Day Four - Late Morning
Who: Sam Winchester & Luna Lovegood
What: Investigating
When: Late Morning
Where: The woods near the church/graveyard
Rating: PG-13
Status: Complete

Sam wasn't sure, but he thought that the sky looked like it was working towards more rain. He moved a little faster through the graveyard, looking for any newly dug graves or overturned earth. He'd left Dean behind at the museum with Shannon, not entirely sure what had been done to his brother or if the amnesia was temporary or permanent. As much as he'd thought about how much better he'd feel if Dean was there with him, he'd never imagined that it would be a Dean who didn't remember who he was or who Sam was. This version of Dean only made him miss his usual take charge brother even more.

With Dean somewhat incapacitated, Sam wasn't sure whether or not his instincts or reflexes would be fast enough in his current state, he'd had taken it upon himself to try to find the person or thing behind the body of the murdered woman in the woods. He didn't really trust anyone else to go with him, afraid that they might slow him down or get in the way. He'd combed the journals for the exact location of the body but had been unable to find it, though he did think it was odd that the newcomer, Rorschach, seemed hesitant about telling anyone else where the body was buried. He'd decided to start near the cemetery, thinking that if someone were to bury someone that might be their first stop, at least if they had any religious leanings, but once he got there he caught sight of Roschach's handwriting saying that the grave had been in the woods and unmarked.

He stopped at the edge of the cemetery gates and stared out into the woods. He didn't have any weapon except for the hunting knife he'd gained when he and Luna had taken out the wolves. He hadn't even really told Shannon or Dean about his plans, afraid that one or both of them might have some objections to it despite the fact that he needed a case to wrap his mind around, a puzzle to work out so that he could take his mind of his current situation. Normally he wouldn't think about going into the woods without some kind of backup, but without Dean he didn't really have a choice. He sighed heavily, kneeling down and taking the knife out of it's hiding place in his sock before straightening up and moving towards the woods. Twenty minutes in he thought he'd caught the trail of someone. He followed the footsteps and broken twigs to a small clearing with dense foliage and the dim silhouette of a woman sitting on an overturned log. He paused, thinking he recognized the humming.

"Luna?" He asked, moving forward. "What are you doing out here?"

Sam glanced upwards as Luna did, wondering what she was seeing that he didn't. He lowered his gaze before she did, looking around the clearing and spotting the deer as it moved behind a tree. He couldn't remember seeing any deer, though admittedly he'd been distracted both times prior he'd been in the woods.

He looked over at Luna as she began to talk, the corners of his mouth moving into a small frown. He hadn't really expected for Luna to say that, though he could see how it would be confusing. He tried to picture Andy telling Luna, who he'd very clearly been crushing on, that he just wanted to be friends after kissing her. It was true that Sam didn't know Andy that well. Still, he hadn't gotten the impression that was exactly Andy's style. If anything it would've been easier to accept if Andy had moved in for a kiss and Luna had played the "let's be friends" card.

He sighed and looked down at the grass at his feet. He felt like he should say something, but he didn't understand Andy's actions any more than Luna did. "Sometimes guys do stupid things," Sam said, after a long moment, squinting a little as he focused his attention back on the deer in front of them.

It was a good thing that Luna no longer slept on her back, waking to find stone above her would not do her any good. Although the clouds obscured any sight of sun and the blue reflection of blue, it was still comforting to feel as if the sky was within reach. Upon moving into her own flat, she had spent quite a bit of time working on charms on the ceiling of her bedroom to imitate the night sky.

If Sam had been surprised by what she told him of what happened, she had been even more surprised by it happening to her. Unknowing that it had all been a massive misunderstanding, with a cultural gap that never seemed to be notice until it cropped up to bite at them like angry grindylows.

Every time that she thought she understood what Andy was saying, or where he was coming from (so to speak), something confused her. Whether it was suddenly grimacing while looking at her, or speaking strangely. How was she supposed to understand when he made it all convoluted. Unfortunately, Sam did not seem able to translate his actions any more than she had, leaving her still at a loss.

The deer ahead of them bent its head to nibble on the blades of grass at its feet, only to startle at a sudden and odd flurry of sounds from deeper in the forest. "Uh oh."

There was a long moment of silence and Sam wondered if Luna had expected him to say something else. He knew it hadn't exactly been much, or even really that encouraging, but given the situation he wasn't sure what else he could've said.

He turned back towards Luna, trying to read her expression when he heard the echo of something around them. He froze, listening to the far off sound and trying to figure out what was going on. Suddenly his first instinct to get Luna back to safety with the others didn't seem like a bad idea at all.

Sam's eyes scanned the edge of the forest, watching the deer as it disappeared. "Doesn't exactly sound like wolves this time," he said, keeping his voice low as he gave Luna a sideways glance.

No, Sam had not been very helpful in clarifying or encouraging anything. But being there and even offering an opinion was more than she was used to. This all seemed to be something she would have to figure out on her own, which she had been expecting in any case. Even if it was very difficult to even think of wrapping her head around.

Part of her wanted to go and see what was making the noises, and it took her to her feet, peering into the darkness of the trees on the other side of the small clearing. The more sensible part of her, and yes, it did exist, kept her where she was. Standing at Sam's side and not moving towards the source of the sudden disruption in the peace of the woods.

"No," she spoke softly back, imitating his low tone. "I do not think it is wolves at all." The deer likely had the right idea, "It's not safe here anymore."

Sam got to his feet when Luna did, a hand ready to reach out and pull her back when she looked like she was going to start moving in the direction of the noise.

She seemed to still though, her eyes looking into the darkness of the trees and he was surprised to find that she didn't seem scared so much as curious and cautious.

"No," Sam agreed, taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly. "Let's get back to the others."

Creatures in the woods were often either harmless or ones that you tamped down any fear that sprung up so that they could not smell it. Many things were the same way, you focused on controlling any fear, and it made you stronger for it.

Sam's hand was out, she saw when she looked over at him, and not understanding that he had not meant it the way she saw it, she put her hand in his. "Okay."

Sam raised his eyebrows at Luna's hand slipping into his. He paused for a second and then squeezed her hand lightly. "Okay."

He gave her a small smile and then started moving back the way he'd come, his other hand moving to retrieve the knife where he'd put it away earlier as they went.
