Edward was never cold. Even though it was freezing and it looked like snow, the creature that raised himself hesitantly on what looked like a formidable set of razorblades did not feel temperature change. He was confused, though... he had gone to sleep in his fireplace, and it had been too warm for ice to stay unmelted for long. A little thrill of excitement ran up Edward's spine, thinking of how beautiful he could make this place look if he had enough ice together at once.

The wild-haired, leather-clad young man then turned his attention to the situation at hand. It was odd that he hadn't worried immediately that he was somewhere other than where he'd thought he was, but Edward often lost track of where he was. It was part of his innocent perception of the here and now, and he knew well enough that impossible things could happen.

He glanced at the woman on the ground nearby. She looked like she was asleep, but a terrible dread gripped Edward. He had seen his father like this, and the rigid unresponsiveness had meant that he would never move again. But almost immediately, Edward was distracted by her bright pink hair. What wonderful hair... he'd never seen anything like it. Bending down, he quietly, happily began trimming the edges with scissors that were, in actuality, his hands.

She turned to him then, eyebrows furrowed in sympathy, and reached over to touch his arm. It was natural reaction, one of comfort. People had to stick together. Dark times and all. "I'm sorry. It's gotta be hard, losing a parent." The Auror had no idea what she'd do without hers, really.

The tic tacs and matches were pocketed, though the water was kept in the box. She'd carry that in a minute. And then there was a funny sound, like plastic being punctured, and Tonks looked to Edward again. "Oh, Edward." It was half in sympathy and half in some sort of wry amusement. She should have thought of that. "I'm sorry! Erm.." The bottle was eyeballed. "I reckon we can find at least another empty one and fill it up with snow or rain."

Nosy to what some might say a fault, she peeked over at his journal. "Well. That's handy, at least. We can write things down, as not to forget them. And make a map when we explore."

Edward flinched very slightly when Tonks touched his arms, as if he wasn't used to being the subject of gentle gestures. "It's OK. Lots of people have been very nice to me. Father didn't wake up, but he doesn't have to take care of me anymore." he blinked, for the first time during their conversation, his lashes appearing very dark against his pale cheek.

He looked up like a rebuked child when she admonished him gently, and seemed surprised when she actually apologized about it. Not that he needed water to survive, but still... it was always a terrible mess when he popped things that held liquid. He'd done it before, so many times that he'd lost count.

Edward wasn't very good at writing, but it seemed that even his pen had come with some sort of device to aid in that. It was a strap of sorts, and it was apparently designed to hold the writing utensil in place. It would be clumsy and difficult to read, but he would be able to form letters. "This is nice!" he exclaimed brightly.

And lots of people would keep being nice to him, if Tonks had her way about it. She smiled though, watching him make use of the contraption that helped him to write.

"That is nice." Well, this place was weird. "Gives us wonky things..but helpful too.." Muttered to herself thoughtfully. So long as it kept being helpful, then they'd be able to get home soon.

Opening her book, she made a cheerful noise. "Mine's keen too!" The woman was flipping through the pages. "There are other people!"

People were usually nice to Edward initially. His helplessness and sweetness ensured this. It was after something went wrong or there was an accident that people started to get angry at him.

"Very helpful!" Edward agreed happily, trying out the journal, writing in it with cramped and unwieldy (but miraculously legible) letters. "I can write! Maybe I can keep a journal, or..." he carefully started to flip through when Tonks said that there was other writing. How strange!

"So many different kinds!" He gasped, with a sort of childlike wonder that was missing in even actual children these days.

"I think that's what they want us to do, whoever brought us here?" She was still browsing through the journals, looking at the pages of unfamiliar writing. The witch was trying to figure out how it worked. What sort of magic linked them together?

Tonks took her own pen and scribbled out an initial journal entry. She looked up when Edward gasped, looking over to her companion with a bright smile. "Too right." She looked around the barn briefly and gave a slight nod. "What say we stay here for a bit, get our bearings, and then try to find a better place to sleep?"
