Entry tags:!incomplete, day 05, dean winchester, location: church, luna lovegood, sam winchester

Who: Luna Lovegood, Dean and Sam Winchester
What: Beer and Pixie Sticks
When: Evening
Where: Outside the Church
Rating: TBA (Dean has an interesting vocab at times)
Status: Active

Night was in the wings to fall, Luna noticed as she sat on the steps at the front of the church. Back in the pants, button up shirt, suspenders and jean jacket she had worn not long before, it was cool but not extremely cold for her. Growing up in England and going on regular trips to Icelandic countries tended to keep one used to cold temperatures as a rule.

Dean had specified that his and Sam's father had been his height, when she had asked if either of their parents had been half giants, but he had never said how tall he  was. So, perhaps, he was another extremely tall individual. The Second Sam she had met that morning when he had arrived with Martha had also had attributes of a quarter giant. But, perhaps, America was full of such tall people. Visits to Sweden had revealed even larger individuals, but everyone knew that the water was magically inclined to overly large Muggles in that country. It was quite common knowledge.

Eating a small bar of chocolate, and avoiding the small cluster of multicolored dextrosey Pixie Walking Sticks in her lap, Luna was more interested in inspecting the clouds above than watching for any approaching persons. The obscured sky was easier to contemplate than some subjects that she would rather avoid her mind lighting upon.

Nightmares of a dungeon, Confoundus Charms, what porcupine pudding tasted of...

Sam rolled his eyes at Dean and Dean wanted to say something but he bit his tongue. It wasn't going to do anyone good if they started bickering like they used to when they were kids. Dad had said they sounded like a married couple the few times he'd actually been around to hear them go at it. That wasn't amusing back when they were kids but he almost relished the thought of spouting that tidbit in front of Luna.

"Luna," he asked, instead of goading his brother. "Did we ever discuss what orange pixie sticks taste of over the journals? It didn't look like you had any so we'll probably have to guess." He took another pixie stick from his pocket, a yellow one, and handed it over his shoulder to Sam in an off-handed way. "Here, Sammy, you could use some sweetening up."

Dean was highly amused as he listened to Luna describe the stars she knew. It reminded him of long nights in the passenger seat of the Impala, gazing out at the stars as Dad drove and Sam snored in the back seat. He'd memorized the sky enough to know that Luna had meant "Ursa" and not "Leo" but he wasn't about to correct her. It didn't seem to be necessary anyway since he couldn't even pinpoint the Big Dipper up there in that foreign sky. Of course, that could've just been the fact that the sky wasn't real. It might just be a projection of some sort. They controlled the weather, why not the appearance of the sky?

He watched the side of Luna's face as she spoke about the stars and found himself completely taken in by her again. There was this purity and sweetness to her that he found himself entirely attracted to in a way he'd never been attracted to a girl before. He wasn't waiting for the right moment to try to talk himself into her pants. No, he was waiting for the right moment to crack a joke to see her smile like that again at him. He had no intention of taking advantage of her other than to spend as much time as he could in the seeming aura of optimism and peace.

"I do not believe we did." Fairly sure that orange Sticks of Pixies tasted of orange fruits, she nonetheless had an open mind on the topic. Looking down to her lap, she pushed a few aside until she found three orange tubules there. Picking them up, she held one out to each of the men to her side. "We could compare?"

The funny thing was, Luna would not have been surprised to be corrected, it was a common argument when she pointed out what she saw. The Muggle's "Ursa" was supposed to look like the side of a bear, but their "Leo," well if you turned your head and widened your perspective, you could see the face of a black bear

Silence fell for a second, only to be bolstered right back into speech by Sam's question. "When I was little," she chose to answer with the reasoning in a story, rather than with a bulkier truth that would not explain anyway. "My mum used to bundle me up and take me outside, to our clearing in the woods. And I would sit on her lap as she showed me the stars, we would find our own pictures in the night sky." Despite the fact that the memories were relatively old, they were still quite clear, despite her use of them as comfort. "After she died, I would go out on my own, trace over the old pictures."

There was really nothing sad in her tone as she spoke of her mother, although she missed the other witch, there was nothing to be sad about when remembering her. Dropping her gaze momentarily from the sky overhead, to look at each of the Winchesters, "Look we can make new ones, while we stay here." Out of habit, she said 'stay' rather than 'are held.' Wide blue eyes went back to the stars, and she reached one hand up, tracing a new pattern. "I see...a badger in a bad hat. Just there. What do you see?"

Sam stared at the extended pixie stick over Dean's shoulder and then grabbed it, fighting the urge to shove his brother's shoulder in the process. Leave it to Dean to suddenly make Sam feel like he's a chubby twelve year old cramping his style.

He softened his glare at the back of Dean's head into a small smile as Luna handed him an orange pixie stick. "Uh, thanks," Sam said, taking it and setting both of them on the step beside him.

Sam leaned forward slightly to look at Luna as she spoke, listening carefully to her story. He thought the fact that Luna's mother used to take her into the woods when she was younger probably attested for her fearlessness in going into them alone. He also felt a pang of sympathy when she indicated that her mother had passed away. For a second he wondered if that was what everyone here at Vas had in common. That they'd lost a mother somewhere along the way, but he quickly pushed it aside as being unlikely.

Sam nodded at her as she glanced at him and then followed her gaze back up to the sky. He squinted up, not quite seeing the same thing Luna's imagination did. In fact, he found his imagination lacking as he stared at the sky. He cleared his throat. Wondering if this game was as subjective as the cloud game he used to play on long car rides when he was a kid. The moment drug out and Sam silently forfeited to Dean, busying himself with draining his beer and reaching for another.
