Who: Ianto Jones and Shannon Rutherford What: Checking in When: Day 30, late afternoon Where: The Gym Rating: PG Status: Active
Hospitals had freaked Shannon out for years. Her mother had died in one. Her father had died in one. Boone had died in a makeshift one on the Island. In short, hospitals - even thrown together clinics in caves - directly equated to death for Shannon and probably always would. After the earthquake, rather than going to the gym to have one of the real doctors put stitches in her side, Shannon had opted to let Sam take a crack at it just outside the building because she hadn't been able to make herself go inside to see all of the destruction, both to the building and to the people inside it.
But now, as she stood outside, staring at the door and shifting her weight from one foot to the other uncomfortably, Shannon was trying to tell herself that she could and should go inside to visit Ianto. For one thing, she'd promised him she would. For another, Ianto wasn't the only person she'd promised the same thing. Shannon reasoned to herself that it wasn't really a hospital; there was a small clinic but the main attraction right now was the food. She tried to tell herself that there was only Ianto with an injury, so far as she could tell from the journals.
Taking a deep breath, Shannon closed her eyes, counted to three, and pushed the door open, making her way inside. It took her a moment to find Ianto on a cot in the corner and her chest tightened. From where she was standing, Shannon couldn't really see what kind of shape he was in and part of her was scared that he'd be in worse shape than he or Elliot had let on and Shannon wasn't entirely sure she was ready to find out. But, she was inside and there was no turning back now. Ianto was her friend; for once, he might need her and it was time to pay him back for all the times he'd been there when she'd needed him.
Shannon crossed the room and a moment later, was at Ianto's side, crouching down beside the cot. He didn't look as good as she'd hoped nor as bad as she'd imagined, so she let out the breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding and reached out to touch his hand. "Ianto," she said quietly. "Hey, I'm here. Do you need anything? How are you feeling?" she asked gingerly.
