The modulator was mostly done. Cannibalized batteries had been linked together in a long chain. From the Doctor's best guess he could manage 50 bursts from them if he was lucky, 30 if he wasn't. That was a very limited testing phase, and that fact made the Time Lord very particular in how he tested his new machine. Moving it was a chore - it weighed nearly fifty pounds. Long, round and skinny, the damned thing was cumbersome with wires hanging off it - making it so the Doctor had to be very careful as he shifted it.

"Testing! Testing! In 3 - 2- 1--!" He called. He was alone in the church, but he still felt like he ought to be careful. That he should at least warn anybody in earshot that he could, in theory, blow out their ear drums. His ear drums? Well, that was a chance he was willing to take. Besides, unless the modulator backfired, he was behind the sound pulse and waves didn't typically travel backward.

Pressing down the button the machine propped on the Time Lord's hip began to hum rather dramatically and he looked at it with a concerned expression. He could feel the tube heating up against him. The Doctor winced as the pulse finally went off with a squeal and a boom, it's force shaking the wooden structure in front of him. The frequency, of course, hadn't been set for wood - no, it was for glass. But, at least now he knew the damned thing turned on. Forty-something more tests to go.

The Doctor couldn't help it, he was pleased with himself, and it showed on his expression.

"Non." He purred the word out with a smile, leaning in closer so that he could speak it nearer to the Time Lord's ear. "Been real goo'. Hopin' San'a's wa'chin' an' gonna gimme lossa gif's 'dis year." A light tease, but at least it was true, he had been a good boy to the best of his ability. Which wasn't saying much.. "Y' g'wan insi'e ye'? Ma'e us 'de be'. T'ough' you coul' use uh goo' nigh's sleep. Pu' 'de couches in 'de office." And he'd made a nice little bed, filled with linens from the thrift store.. he loved how everything had simply shown back up there. "Aire' i' ou', even.. so don' smell so much like mol'." And he was proud of that, they didn't smell nearly as much as they had. "Move 'de desk, so you can still use i', you wan' to." He'd pushed it into the corner, with the little rickety, chair.. he'd made a rather comfortable little bedroom.

"Y'wan' I shoul' carry 'dat back insi'e f' you?" He'd seen the way you'd strained a little in putting it down. Fifty pounds was light for the Cajun, but he understood that it was heavier for the brunette in front of him. "Don' wan' ya strainin' uh muscle." Now that was a tease and came with a grin. Yeah, he was calling you a lightweight, Doctor.. and his eyes were straying to the angry bruise his elbow had left along your jaw. It looked like it hurt. A lot.

There were quite a few other bruises on the Time Lord that were conveniently hidden beneath his blue suit. They all hurt. They all reminded him that he was still quite damaged goods. Especially that one that ran around just below his ribs. That one was the worst.

The Doctor wasn't too eager to go back inside. No, that cell that had sprung up overnight was not something he could easily ignore. With it's beds and the way all the door needed was a lock -- well, it made him highly uncomfortable.

"It's alright, really. Think I'd rather just stay out here for a while," He was taking a few steps back and finding a spot to sit on a headstone. He noticed the way the Cajun looked at the bruise on his cheek and he turned his head as if to hide it.

"Think they're trying to tell me something?" He asked, holding out his hand and the big black letter "I" on it.

"Oui? Didn' like 'de real kinky cage I pu' in 'dere?" It was a joke, of course, that clearly hadn't been appreciated, and he regretted it as soon as it came out of his mouth. He'd seen it. He'd gone inside, he'd looked over the beds, he'd sat on one, and he'd stared at the door. When it hadn't slammed shut, he'd been much less scared of it and had sauntered out. Still, it gave him the creeps to look at it, being locked in a little cage, but he knew it wasn't some sort of trap right now.

Maybe later.

"Coul' take care o' i', you wan'." He could blow it up. He could cut it into little pieces and remove it piece by piece.. but blowing it up would damage their house, and he was sure that if he cut it up using that built-in-blow torch of his, that it'd just come right back hours later. As soon as they weren't looking. But he'd be happy to do it.

He was slowly following the Doctor over to the tombstone, and when he lifted his hand to show the letter "I" there, Remy held out his own hand, displaying the black glove. Undisturbed all night, as he'd slept with them on. He hadn't taken them off since the Doctor had.. well. Not since that day. Maybe it was a punishment for the Time Lord, maybe it was protection for the Mutant. Or maybe he was trying to keep the brunette safe from him.. whatever it was, they hadn't come off. "None f' me. T'ink 'de ot'ers go' 'dem?"

The Doctor's expression was deadpan to the joke. He didn't like joking about things in this place anymore. Well, unless they were stupid tattoos. Or, well, otherwise harmless happenings. The cage was not a tattoo, and that brilliant brain of his was telling him that the cage wouldn't be harmless for long.

