While the Doctor would like to say that he'd snuck away from Remy LeBeau, it was more like he'd told the mutant quite bluntly that if he didn't get time on his own he'd utterly implode. Part of it was due to embarrassment while some of it was just that he needed to get out and walk. He had the perfect excuse: Looking for a suitable place to test the modulator. He couldn't just try it on the glass anywhere; no, he needed to find a structural point where the whole damned thing wouldn't collapse in on itself.

So, he''d start with a hand drawn map and start making notations on it as to places where he thought the test would be best performed. Right now, he was just in town, sticking his nose in his journal and scowling. There were so many things on those pages that he didn't like to read - but, still he couldn't bring himself to reply. The Time Lord knew no matter what he said to the people who mattered most would know that it wasn't right. Knew he was just putting on an act. And that made him nervous.

So, he walked along, nose in that stupid book. Not his finest moment of sneaking.

No, it had not escaped Jack's attention that the Doctor had replied to everyone but him yesterday. All right, so his ego was a bit more than bruised right now. And by bruised, Jack really meant a gaping wound that someone had thrown salt and lemon juice on just to have a good old laugh. Not cool and not fair.

Then, of course, had come that conversation Ianto had with the Doctor. No, Jack hadn't been watching over Ianto's shoulder, but when his lover had growled and angrily tossed his journal aside, Jack had known there was a problem. He could count on one hand the number of times he'd seen Ianto lose his temper. Thus, Jack had seen the conversation between the two men. Right now, he wasn't sure if he should be shocked at the things Ianto said -- or if he wanted to shag the man.

Toss up, really.

Which was why Jack was wandering through the town, searching for the Doctor. Jack Harkness wanted answers and he was going to get them one way or another. Catching sight of the Doctor with his nose in the journal, he moved to stand in front of the Doctor and waited for the inevitable collision.

"Ooomph!" Went the Doctor as he was forced to walk into a man with a hell of a lot more muscle who'd been prepared for him. That wasn't fair, Jack. Bouncing off the coat-clad man like he was teflon, the Doctor looked up, straightened his specs and flattened out his expression some as the face on the obstacle was identified as his friend.

"Fancy literally running into you," the Doctor said, shoving his journal and his hands into his pockets, making move to continue on his merry way. "Mind the bugs," he called over his shoulder - not really making it all that far, just a couple of steps, really; but, wanting it to seem he'd gone further than he actually had.

May not have been fair, but it also wasn't fair for the Doctor to have been ignoring Jack as he was either. So if Jack chose to express his displeasure by waiting for him to run smack into him, so be it.

"Fancy that," Jack replied, smoothing down the lapels of his greatcoat. Jack sidestepped and turned, catching up with the other man. Sorry, but Jack wasn't about to let the Doctor get away from him that easily. "Good thing that I'm wearing stomping boots." Jack looked askance at the Doctor. "So why are you ignoring me?"

Jack Harkness: master of the subtlety.
