Entry tags:!dropped, !incomplete, day 05, location: gym, open, sam anders, sid jenkins

Who: Samuel T. Anders, Sid Jenkins, OTA
What: Gym inspection
When: Day 5, Afternoon
Where: The gym
Rating: TBA
Status: Active

According to the map, the gym was somewhere in the direction of the thrift store and the majority of the buildings, then down, which he only understood because it was the opposite direction of the church. At least that's what he thought the map said. Whoever drew it wasn't exactly clear.

Upon approach, the building looked like many gyms he had seen before, just grown over and decaying like most of the buildings. There was a trail among the dirt and dust where people had come and gone from a common door, which told him that this was one of the more frequented spaces around here.

"Do you think someone's in there?" Sam asked over his shoulder to Sid. Every building he had been in so far had been occupied except for the Thrift store, which was eerie when empty. After the fall, Anders wasn't extremely fond of going into building alone, especially after one nearly collapsed on him. To himself, Anders wondered if there would be a setup already for pyramid, only to remember that no one here knew what it was.

The pursuit of pyramid wasn't because he was aching to play. Pyramid had become his distraction from horrible situations and a safe way to blow off steam.

All the previous courts he'd built had been scrap metal and junk. This one, he figured, would be akin to the one at Delphi High, the resistance base. Though he claimed to have no aptitude in it, Sid had a valid point just in time to answer his internal question of what to use. "Yeah, I'm not too good at it myself, but I'd say the bleachers are a good place to start.

"We're gonna need tools."

Rubbing his chin absently, Sid tipped his head a bit to the side and studied the bleachers. "Yeah, we are..." he agreed. In spite of the fact that everything else in this bloody place looked in shambles, the bleachers looked fairly fit, still.

"You reckon they'd have tools in the thrift shop? Like...a...hardware section, yeah?" he asked, raising his eyebrows and looking over at him.

Then the tactical logic of all this kicked in. "We should see if anyone is going to need them for, you know, the water project that Shannon was talking about or whatever..."

So many times during his resistances, Anders found himself siding with pyramid over tactics. War wasn't really his thing. This choice, however, proved to be problematic when they needed to build barricades or work on the underground tunnels and the tools were with the pyramid stuff. "Just in case."

For a moment, Sid just stared back at him with awestruck confusion at the seemingly random statement. Then it dawned on him. "Oh, right! You reckon we should ask her beforehand?" he asked. "Or maybe we can share?" he suggested. "Y'know let them do the water thing first and then we can use 'em for the court?"

Then, with a bit of a sheepish, lopsided smile, he shrugged. "Or we could just ask her what she needs and do it up right quick so we don't have to share," he said with a chuckle, only half-joking.

"Yeah, something like that." Anders wandered over and slipped off his outermost jacket and started to pile up his food and crap from out of his pockets. With all of it, he set aside the knife.

"Alright," he said, putting up his hands, ready to catch the ball. "Throw it here."

Well, that was dismissed right quick. Sid was glad. He'd offered it, but by "we" he'd really meant Anders and someone else who wasn't Sid himself. He held no interest in building things, so while he was more than willing - almost eager - to help build the court for Pyramid, he didn't exactly like the idea of taking on two carpentry projects.

"Right," Sid replied with a nod and, without really realizing it, he took a deep breath and prepared. Anders had said he was a professional in his sport, so Sid didn't want to look like a poof, throwing like a bloody girl, or anything. He chucked the ball to Anders with what he hoped was a masculine but not overly aggressive thrust. That was the easy part. Catching it when Anders threw it back was a gamble...and he'd probably look like a twat because he doubted he'd catch it on the first try. The thought made him want to cringe preemptively.

With a lunge to the side, Anders caught the ball firmly in one hand, but he had to use his other to cradle it. Damn this thing was big. He tried to convince himself that it was an exorcise. "Good, just relax. We're just tossing it. No stress."

Anders had seen thousands of kids throw like that. Intimidated by him or overly eager to play. There was a serenity to the way that Anders played, despite his aggressive nature and penalty scorecard. Without what looked like any effort, he tossed the ball back with the same hand.
