculous clothes and then burst out laughing. "This place is an experiment all on its own," he added, chuckling as he wandered through to see if he couldn't find some warmer clothes and perhaps a coat too.

"Credit cards," Luna repeated carefully, "Interesting." Muggles were so strange, buying things without money. Pretend money, when they had money, it just did not make sense. But, for now, she was fine with accepting it just as an oddity of their culture. "Is it like a riddle?" She questioned, "As in the Doctor sounds of Briton, but is not?"

In no rush at all to find something, especially as she was not looking for herself, the witch kind of ambled through the racks of clothes. Still in sight of Dean, if only because she liked to talk to him. It was strange how she was slowly becoming accustomed to the different American accents, recognizing that they were all (despite what she had been led to believe) unique in their own way.

This shop did have the most odd things out there, in there. Everything from glittery lettered words on cotton fabric, to clunky black pieces that looked like something a vampire might wear.

"There are many things," she spoke dreamily, "That most individuals do not wish to believe in, or because they cannot open their minds enough to view other possibilities than their own preconceived beliefs." Dean might have been thinking of Cassie, but Luna was thinking of Hermione and those who thought like her. "Who was harsh to you?" Her fingers curled over the top of the clothing rack, as she looked over it at him, her expression open and soft. Her last question was quiet, not a topic to be shouted in asking.

"Like your trousers?" Luna explained. "Blue tightly woven strands of vegetable fibers?" She liked cotton, it was softer than wool, although not quite as warm. "And my jacket?"

He felt suddenly embarassed to have to answer to anything shady he had done in his past on the road hunting. Half of what he'd done for the sake of keeping people safe sounded like crime for the fun of it when he thought of hearing it through her ears. Instead of answering right out he simply said, "Something like that, yeah."

Weeding through the racks of clothes in search of something warm and not completely barf-worthy was turning out to be more difficult that he'd expected. This place seemed to be endless and he actually looked up at one point to see if he could view the far wall. Yes, there it was. And there was Luna, sunnily wandering like she didn't have a care in the world. Again he completely envied her and found himself choosing a path along the racks of clothes that took him near her again. Which meant, of course, that now he was looking at the same clothes over again. Sort of counterproductive but then again... not really in the long run.

Seeing her peering over the rack at him after asking that question was enough to make him pause for a moment. He took a deep breath and forced himself to answer her in such a way as to not brush her off - which was partially how he wanted to respond because he wasn't sure he could talk about Cassie right now - or somehow cause her to close off. "She was someone I used to lo- know. She should have been more open to it. Like you," he said quietly, ducking his head to look through the racks again.

"Right..." he said absently and then, "Oh right. Yes, denim. I think I have what I need jeans-wise. I'm looking for something thick to go out in the snow. I'm sure it's going to be worse tonight and tomorrow and I don't know if I plan on coming back into town to sleep or not tonight."

They might be trapped in a Bubble Village with monsters growling in the woods, people being kidnapped for experiments at seemingly random, but at least for the moment it was a kind of peaceful. Things could always get worse, so to be able to live in the moment seemed like the thing to do.

For a moment she indulged in humming while exploring the various racks of clothing. She carried her serenity within her like a precious object, something that she only lost at the greatest depths of despair and fear. A protective instinct, how she kept herself sane (no matter what some might say about her sanity), learned as a child and carried to adulthood. Here and there, she picked up items and then placed them back on the rack after looking them over.

When Dean gave his answer, she met his eyes evenly, focused for a moment. It was an uncomfortable subject, she was dreamy, not the idiot she would need to be to miss that, but still... After he spoke, Luna continued watching him for another moment. If she had known how, she would have told him that such people were too closed minded to enjoy life, that they did not even try to understand made their lives seem much less full. With a murmured, "Thank you," for what she considered a great compliment to be recognized for having an open mind to things some did not see/want to see, she returned to her looking.

