Day 25, Early Afternoon
Who: Sam Winchester and L
What: Coming back to Vas
Where: Pharmacy
When: Early Afternoon
Rating: PG
Status: Active

Sam had been afraid to fall asleep, but he must have drifted off somewhere between the late night infomercials and the soft sound of Dean's snoring in the bed over. A large chunk of the time had been spent watching football with Dean and then later, after they'd depleted their supply of eggnog, remembering things about their dad. Sam hadn't tried to explain the glass cage to Dean again, especially after a little research he'd found Shannon and Andy listed as deceased. He wasn't sure how to explain it or them to him, he wasn't even sure if Dean was entirelely real but if this was some kind of dream he didn't want to inturrupt it with reality. He'd tried to look up the other names he knew from Vas, but didn't have any luck except for a phone number for one Lexie Grey in Seattle, WA. He'd called it, fueled on by curiosity, and at the sound of Lexie's voicemail he'd stammered a moment before wishing her a Merry Christmas and hanging up.

When he opened his eyes again he wasn't entirely surprised to find himself back in Vas, though his stomach still sunk at the familiar sight of the Pharmacy. He let out a shaky sigh and looked around, taking in the paved road and the sun shining above and wondered how much time had passed while he'd been gone. What had happened while he'd been gone? The experiment, or temporary escape, had been uncharacteristically light for the Management. He moved towards the Pharmacy door, needing to see a familiar Vas face and make sure that everything was okay. Or as okay as it got in this place.

He pushed open the door and glanced around. "Hello?"

L's eyes flickered upward at the unexpected voice. People didn't often bother him here, with the exception of Merope, and since yesterday, he was feeling somewhat uncertain about his circumstances. Surely, it was wrong to sleep with someone just because they were willing to. He was torn between remembering it as an act of supreme kindness, and being grateful, and regretting it entirely. Of course, he was only returning to thinking about it now because he had been returned to Vas, somewhat to his disappointment, and he now had to deal with this set of problems instead of the now-familiar Kira case.

He had tried to change the way things had gone with the case, and if the usually receptive Watari had listened to his prophetic information, it would have been wonderful. Kira would have been caught that very afternoon, a second Kira might never have arisen, and many deaths could have been prevented. However, Watari had treated him with gentle dismissal, saying that he'd worked himself too hard and was essentially speaking insanity or nonsense. Nothing hurt more, to L's logical mind. However, it had come as a stern reminder that it was unwise to let emotions get in the way of his objectives. Solving the enigma that was Vas was becoming more than an objective, now... with so many losing hope and faltering, L was starting to see it as destiny.

L recognized Sam from one of the days the sun had not risen and the dead had walked the earth. He tilted his head, regarding the other man shrewdly. "Was everyone gone, this morning, or was it just me?"

Sam spotted L a moment after he called out hello and gave a small sigh of relief. Though seeing L reminded him of also first seeing the zombie version of Dean, he could cancel out the thought with the new memory of seeing Dean alive and well in the future.

"I was placed elsewhere this morning too," Sam said, raising his eyebrows. "I don't know about everyone else." He paused, wondering where L might have been sent. "Maybe they needed us out of the way for the renovations."

Sam moved further inside the shop. "Are you okay?"

L bristled defensively as Sam came closer, looking skittish and suspicious despite the fact that, ultimately, they had helped each other with the Dean situation. He glanced downward apologetically following his initial reaction, aware that it could well be construed as ungrateful or rude. However, it was mutually understood, between the two, that no harm was meant from one to the other, and that they still shared a common purpose. Or, at least, as much of a purpose as one could have in a world that was constantly changing and uncertain.

"I'm fine," he said, trying not to sound too defensive. Maybe it was what had happened the day before, but his overall mannerism was that he was hiding something. "As fine as I can be after a harmless but frustrating morning. Yourself?"

Even if Sam wasn't used to reading other people's non-verbal cues it would've been easy to tell that L wasn't exactly at ease. Sam wondered what might have happened that morning to put him so on edge. Not that he knew what was normal for L. As far as he could tell from the journals L was, well could be, unpredictable.

Something about the way he said he was fine made Sam think that might not exactly be the case but he didn't want to be pressed about it. "Harmless doesn't sound so bad," Sam said, studying the other man. "Frustrating sounds like a pain, though." He paused. "My morning was good."

He gave a small huff of amusement. "I saw Dean. And it was 2007, so he's alive in the future. Well, in my future." Sam swallowed, still trying to digest this information. Dean was alive.

"Indeed," L agreed after a moment. "It was just peaceful and something I've already lived through... something that I found myself mostly bored through. Still, compared to some of what we see here, perhaps that's a good thing. Yes..." he decided, pausing to chew on his fingertip, "Definitely a good thing."

The mention of Dean increased the awkwardness. L had been with Sam when they had seen the zombie, after all. "I'm... ah... that's... nice," he said distractedly. "Do you think that if... when you get back, he will be, or...?"

Great. The fact that L had been caught off-guard and forced to recall an unpleasant experience was making him sound like an idiot. Even the fact that he was caught off-guard annoyed him. Dean was Sam's brother, it made perfect sense that they would have seen each other.
