Who: Gorge Lass and Sam Winchester
What: Migraine medication!
When: Day 5, early afternoon
Where: The Pharmacy
Rating: PG-13 for language
Status: Active

It was just too much. As if George's usual mood wasn't already abrasive enough, now she had a miagraine from the noise and sleep deprivation, and even the little fun she'd had at the thrift store with the Doctor only helped for a little while. Now, she wanted to bash something in someone's head repeatedly, if only that stopped the damn siren from working.

Since it didn't, but the migraine was staying put, she decided the next logical step (because her ability to think logically hadn't vanished completely yet) would be to hit the pharmacy and hope to God they had some aspirin or something. Otherwise, George would really kill a bitch.

"Oh, my God, why don't you just materialize?! Damn it." She protested as she rummaged through the contests of the pharmacy, wincing and with eyes half-shut all the while. No wonder she couldn't find the damn aspirin anywhere.

George turned towards him and the asprin bottle caught Sam's eye. He gave her a relieved smile, before he managed to catch her expression.

"Yeah," Sam said, dragging the word out a little. "I know, it sounds crazy, right?"

He glanced over at the counter, straightening the bottles he'd moved aside in his search. He sighed. "What do you do in Seattle?"

Crazy? It sounded scary. Reapers were usually seen as bad things, because where they were death usually followed closely. And even though it wasn't their fault, people might not be so understanding. George gave Sam a nervous little laughter.

Oh, great. What should she answer? Should she tell him the truth like he had told her, apparently? Or should she lie? Fast damn it say something you're staring!

"I...Um, I...Human resources." Half true, anyway. She did have to make a living like people who were...alive. Although the way she had stuttered before giving the actual answer did not sound that great, neither did the hard swallowing or looking at the aspirin bottle seven times in three seconds.

George's nervous laughter didn't make Sam feel any better about his decision to tell the truth. From the way she was now looking at him, it was clear that she thought he was missing a couple of bricks. He gave her his best smile, trying to say I'm really not crazy without saying it.

This was exactly why they didn't say who they were unless they had to. Unless it was a life or death situation and even though Sam was getting used to not having to pack up and move, this was a reminder that even under the worst circumstances and when it seemed like there was nothing to lose by telling the truth, it was easier to go with the lie.

He raised his eyebrows and nodded when she said she was in Human Resources. Now that sounded like a normal job. 8 to 5. No ghosts, no monsters, no demons. He could get behind something as simple as that. "Cool," he said, as she eyed the asprin bottle.

"So, water," he said, reaching back and retrieving the kit he'd recieved when he'd first arrived. He usually kept a gun at the back of his jeans, but he'd gotten into the habit of carrying around the kit instead. He pulled out his water bottle and held it out to George.

Yeah but he could smile all he wanted, George was still afraid that if he found out, he might want to hunt her. And then she remembered she had told Andy, in the beginning, and how they were friends... Might as well ask.

"Hey did Andy ever mention me to you?" It was going to sound weird, obviously, but she didn't care. Better safe than sorry.

Cool? Nothing farthest from cool. She had ended up liking Happy Time, but even then she could agree it was a lame place, and a lame job. Hunting supernatural things - as long as it wasn't reapers - sounded much better.

"Yeah, water." George smiled very faintly at him and took the bottle, popped two aspirins and washed them down. Now, all she had to do was wait for it to work.

Sam's brows moved together as he tried to remember whether or not Andy had mentioned George to him before. With the sirens going and his raging headache it was hard to concentrate. He and Andy hadn't talked for very long before Sam had walked out on him that second night. He remembered meeting George shortly after arriving when he met up with Andy and Luna. But other than that... He paused, his brow smoothing out as he remembered what Andy had told him about George at the very beginning.

"Yeah," he said, slowly. "Now that you mention it, he did. I'd forgotten." The look she'd been giving him a moment ago, suddenly made more sense. "We don't go after reapers," he said carefully. Well, Dean had when he was in a coma, but those were special circumstances. He'd been fighting for his life and Sam wasn't about to begrudge that to anyone, especially his brother. He swallowed. "Whoever's behind this must have some real pull if they managed to trap you here."

Well, shit. She didn't remember telling Andy about her own thing until minutes ago when she promptly asked Sam about it, and now she was kind of sorry she had said anything. Because just because Sam said he didn't go after reapers, it didn't mean it was true.

"You don't? You sure?" She asked suspiciously, not moving another inch. She shook her head and frowned at what Sam said next. "Nah, I'm kind of pretty human, I guess I'm just like anyone with 'powers'-" - She made little signs with her fingers "-that's trapped here too."