"Perhaps if we stop searching, we will find what it is you are looking for?" A zen thought that could easily be applied to her own use of magic, that pushing at it instead of simply willing it to flow would do more harm than good. Coming to a complete stop, she closed her eyes and hummed another few bars of music, before walking down the aisle in a rather aimless pattern. Mid-step, she stopped, opened her eyes to look around and found what she was looking for. "Coats!" Not magic, although she wished it was, simply letting the universe guide her for a moment. Or, simply random happenstance, but she liked the universe idea better.

"You're welcome?" he answered, not quite sure why she was thanking him. After a moment he almost asked, Think you could cast one of your Cheering Charms on me?

His pleasant mood was souring as it seemed to do every time Cassie came into his thoughts. Which felt like every time he was close to achieving peace with it. The whole thing had only happened just over a week ago but it felt like a lifetime had passed since then and yet he was still upset over it. He needed to put this to rest, especially when he could be having a much better time with Luna.

Dean chuckled as he had been about to make a playfully snide remark about rubbing the Buddha for good luck but decided to hold his tongue instead, watching her. It worked on him better than any Cheering Charm could have to see her funny little ritual. He followed about three paces behind her and was paying more attention to the way her hair moved and caught the light through the dingy store window than to the racks of clothes around him. He nearly ran straight into her when she stopped and exclaimed, "Coats!" Looking up, a bit sheepish for having stumbled over his own feet to stop himself, he saw there were at least three racks of coats. Her philosophy had worked. Huh, he thought, his expression flowing right into an impressed "what do you know."

"And for her next magical feat, ladies and gentlemen, Luna the Lovely will find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow," he teased, noting the tone of affection in his own voice and snapping his mouth shut. Something about her set him on auto-pilot and he just could not stop himself from liking her. A lot. Even if she seemed oblivious to it. Which was probably a very good thing, he thought. He would only bring her down, he was sure of it.

Yes, Cheering Charms seemed to be quite helpful in the future. At least Luna thought so, considering that even Dean (who she saw as quite cheerful in his own way) was looking down for a short while.

Greensleeves was a beautiful little tune that she often indulged in, not for the fact that it was a ballad about a young, promiscuous woman (some say a prostitute), but because it was something her mother used to hum whenever she put her child to bed each night. The song reminded her subconsciously of both happiness and complete safety. After all, you could not get much safer than in your own bed being tended by your mother, now could you?

When she looked over to the side, he looked as if he had nearly stumbled over her. Dean seemed to move quieter than she had thought, she had barely heard his boot steps at all. And certainly had not realized how close he was.

At his teasing comment, Luna fairly beamed in her smile. Partly for the reference to the star constellation he had made, and her subconscious noting of his tone of voice. "I can't do that." Although she was speaking the truth, there was a sliding in of something fleetingly teasing in her own voice, before it disappeared into the ether again. "I have found coats, without Leprechauns to guard them," she paused to consider. "Well, I believe they are without Leprechauns."

Standing next to her, Dean felt himself relax out of the awkwardness that he'd had after nearly falling on her by tripping on his boots. His arms and legs fell into place and obeyed and the annoying gloom that had threatened to settle over him was gone now. She was so upbeat and uplifting that he just wanted to reach over and touch her. Except he couldn't think like that because if he reached over and touched her he was going to want to hold her hand. And it was all downhill Winchester style after that. He wouldn't do that to Luna. She was too good and Sam's voice rang in his ears telling him that this wasn't like one of those blow by towns where he'd never have to see the girl again. Fuck you, Sam he thought with brotherly annoyance.

"What? You can't find a pot of gold but you can find coats?" he grinned at her over his shoulder as he moved, somewhat reluctantly, away from her to browse the racks for something that would at least keep him warm if not devilishly handsome too. He knew right away that there would be nothing leather without rhinestones or even L.L. Bean-ish and normal. It was all a pile of heavy, thermal coats in various hideous shades as far as he could see. Maybe Luna would have better luck. He hoped so.