He was uncomfortable, perhaps visibly so, when the mutant followed him in the direction of the headstone. Something had been shaken, at least for him, between them. That fundamental trust, that he'd never do anything to hurt the other man was lost. He had done something to hurt him. He'd tried to and he couldn't stop. Now, when he looked at Remy it came in a thick, terrible, sinking feeling that maybe he couldn't even trust himself here.

"Looks that way. Notes have been popping up in the journals all morning with people speculating about them." Brown eyes fell to those gloves. "Have you checked?" He asked quietly.

"Non.." He was looking down at his gloved left hand, the same one that the Doctor had the marking on, turning it over and inspecting it slowly, before that other hand was coming out to undo the singular button and release the tight grip it had on his flesh. With a few slow tugs, and some anticipation, he was removing it and flexing his fingers, then turning it palm-down so he could see the back of his hand. A little breath escaped. No mark. No number. No letter. No stripes. Nothing. He pushed up his sleeve to look there for good measure, then lifted black and red eyes up to brown with a smile.

"Not'in'. Maybe 'dey jus' remin'in' you how grea' you are." The red-head was stepping in closer, shoving that glove into his back pocket, but he left the other one on. It'd be up to you to get that second glove off, Doctor.. at least suggest it, remind him, he'd take it off for you if you asked it of him.

There was a sense of relief when he saw that bare flesh. No mark. No letter. Nothing. He watched as those fingers flexed and stretched - the marks where the constricting glove had been were very clearly visible, running like little red wrinkles where seams and creases had been in the leather.

"As if I need reminding," he said lowly with a smirk.

He looked to the other glove, making no motion to take that hand himself. "Humor me," brown eyes meeting up with red ones in that request.

When the Doctor requested that he take off that other glove, Remy looked up again and smiled a little, stepping in half a step closer so he could lift his hand, palm up and button exposed, to the much older man. "G'wan." He was trying to help you, he really was. Maybe this, this show of trust between Cajun and Time Lord would help. You could take his glove off, Doctor.

He wanted you to.

Wordlessly he'd take the gloved hand, hanging there with his eyes on it rather than the Cajun's face. He was uncomfortable. Absolutely, positively, 100% uncomfortable as he had that appendage between his hands. He'd undo the button and carefully tug at the leather. He'd done this so many times before now that there wasn't any rational reason for him to be nervous or uncomfortable about it. Except he was.

Bare skin to the air, the Doctor turned Remy's palm over, looking to the back of his hand where he saw the black letter and he couldn't help but sigh. "Just like everyone else," he affirmed, leaving go and holding onto the glove instead.

Remy let out a slow breath when he saw the letter on the back of his hand. "F." He spoke slowly, before his lips curled up into a grin. "Guess 'dat means I fail, non? Ain' use' t' no' gettin' wha' I wan'. Gonna hafta try har'er nex' time, non?" He asked in a chiming tone, body swaying a little to the side in a deliberate motion, to earn the Time Lord's attention on him. It was wrong of him, really, to use his blatant sexuality to get things he wanted.. but he had since he was a boy. He wasn't about to stop now.

Then that unmarked hand was coming down to catch the Time Lord's empty one and hold onto it, fingers lacing. "I take 'de cage apar' when I go back insi'e nex', d'accord? Ain' gonna leave i' up in 'dere." Not if it so clearly made the Doctor uncomfortable.. though, it could have been himself making him uncomfortable, and not that cage.

"Or, theres two a's, an n, two t's, an s, and i and a c out there and when we all come together we spell fantastic." See, silly body art, perfect for making a joke about/. Time Lord's attention, despite outward appearances had not been off of the Cajun since he'd turned up. No need to sway and flaunt, Remy, you had his mind set on you.

He let his hand be taken up, just for a few moments before squeezing and pulling it back away with a small smile. "No, no need for that," he said quietly. In truth, he was hoping they'd be ready to try and get out soon.

"How's that vampire friend of yours doing with all this sunshine?"

He'd try and pull away, but as he was pulling back, Remy's hand went with him. No shaking free. Not yet. he was holding on. He wasn't done with you yet, Time Lord. "She ain' doin' ba'.. tol' me 'bou' 'de lil' boy bein' uh werewolf. Ha' guesse', bu' didn' know f' sure 'til I kin'a tricke' her int' tellin' me." Sly Cajun that he was. Con man. Thief. Master thief he reminded himself with a slight smile.

"Y'know.. she ain' go' not pro'ems wit' 'de sunligh'.. an' she gonna live f'ever." Were you following him on this same thought, Doctor? He could live forever, like you. And the way he swayed in again and bumped hips was enough to say that he'd considered it and that he was willing to do it. Was it scary for you, Time Lord? To think he might do that, for you?

"Vampires, werewolves, zombies.. What's next, ghosts? Goblins? How about a leprechaun?" The Doctor wasn't shaking the hand off, just letting it follow as the other was so good at doing.

