Who: Chris and Connor. [Other gym-natives are welcome too]
What: Even whitelighters need looking after sometimes.
Where: The oh so popular gym.
When: Day 23 - Morning, maybe 8ish?
Rating: PG-13 tentatively.
Status: Active.

His will was strong, at least generally it was, but the magical hybrid had never had to deal with anything like this before. It may have sounded silly or unbelievable to anyone else, but Chris had never been sick before. When your father was a literal angel from Heaven with the power to heal almost anything, sickness and injury weren't really a problem. Of course, that had only been until the state of the world began to turn for the worst and the needs of a child became less important than the needs of the many. By then he was old enough to know how to keep himself healthy. But all the same, Chris had never experienced anything like this before, not even any of the several times he had been poisoned.

He was heeding Rose's words though. He didn't leave the gym, despite how badly he wanted to take Piper's body from this place before anyone else could see her (or what was left of her) and bury her. Perhaps it was partly the delirium from the fever that made him think he could manage to orb even a small distance without passing out, let alone orb someone else as well. But Chris had realized he didn't have the strength or ability at the moment to do much heavy labor, so he had turned to the first person he had chosen to trust in this crazy place, the one person he swore to himself he would look after and protect just as he would any charge back on earth. Really, it was just as well Rose had caught him and forced him to stay. And he would, so long as his magic didn't start to act up. Illnesses could have curious consequences, and for all he knew he might turn into a zombie himself. Thankfully, his mind wasn't anywhere near coherent enough to come up with that thought or Chris would have transported himself as far away from any of them as he could manage in his weakened state.

The whitelighter had gotten himself to a corner and curled up, a blanket wrapped tightly around him despite the high fever that had his hair clinging to his forehead. Half of his neck was hidden beneath bandages that weren't as white as they should be, but then, he wasn't holding still either. He scarcely remembered anyone even patching him up or getting him onto a cot. His neck and throat throbbed, though the latter was in part due to the dry heaving he occasionally had been doing when he regained consciousness as the smell of decomposition and old blood clung to him, a smell that had only been renewed by waking up next to his mother's dead body. The blanket helped with that, since it covered up his now quite dirty and stained clothes, which would likely have to be burned.

At the moment he was staring off into space, breathing elevated some but at least he wasn't hyperventilating anymore. Elliot would be proud. Well, if she wasn't scared he was going to die on her or get her sick too. The sound of footsteps nearby made his eyes focus and he turned his head in the direction of the sound, only to wince at the sharp pain that went through his shoulder and neck at the movement. Slow movements, right. One of the girls had told him that, though at the moment he couldn't remember which one.

Connor had just thought his day was off to a rough start. He'd stuck to Tonks overnight, not because of Andy's 'buddying up' theory, but because it was just plain weird out there. Zombies, darkness, whatever. And then waking up to their little visitor... Less than pleasant. He hadn't wanted to leave her, considering what they'd just gone through, but a call from Chris was becoming just as important as a call from Abby would be. His friend sounded in desperate need and Connor wasn't going to let him down.

Slipping carefully to the gym, Connor peeked into the familiar building. No, he didn't expect there'd be any living zombies wandering about. Not if they'd woken up to Luna. He knew for a fact she'd been a zombie merely two days before, before Chris had destroyed her. If she was gone, likely the others were as well. But it didn't hurt to be cautious.

There looked to be chaos in the gym, but there seemed to always be when Connor was there. It didn't take him long to figure out that bodies were being buried, just as they'd done with Luna. No, he knew instinctively that the other zombies were gone. So why hadn't the sun come up? Were they just trying to screw with their heads a bit more?

He found Chris relatively easily enough, and when he did, his stomach dropped. From the distance he stood at, he couldn't tell what. But something was very, very wrong. He ran over as quickly as he could and dropped to his knees by Chris' side. "What the hell happened to you?" he blurted, his eyes running over his shivering friend.

It took a moment for his eyes and brain to match up that it was in fact Connor coming over, and by the time he did his friend was already dropping down at his side. The familiar presence -- living presence -- was a welcome relief, though somewhere in the back of his mind Chris knew later he would likely feel slightly ashamed for seeking out his charge the way they called out to him.

"Got bit." He had to try twice to get the words out, voice rough-sounding but weak. Just having to say it again made him think of Piper, and that and the pain made his eyes dampen. "You okay?" Chris tried to sit up a little straighter and look over Connor, though it should have been clear to him already that his friend was fine. Or at least not physically injured.

"Sit back," Connor urged, panic rising up in him. He couldn't lose someone else. Not now, not this soon. "Are you--" The question might've been 'are you going to die', but Connor didn't have it in him. Even he wasn't as uncouth as to ask that. "Okay?" he asked, instead. Him? Oh, he was just fine. "Made the walk from the clock tower to the gym, think I'm doing alright, don't you?" He tried to keep the tremble out of his voice. "A right sight better than you."

Nope, he couldn't help it. His voice definitely shook on that last bit. If he was worried, so what? As far as he was concerned, he was allowed to be. People died here. The proof of it lay at Tonks' side this morning, and clearly around the gym. And Connor didn't know if he could stand to lose anyone else.

Chris just shook his head slightly but he did sit back, or rather, sank back against the wall. He was at least mostly in his right mind at the moment, even if he might not be in the most rational state, and the other's concern came through loud and clear. Normally he would have done his best to play it off but this was so far from normal. It had taken far too much energy just to argue briefly with Rose.

