Day 5. Late Evening.
Who: Sam Winchester and The Doctor
What: Talking
When: Late Evening
Where: The Museum
Rating: Let's say PG
Status: Complete

Sam had made his way back from the church slowly, feeling slightly buzzed and enjoying the dark sky above him despite the fact that the wind was cold.  By the time he'd made it back to the museum his nose was numb, though he thought the walk and cool air had somehow worked together to make him feel more alive.

He made his way up the steps and let himself in the front door, his eyes sweeping the room for Shannon.  Her things were spread out in the corner, but he didn't see their owner anywhere.  He moved further inside, making his way down the hallway and wondering if she was having another hard night.  Instead inside one of the rooms he found the Doctor busy at work on something involving what looked like different mechanical parts.

He paused in the doorway, taking in the scene.  The feeling of somehow being a little more relaxed than normal prompted him to step foot inside the room uninvited.  "What are you working on?"

"I certainly hope that's not the case," the Doctor said grimly. He wasn't sure from when Martha had come; but, it was entirely possible that if she had been taken from before the Year that Never Was the Universe was about to end at any moment, literally. "Did you do the same sort of work as your brother?" The Doctor asked nonchalantly, thinking of his conversation with Dean the very first day. While he didn't like the idea of the pair of them being hunters - let alone exterminators, he had a feeling they weren't vigilantes, and that was really all he needed to know.

The Doctor's eyes slipped closed a moment then flashed open. There should have been a siren there. "Close your eyes a second," the Doctor said quietly, closing his own and waiting.

"Uh, yeah," Sam said, not entirely sure how much information Dean had given the doctor about their line of work. He shifted on his feet. "It's sort of the family business." He cleared his throat and fell back on the usual deflection. "What do you do? When you're not building sonic modulators."

Sam obeyed without thinking about why, sliding his eyes shut and then opening them a minute later. "No sirens."

He grinned even as he wondered what had made them stop.

"I'm all for people helping one another," the Doctor replied. "I can see how, from what Dean said, your line of work would be best suited for staying a family affair."

The Doctor, when asked, always had the same deflection himself. "I travel, actually," the whole space and time thing was safe to omit for the moment. That and saving the universe, nobody likes a bragger.

"No sirens," the Doctor beamed. "I suppose this phase of the experiment has ended," he said sort of pensively; not much enjoying the idea that going to sleep would actually be playing in to their captor's plans for them.

Sam was surprised that Dean had shared the family secret so quickly with a stranger, though maybe he shouldn't have been in a place like this. On second thought, it didn't really surprise him that much. Something about the Doctor told his instincts that he was trustworthy and that secrets were safe with him.

"Travel?" Sam asked, somehow sensing that there was more to it than that. "That must be interesting," he said slowly, wondering if the Doctor would say more, but feeling that maybe he shouldn't press for information.

Sam shared the Doctor's smile for a moment before it faded at the realization that there was probably something worse on the way. "I suppose so."

Sam suddenly felt the day catch up with him, feeling exhausted. He sighed. "I'm almost afraid of going to sleep now."

The Doctor thought a moment -- the Winchesters had been fairly forthcoming about their work - unconventional as it might be, and that gave him the sense that perhaps there was a certain element of trust there - something not to be taken for granted.

"Travel - time and space. World, galaxy, universe; that whole sort of thing," he said quite matter of factly. Nothing in his tone indicated a joke, and certainly nothing indicated he was bragging either. It was as if he were being asked what color shirt he was wearing.

The Doctor saw Sam's grin fade, and he felt his own slide off a bit as well. As wearied as he was, it was hard not to think that sleeping might be a fair bit dangerous. "Jack's around here someplace," the Doctor remarked. "He doesn't actually sleep, so we should be alright to at least try and get a bit of rest." The Doctor would have to remember to thank Jack later for this.

Sam's eyebrows shot up at the doctor's words, not quite sure how to take them. He was reminded of his conversation with Martha over the journals. He hadn't actually met her face to face, but he had believed her and he found himself believing the Doctor now, mostly because there was nothing joking about the Doctor's demeanor when he said it. "If I thought there was a simple answer, I'd ask how that was possible," Sam said after a moment. "But it's probably way over my head. Do you know Martha, the doctor?"

Sam nodded. "Me and Shannon usually sleep in shifts. Just to be safe. But thanks, that does make me feel a little better."

"Timey-whimey stuff," The Doctor responded, thankful that Sam hadn't really bothered to ask too many questions about how time travel worked. It's not that he didn't think Sam could or would understand - it would just take a fair amount of time to explain - especially without the TARDIS. "If you'd really like to know, I'll explain it to you sometime," the Doctor offered candidly.

"Martha?" The Doctor asked this only because he hadn't been aware that she and Sam had met. "Martha Jones? She and I used to travel quite a bit together actually. She actually saved the universe," the Doctor beamed. The Doctor's grin was a bit troubled, however, as he sat wondering about Martha - he hadn't heard from her for a while.

"Well, with Jack's agreement, maybe we all can start getting a full night's sleep." The Doctor stretched, turning so that he was leaning back against the wall, looking like he might actually fall asleep at any moment.

Sam snorted softly at the Doctor's explanation, though he thought he would take him up on the explanation at some other time. He nodded serously. "You'll have to do that," he said slowly. Later, when what the Doctor said might actually register through lack of exhaustion.

Sam smiled at the Doctor's high praise of Martha. "No, we haven't actually met met. But we talked a little over the journals and she hinted at time travel, though I wasn't exactly sure what to make out of it."

"Sounds good to me," Sam said, stifling a sudden yawn. He wiped at a bleary eye. "Actually, I think since the sirens have stopped, I'm going to see if Shannon wants to try to get some sleep."

The Time Lord simply nodded - he would, if Sam was genuinely interested that is. Not everyone was interested in the technical side of time travel - though, they always seemed to want to know why his box was bigger on the inside and that was quite full of technical jabber as well.

"Well, I can see how it can sound a bit odd..." Well, actually he couldn't; but, he liked to think it would sound as off as eating a pear out of enjoyment - something possible, but oh so wrong.

"Get some rest," the Doctor pressed as he slouched in his spot getting into a comfortable thinking pose. He needed to let his mind wander a while.

"A little," Sam said, giving the Doctor a small smile. "Still I think she's had some of the best ideas so far, though it was a shame she missed the carnival meeting."

"Yeah," Sam said, with a small nod. "I will. You too, Doctor."

He moved to the doorway, glancing over his shoulder at the Doctor one last time.

"Goodnight," he said, before disappearing into the hallway beyond
