Day Four - Evening
Who: Cielo & L Lawliet
What: Hunting & Noise WTFery
When: Evening, after dark
Where: The forest, to start
Rating: PG-13ish?
Status: Active

The thick drip of blood and the satisfying tear of flesh nourished him, but the aerial battle with the pair of vultures hadn't been as gratifying as he had hoped. True, the devouring did satisfy the ever-present bestial need but the birds had barely fought - it was a battle too easily won and so the taste was slightly bitter as the last feathered bit slid down his throat.

The blue-skinned demon lounged back on taloned heels for a long moment and, as he watched the last light fade from the sky, his wing-like arm raised to wipe the last of the blood from his mouth. The thought that he should return to safety occurred to him but he knew that a bit of washing up would be required if he didn't want to give away the fact that he had spent the early evening hunting raw flesh; this meant that he'd have to find the gym and, before that, a good change of warmer clothes would be nice - he really didn't want to catch cold, if it could be helped.

His human appearance restored, Cielo stood and slowly stretched. He spared the clearing where he had feasted a brief glance but there was nothing glaringly obvious to give away what had happened - and he was too new to the idea of having to cover his habits to really care if it did look like something had been killed. Shrugging mentally, Cielo began the long walk to the edge of the forest, but he stopped cold just as he came to the border.

An unnatural noise seemed to fill all his senses and Cielo found himself quite unable to move, aside from the effort it took to turn his head in the direction from which the noise had come. Eyes wide, he watched as the vague, shadowy forms of trees fell in the distance and the ground shook violently under their weight as they struck home. The noise faded almost as quickly as it had risen, but Cielo still stood at the edge of the forest, torn between the sensible idea of running for the nearest building and the foolish idea of trying to figure out just what was causing all the disturbance.

"Talents, yea, but this is something else," Cielo bobbed his head in partial agreement but he still wasn't entirely sure how common it was for someone to be able to extract that sort of information from sound alone. His doubts were tempered, though, by the fact that he had seen such feats commonly done in the Junkyard and, if this really was some sort of Nirvana, then maybe talents were amplified and far more common. "Pretty useful though, huh? You been able to place it yet?"

"Whatever it is, it's dangerous enough, but it's not really acting like it's tracking us or anything," he mused. His head turned back toward the dark maze of the forest and he stared pensively for a rather long moment. Admittedly, Cielo wasn't quite as able as Ryuzaki to pinpoint a location but he had been chased down enough to develop a sort of sense as to when he was being followed - and he couldn't sense anything from within the forest. Shrugging a little, he turned his attention back to the other. "Don't worry about me. If something happens, just run back to the town, yea? I'll prolly be just a step behind."

Cielo grinned easily through the lie - well, partial lie. It was true that he wasn't about to try anything stupidly brave but he wouldn't resist fighting if it came down it; another struggle and more fresh meat would never be unwelcome.

"It's definitely useful," L agreed, "though I won't know for a while yet where exactly this thing... or things..." he paused, thinking of revising further, before deciding. "Things. Yes... I think that there are certainly more than one," he said, with certainty. "Either that, or it moves more quickly than I can..." he flinched just then, as the sound repeated itself, closer than he had yet heard it.

"It might not be tracking us... but it's nearby..." he said quietly, his already pale face becoming ashy. He looked like running back to town was a temptation, at the very least, but he didn't really want to leave what appeared to be an ordinary teenager in danger's way. L had been a detective long enough to know that confidence, when not directly proportionate to competence, could be fatal.

"More than one?" Cielo echoed. There was now a hint of doubt in his tone and the corner of his lip turned down into something of a frown. Initially, he had felt that he at least had a chance should the single creature in the woods try to attack but if there were a pack of them - well, that would likely be a bit more difficult, even for an Asura. As if to reinforce this thought, the eerie sound again filled the air and Cielo felt his blood run both hot and cold.

"If it's nearby--" Whatever he had been about to say was lost as Cielo turned his attention back to Ryuzaki. Fear, much as the rest of the emotional spectrum, was quite new to him but the ashy tone of the other male's skin painted a story that needed no words. Shaking his head slightly, Cielo offered Ryuzaki a quick grin and a wave of his hand. "Hey, why dontcha head back to town, huh? I'll be right behind ya so there's no need to worry about it. No point in hanging around here where it's dangerous."

L's attention was fixed rigidly on Cielo now.

His own control over demonstrative emotion was incredible. L never cracked his demeanor except under the most frightening, unexpected, or dire circumstances, and this sudden realization that whatever was in the forest was almost on top of them certainly qualified. But Cielo... he hadn't even seemed to break a sweat. He even grinned and waved. Though L's grasp of social interaction was limited, he understood that such reactions were certainly not appropriate.

"It's a good idea to head back... perhaps we should walk beside each other?" L asked, wondering why Cielo had phrased the suggestion the way he had. Who would volunteer to stay behind?

That turn of rigid attention made Cielo acutely uncomfortable in a very short amount of time. A foolish grin seemed to paste itself on his lips and he could feel a rush of heat suddenly rise to his face. An unpleasant twisting in his stomach caused him to shift his weight from foot to foot and he raised a hand to scratch idly at his cheek.