"That's interesting," Time Lord brushed off the comments of no adverse reaction to the sun and the mention of immortality. "Aside from killing people, consuming their blood no less, I'd guess she hasn't got any drawbacks." He sounded sarcastic, and it was unusual to be so blatant about his sarcasm. It hadn't even crossed his mind that was something the Cajun was considering as a lifestyle choice. No, that would be just stupid.

"I should see Rose," he said quietly. John had been sent back to a lukewarm memory. He hadn't talked to anyone else about it. Not even Nine. No, he wanted to talk to Rose and only Rose about his experience following the Satan Pit.

"Le's hope 'dere ain' no ghos's. Go' 'nuff o 'dem wit'ou' 'de real kin' flyin' 'roun' here." It wasn't an appealing idea.. there wasn't any telling who could show up for him if they were including the dead. Likely Logan, they liked torturing him with Logan.

When he shot down the idea of living forever so easily, the Cajun sighed some. Okay, maybe he was right, it was sort of silly, wasn't it? But then he was mentioning Rose and the red-head swayed again, an unconscious reaction to the girl's name. Notice him, Doctor. You didn't need to be thinking about her, you needed to be thinking about him.

Always about him.

"Ain' seen her in uh few days?" He questioned at last, keeping that smooth smile on his face. Don't read into it too hard, Doctor.

Had the Doctor known that all he had to do was not mention something and suddenly the Cajun would be giving up the thought, he'd have stopped mentioning a lot of things quite a while ago.

"Haven't seen her for a quite a while, not since before.." Before they took him. Had you realized he hadn't hardly even spoke to her since he'd been dropped back here Remy? "Wouldn't want her to think she's done something... Or, that I'm not sorry..." Did Rose Tyler even think about the stupid things he'd done anymore? It'd only been a few days, but in this place days might as well have been months. Things moved so fast and changed. It made for fast and brightly burning relationships and some ills to be forgotten a bit faster than they may have been elsewhere.

Thin-framed man was pushing up to stand, this time he was pulling his hand away. He wanted to talk to Rose. No, he needed to. After it'd been rubbed in his face how stupid he'd been so long ago. He knew how she felt then as clearly as he had in experiencing it all again; yet, he hadn't done anything. Hadn't said anything. He just wanted to apologize to her for that, even if he knew it wouldn't mean anything.

He'd shove his hands into his pockets and give the Cajun the best imitation of a bright smile he could manage. It'd be a few beats before he was leaning forward, pressing a chaste kiss to the Cajun's cheek.

Of course he was thinking about you.

He nodded when the Doctor said he had to go talk to her. Of course he did. He may not have spent much time with Rose Tyler, but the red-head knew he spent all of his spare time thinking about her. Of course he did. He loved her. And when that hand was pulled away, Remy was taking back that glove, and moving to pull them both properly onto his hands again, though he paused when the kiss came, and a bit of a wider smile touched his lips.

"Y' ain' gonna gimme cooties y' kiss me on 'de mout'." He reminded, but wouldn't lean in to steal a kiss of his own. No, he'd let the Doctor do that in his own time, proper-like. He didn't want to rush anything and scare him off (or scare himself). "G'wan an' talk wit' her. M' gonna take 'dat cage 'par'. Won' be 'dere when y' ge' back." It was a promise of sorts. He'd take care of you, Time Lord. Anything you needed, if it was within his power, he'd take care of it. You didn't have to worry about things as much anymore, you knew you had him at your back. Right? Right.

There wasn't any love lost for those gloves as they were pulled back on and brown eyes just absorbed as the Cajun's hands were taken away again. Of course he didn't make a move to stop the damned glove. No, he'd just watch and the wheels would be turning quite visibly in his head.

"I know," he replied firmly enough, turning away from the Cajun as he mentioned the cage was coming down. "Just don't be surprised when they just put it back up again tomorrow." He looked back to shrug. "We all know how they work by now."

He was walking away again, pausing just a moment at the gate. "See you soon," he'd wave, even. Not even ten feet apart and he waved, leaving that modulator on the ground. Wasn't like he was going to lug it off to go find Rose.

"Den I'll jus' take 'de damn t'in' down 'gain t'morrow." He promised with a smile, taking one step after the Time Lord, but then he was pausing at the gate and waving back at him, and the Cajun stopped. Don't follow him. Don't. Stop it-- don't move. Stay.

Good boy. A smile was returned and he lifted a gloved hand to wiggle his fingers in return, and he allowed the Doctor to leave.. then he was bending to pick up that modular and take it back inside. With it set aside safely on the altar, the Cajun was stepping forward to press a bare pointer finger against one of the bars near the top of the cage. He'd cut it apart in sections, bit by bit, and throw them outside. The beds could stay, he'd use the mattresses.