He chuckled at her seriousness about Leprechauns. "Do they usually guard coats in the wizarding world?" he asked and chuckled again at the thought of small, midget-sized men in green puritanical hats and big belt buckles guarding the coats staunchly, chests thrust out and little attitudes apparent. "Or are Leprechauns on your list of beings to visit around the world and you're guessing about what they are like?"

"Coats are not usually hidden by mischievous beings fifteen centimeters high," of course, it could be a bit different in his world, a possibility that should not be discounted. "Are they in your experience?" she asked, genuinely curious.

Then she shook her blonde head, "No, not coats. Except their own, they would have little use for such large things here." With a smile she indicated the negative with a small shake of her head, investigating the massive amounts of clothing in front of her. Although for all anyone could know, she could be somewhere else entirely. "Oh no, I have met several before, Ireland is just a short trip away. And, as a child, I was more appealing for them to speak to than an adult." With a glance over at him, she leaned in slightly and dropped her voice to confide a small tidbit.

"I am still not sure what they said, besides to try the mushrooms, I had a dreadfully hard time understanding their speech through the accents."

A dozen or so items were picked up and discarded back to their place on the rack, to await owners who might appreciate them more. The thirteenth coat was black and heavy, seemingly far out of place among the...brightly colored ones that were its fellow rackmates. When she removed it from between a lime green thermal and a pumpkin orange and sun yellow plush jacket, one of the sides fell open, and the reason why it belonged in the odd store was revealed.

The liner was quite extraordinary. Black and decorated with a cartoon version of what she thought were what Muggles called 'burgers.' "If you like this food," she smiled. "It is an interesting item."

He snorted in a laugh so hard that he almost gave himself a bloody nose when she said leaned in to tell him the leprechauns had told her, as a child, to try the mushrooms. He wanted to laugh so badly that he might have choked if he hadn't seen the coat she was looking at. It gave him the best reason to let loose and so he did. Letting his head fall back, he just laughed. And then it wasn't just about the mushrooms or the coat with the hamburger lining, it was about everything else as well. He'd heard the saying "It's either laugh or cry." So this was that moment. And he was laughing. Laughing until his sides hurt and his eyes were tearing. He wasn't even concerned with what she thought about this display. The release was too good. Almost better than sex. Almost.

When the laughing fit had subsided, Dean stood up straight slowly. He had tears streaming down his cheeks that he wiped away with his knuckles. "Sorry, sorry," he whispered in between attempts to start another laughing spree. "Ahhh you have no idea how good that felt," he added hoarsely. "So um coats. Yes, I think the one with the hamburgers will be fine as long as I don't have to look at the lining much. It's the best thing in the place I'm pretty sure."

It seemed she was wrong about Dean's cheerfulness edging away. Either that, or he had snapped or gone criminally insane within a moment over a coat decorated with hamburgers. Which, honestly, she was hoping that he merely was using laughter as stress relief and that it was not a sign of his sanity suddenly slipping away from him.

"Quite alright," Luna told him when he apologized. "It is good for the soul, lightens you when you are heavy." It was something her mother used to say 'laughter is good for the soul.' She gave him a small nod when he decided that the coat would do, and lifted the heavy item to give it to him. "The way you laugh, I like it."

"You are good for the soul, Luna," he answered with a grateful smile tossed in her direction. Then, impulsively, Dean leaned over and kissed Luna on the top of the head. It was simply a quick, affectionate move that felt familiar to him in a way that he didn't like. He wished he hadn't done it immediately but rather than let her think it was her fault, he quickly smiled and pulled the hamburger-lined coat from the hanger and slid into it.

"So what do you think? Can I pass for half way normal in this thing?" he asked, turning around slowly in front of her so that she could give an honest opinion.

He hoped what he'd done just done had slid by without too much notice the way the rest of the things he'd done to illicit reactions had. If he just continued smiling. So he stopped, facing her and raised his brows in a "what do you think?" expression, his most charming smile plastered across his face.