"Yea, that's probably a good idea," he finally found himself unable not to agree with Ryuzaki - since doing anything else would probably only make Cielo seem all the more odd to the observant young man. He cast another glance over his shoulder at the forest but it was only a brief second before he returned his attention to the other. "We should probably be going, right? Safer in a group and all of that..."

Many questions were swirling through L's mind at the moment. In particular, he wondered if Cielo was different in other ways besides coming from another world. L's intuition seldom failed him, and while it was far from a sixth sense, it told him that something about Cielo was off.

"It's much safer in a group..." L said, fighting back his own fear for the moment as his curiosity started to get the better of him. "I don't believe I know your name," he added softly, after a moment. "I am called Ryuzaki." he started to walk, keeping his pace brisk but hanging back enough for Cielo to follow with ease.

Cielo hadn't spent enough time around (regular, normal) people to be sensitive to what was going on behind certain expressions but he did find himself growing a bit uncomfortable with how the other young man was observing him. Normally, in a situation where he was uncertain, he'd just try to crack a joke or do something else silly in order to break the tension of the moment but he wasn't even sure doing that was a good idea around this particular guy.

"Wouldn't want to be caught alone with whatever's making that noise, yea?" Cielo agreed with a slight nod. He easily fell into step at Ryuzaki's side and he kept the pace, neither pushing faster nor slower. "Oh, I'm Cielo. I prolly should've said that sooner, huh?"

It was probably a good thing, that Cielo was more cautious around L. Paranoid, skittish and with an underdeveloped sense of humor, he was not the most patient soul when it came to joking around. He viewed such behavior as an individual's way of showing that they weren't realizing the gravity of a situation. It was true that L was watching Cielo very closely, and that anyone would probably be uncomfortable under his unapologetic stare.

"Certainly not," L agreed smoothly, after a moment. As they walked, L found himself taking longer strides, as if encouraging the other to also quicken his pace to get away from the sound faster. It was close enough that L's sense of danger was heightened significantly, and, unlike Cielo, L happened to be nothing more or less than a human. A smart human, but a human nonetheless.

"Cielo... I do not recognize the language of origin, of that name. Italian...?" L guessed, but doubtfully.

Though he was curious as to the origins of the strange noises in the forest and though he was naive on many counts in this strange place, Cielo did know (or was able to intuit) enough to realize that revealing any lingering interest in whatever dangerous beasts might be in the forest would be revealing a bit too much of himself; though he had only met a handful of people thus far, Cielo had come to the quick conclusion that he was likely the only of his type in this strange excuse for Nirvana and so he felt the sudden need to protect his secret at least until he knew that it wouldn't lead to undue violence.

"Italian?" Cielo echoed meaninglessly. The word and its meaning were rather lost on him but he was able to follow the general gist of the question. He matched the slightly quicker pace with a natural ease as he cocked his head back slightly. "I dunno. Something like that? I think it means sky or something..."

It hit L like a ton of bricks. "Ah... Spanish... Cielo... sky." he said quietly. "I understand. It makes sense, now." he wanted to inquire if the young man was Spanish, but somehow, it seemed counter-intuitive. Since he was likely from a completely alternate reality to L's own, it probably wouldn't be particularly productive to reference other countries in the world L knew.

"I think we're in the clear," L said quietly, the sound having faded away. "What do you think? Is it too presumptuous to assume that we are safe, or...?" he had to be careful, he realized. He had to interact with Cielo as a person and not as a case study.

"I dunno if it really is Spanish," Cielo admitted with a slight shrug. Something told him that was the most likely answer and he had simply accepted it as fact; for all he knew, his name had some odd origin of which he'd never heard. "Don't really know much about Spain either so I guess your guess is as good as mine?"

"Huh? I think--" He paused a moment to glance over his shoulder, back in the direction of the noise, but he couldn't sense anything dangerous approaching. It was a good guess that whatever was making the noise wouldn't leave the border of the woods but, even if it did, Cielo assumed that it wouldn't be too big of a deal. "Yea, I think we'll be alright. What about you? What do you think?"

It puzzled L that someone could be so clueless about not only the origins of his name, but a very well-known European country. Weren't things like that common knowledge of the most easy-to-access brand? But L withheld his judgment for the moment, realizing that Cielo probably came from a world where there was no Spain. He would later reason out how it was possible for someone like that to have a Spanish name with the exact same meaning as the word in that language, but for now he would focus on the situation at hand.

L thought for a moment. The young man's confidence.... there was something infectious about it. He seemed so unruffled, so unworried, that L found himself relaxing. "Yes..." he agreed, finally, his glance lingering suspiciously on Cielo. "As long as you're sure. I think that I'll go back to the drug store, now... where are you staying?"

The fact that Cielo knew that he had a Spanish name without knowing of Spain was easily chalked up as another oddity. He had run into quite a few of those ever since his emotions had awakened and, though they did confuse him, he found that thinking about them too much just made it worse. Realizations and insights would come and go and, eventually, he would probably be able to piece everything together well enough. Until then, it was just another interesting part of life.

His head still turned, Cielo continued to watch the forest curiously but there still didn't appear to be anything for him to sense - well, anything beyond the beasts and other expected things. He drew a deep breath, tasting the air, but there was nothing. "Nah, I think we're good. It sould be all clear to get back to where you belong," he agreed cheerfully. "I've been staying up in the clocktower but I dunno how long I'll be there."