"I'm sure," Sam said. He raised his eyebrows and shrugged. "We'd have to be pretty stupid if we did, right? Death is just a necessary evil." He paused. "Not that you're evil. It's just a part of life."

A part of life that his brother and father had refused to accept for their family. He sighed, reminded once again of how much the fact that he was even standing here was against the natural order. He'd died and Dean had brought him back, even knowing how much the grief and guilt of losing their father had almost destroyed him.

He wondered for a moment if someone like George had been present when he'd died. He couldn't remember it. "You're different than I expected," Sam said, truthfully. "I thought reapers would be well, creepy." That's certainly the way Dean had described the one that had almost gotten him back at Roy LeGrange's. He held his hand out for the aspirin. "Though I'm sure a pretty girl makes going a lot easier."

Necessary evil, indeed. One George still didn't quite understand, even after five years of being a reaper, even after having been made 'boss'. She shrugged in acceptance of his answer. He didn't really look like he'd flip out on her and kill her with a bunch of medicine bottles, anyway.

Her own notion of reapers before her own death had also been along the lines of creepy. But, as she found out, it wasn't the case at all. Hell, they didn't even have that many perks, they were just like normal people who just had a job to do.

"Yeah, well, so did I." George shrugged. Handing him the aspirin, she raised her eyebrows at what Sam said next. "Um...Thanks? We need to move through crowds and stuff. It would be pretty hard to go decently unnoticed with the cloak and scythe gimmick."

Sam poured out two aspirin into the palm of his hand and dropped them into his mouth before picking up the water on the counter in front of him and taking a drink. He hoped the things worked double-time because if not he felt like his head might explode at any moment.

His eyebrow raised slightly at George's awkward thanks and then he realized that what he had said was kind of awkward. It may have even come across as flirting instead of the objective comment it was. Great, now he was some creep hitting on a reaper.

"Yeah, I guess not," Sam said with a small nod. He paused. "So what comes after?"

She was beginning to wonder exactly how long it would be before the aspirin took effect. It better be fast, or she might scream. Which wouldn't help at all.

George didn't think twice about what Sam had said, nor did she feel like he was hitting on her. Though, in other circumstances, it might be nice.

"Um...It's weird." George thought back to what she'd seen. Not much at all. "Different for everybody, I suppose. I don't know. I didn't get an after."

Sam studied George's face. "So you died...before you became a reaper?" It made sense, he supposed. Still, he'd always thought of reapers as being separate from humans, like demons.

Apparently he was wrong. About a lot of things. He cleared his throat and twisted the lid of the aspirin back on. "So there's no white light, or anything like that?"

George nodded, surprised a guy with his job wouldn't know something like that."Yeah. In the most idiotic way."

She leaned against some wall and pushed her hair away from her face. Apparently somewhere along the way it had gained a life of its own and decided to rebel against bobby pins. "I didn't see a light." She shrugged. "I saw a thing coming at me, I disappeared and then I came back...People walked through me - which, by the way, is ten shades of fucked up - and then I slowly regained...um...corporeal status. I guess."

Still hard to explain after all that time.

Sam raised an eyebrow at George's remark about her death, though when she didn't offer up anymore details about it he decided not to push. He wasn't sure talking about how you died was exactly good conversation fodder. He was pretty sure if anyone knew enough to ask him how he had died he wouldn't exactly be falling all over himself to tell them.

"So you didn't even get a choice in it," Sam supplied. "I mean between becoming a reaper or moving on?"

Kind of like he hadn't had a choice about coming back. He'd managed not to fall to the level of the other psychic kids by not killing Jake when he'd had the chance at Cold Oak and he'd been killed because of it. He could've lived with that outcome, or died knowing he'd done the right thing, but then Dean had brought him back and the rage he'd felt when he'd seen Jake again had scared him. He had to fight it again, the part of him that might be evil, might be dangerous. He swallowed, leaning back against the counter as he looked down.

"Wow," he said slowly, looking back up at her. "That kind of sucks."

Yeah something about telling a cute guy about how she died by getting a toilet seat dropped on her from an MIR space station just did not sit right with George, which was why she didn't elaborate.

"If I remember correctly, that was pretty much it, yeah. No choice. Either I did it, or kept on living on earth like someone else entirely with no ties to the world, nobody to help me out. So I kind of had to. I wasn't going anywhere, anyway." George shrugged in a "ah, well" sort of way. She nodded at his conclusion.

"Yeah it kind of does." Not to mention knowing her family was right there and being unable to contact them - although she had cheated once or twice - or not really looking like herself to everyone else. But she didn't like to whine, much. Deciding on changing the subject, George thought she might as well ask about Sam and his hunting. If he wanted to answer, anyway. "Um...What sort of stuff do you do, then, when you hunt?"
