What: Having a side conversation. Continued from here.
When: Day 1 - 10:45am
Where: Mickey's Diner
Rating: R
Status: Complete

Apocalypse. Angels. Antichrist. Nothing that Dean had said over the journals or now in person was making any sense to Sam. That combined with the fact that his brother looked way more worn and beaten down than Sam had ever seen made Sam wonder if there was something really wrong. Plus, Dean had more than enough sense not to be spouting words like antichrist around a bunch of strangers that had woken up in the same deserted town that they had. One of the first rules of hunting was not singling yourself out and as far as he could tell Dean had been doing just that. Just because they knew the Yellow Eyed Demon wasn't behind this didn't mean that Lilith wasn't. For all they knew, she'd stuck them here so that they wouldn't be able to find a way out of Dean's deal.

Not that there weren't other possibilities. Who was this Castiel person and how did he know the Trickster? The Trickster could bend reality, but did it have the power to pull people from different times? It didn't make any sense. Neither did the fact that there were people here that knew them. People that he didn't remember meeting and knew things about Sam that he wouldn't have ordinarily shared with anyone else. They needed to get to the bottom of this and then get out. So why Dean was suddenly acting like a mental case was beyond him.

As he pulled him towards a back booth and away from the small gathering of people he studied his brother's movements and eyes. He was moving fine and his pupils weren't dilated, so it wasn't a concussion or drugs. He released his arm only when they got to the back of the diner. "Dean, what the hell is going on?" Sam asked, studying his face. "What antichrist incident? What are you talking about? We just buried Doc Benton less than a day ago." He had to bite his tongue not to mention that they also might have buried Dean's only chance to escape the deal. "And why are you suddenly in biblical mode? Angels, apocalypse, antichrist? All you need is a bell and a sandwich board that says 'The End is Near'."

At the moment, Castiel did not have the patience to debate with Sam. He had learned from past experience that Sam Winchester had the capacity to be exceptionally tenacious. "Dean's right, Sam. Knowing your future could only impede important events."

Part of him disliked assuring Sam that his tumultuous future was the right one. He wasn't even sure himself. His second thoughts appeared in a sidelong glance to Dean. It was always better to play it safe with temporal displacement.

Dean's reply managed to shock Sam into silence for a long moment. If he knew about the things he'd put him through... Sam's mouth went dry at the implications behind that statement. One of his biggest fears had long been what he was capable of. He'd fought against the Yellow Eyed Demon, even died because he'd refused to give in, but that didn't mean that there weren't times when he thought there might still be some kind of monster inside of him. His dad wouldn't have given Dean that order if he didn't think it was a real concern. He turned blankly towards Castiel and stared at him as he spoke.

"Bullshit," he said after a long moment, though his voice sounded slightly unsure. "What did I do?" Sam asked, his eyes traveling over the two men. He could feel guilt for unknown wrongs knotting up his stomach already. "If it's bad, then I should...impede it." He looked at Dean. "I can change it. I will change it. I can fix it. Just tell me."

Dean stared at his brother for a moment as he tried to put his thoughts together. This wasn't his first time dealing with this time travel shit and no matter how hard he had tried to change the past it didn't do any good. Well...he stopped them from having to grow up in a hippie van so he guessed it did a little good. He gave a side glance to Cas, unsure of what the hell to do.

Ok, he could do this...just keep it vague-ish and maybe he could save his brother and him a lot of pain. "Don't trust Ruby," his eyes never left his brother's, hoping to convey how insanely important this was. "She's not on our side."

"She's a demon," Castiel knowingly stated the obvious. "And no matter what she may say, she is devoted to Lucifer." If Dean was going to tell Sam the truth, he would support him.

Though he was yet to know what "spoilers" meant, Castiel was certain that Dean would do everything in his power to keep Sam safe from the truth.

Sam felt sick. Whatever he'd done, it was bad enough that Dean wasn't going to tell him. Somewhere down the line he'd trusted Ruby. But why? She obviously hadn't managed to save Dean. Why would he trust her after she'd told him she could?

Castiel's choice of words touched off a connection and his forehead wrinkled. "Does Ruby have something to do with the apocalypse?" Sam asked, not believing that he could've been so wrong about a demon he'd started to think of as an ally in saving Dean. Lilith he could believe playing some kind of part in the "end game" as Dean had called it, but Ruby? She didn't seem powerful enough. Even with her knife, the spells and her take no prisoners attitude, he couldn't see her kicking off an apocalypse. She was just like the other demon's they'd come across. Except that Sam had believed her when she'd said she was on their side.