"Had to get away from... her." He couldn't bring himself to simply say 'the body'. Maybe he should, and maybe Rose was right that it had never really been Piper, but he wasn't able to think like that right now. His mind was having a hard enough time just dealing with the attack the day before. Chris swallowed with some difficulty, eyes darting over toward the general area of the cots. He could still smell it, even if it was simply his imagination at this point. "It's not... I don't..." It hurt to speak but he forced himself to anyway. "I opened my eyes and she was right there. Dead. Really dead this time."

Chris shut his eyes, trying to push the image from his mind, not aware of the few tears slipping down his cheeks. With his fever yet to break he was scarcely aware of the moisture anymore, whether it was from sweat or tears. "I'm sorry..." His voice faded into a small coughing fit, Chris burying his face in the blanket in an effort not to cough on Connor. "Can you believe I've never been sick before?" He managed somewhat of a laugh without dissolving into more coughs, looking back at Connor. If he died on his charge he was surely going down in history as the worst whitelighter ever.

Connor's eyes followed Chris' to the location of the cots. Obviously, Tonks hadn't been the only one given a close friend as a bed buddy. "Who was it?" he asked quietly, looking into Chris' weakened eyes. "Who did they...give you?"

Oh, he probably shouldn't have asked. Tact wasn't Connor's strong point. What were the odds Chris wanted to talk about the woman he'd been presented with that morning? If he'd woken up to Steven or Cutter or Heaven-forbid, Abby, he wasn't sure whether he'd want to discuss it or not. It would hurt either way, he imagined. That wasn't something he was sure he was ready to deal with. But this place? Wasn't likely to give him a choice in the matter.

"I'm sorry. So sorry. How do you feel?" Like crap, Connor, obviously. Yet another stupid question.

"My mom."

Chris shuddered, trying to press himself closer to the wall though human contact was what he really wanted. Needed, even if he didn't know for certain if he could handle it. He was slightly worried about getting others sick though, and that was a small part of his logic for finding himself a dark corner to hide away in. His mind hadn't quite caught up to the fact he had been bitten by a zombie and was unnaturally sick because of it, and could very well turn into one.

"She was one of them. I don't know how but she was and..." The pain of speaking and the agitation that was rising the longer he thought about Piper cut him off, wincing as he slipped a hand out of the blanket to press to the bandage on the left side of his neck. Elliot had done as well as she could cleaning him up, but there was still grime under his nails and some dirty patches from the morning's shock.

"Just rest," Connor urged, laying a hand on Chris' shoulder, but he let the words sink in. His own mother? Would the bastards running this place let no one rest in peace? First he'd been bitten, then he'd been presented with his dead mother. He was already ill, he didn't need this.

"Hang on," he said, hopping to his feet. Honestly, didn't the people here have any common sense? He grabbed a spare sheet laying in a corner and tore it in pieces. The fabric was so old that it didn't take an awful lot of effort. Which was good. Connor was the brains, Becker was the brawn. Even Abby could kick his arse.

He hurried to the showers, soaking half of the pieces and keeping the other bits dry. As quickly as he could manage, he rushed back to Chris' side. "Easy, mate," he said softly, cleaning the dirt and grime and blood as best as he could. "It's a bit cold, but we'll get you dry in a bit." After all, that's what the dry pieces were for.

He simply nodded and tried to ignore the sudden worry that flared up, though whether it was that Connor was abandoning him or that something might happen to the other man one couldn't say. It wasn't really his way, to latch on to someone else or even attempt to lean on them, not even when it came to his family if he thought about it. But was Chris really anywhere close to being himself at the moment? To see Piper like that... hell, just to see her here at all... he didn't even know what to think. His mind couldn't begin to process it, if it would at all. Only time would tell on that. Provided, of course, he survived whatever was laying waste to his body. If there was ever a time he needed Leo to fix him up, it was now. One downside to all that magical healing or simply never putting himself in situations where he could get sick? His body wasn't prepared to handle illness the way most humans his age would be. Even if it were a common flu and not from a zombie bite he still would have found himself horribly sick. If he managed to make it through without dying or turning into one of the undead it was still going to take him some serious time to get healthy, and who knew how long for the wound to heal.

His eyes were shut when Connor returned but they flickered open at his friend's voice, and Chris offered no resistance to the minstrations. "Doesn't feel cold." It felt kind of nice, actually. A welcome break from the heat he'd been feeling for hours. Which likely spoke to just how high his fever was. "Sorry. You don't have to..." Take care of him? Stay with him? Chris didn't even know.

Didn't feel cold? The water should've been just this side of freezing. Maybe the change in the weather outside had warmed the pipes a bit. Or maybe Chris was just that warm. Connor bit his lip at the thought, but didn't stop his gentle touch. His friend didn't deserve to lie in filth just because he was ill. Even if here about to... Well. Connor just wasn't going to think about it and that was that.

"Shut up," he told Chris with a weak laugh. "I'll do what I want, thanks. And if I'm going to hang around you, you need to smell a bit better, mate, you reek." He was joking, of course. After all, he'd nearly been devoured by a giant centipede, a little goo and gore never bothered him. He did the best he could without humiliating Chris for, well, ever. When he was feeling better, he could go give himself a good thorough scrubbing. For the moment, at least, he just needed to feel a bit better. "I'll stop by the thrift store today, too, get you a bit of something clean to wear. Shouldn't be hanging around in these." Even moldy, musty seventies clothes had to be better than wearing what he was at that moment. "Has anyone looked at...that?" he asked, nodding to the wound on Chris' neck. "One of the doctors around here?"

A slowly closing door down the hallway of in the direction of the locker room and gym's offices didn't make a heck of a lot of noise. In fact, it was entirely possible that the boys sitting out in the main area didn't even know she'd been back there. She'd been hiding there for days. She'd been avoiding the world - because deep, deep down she knew one of those animated corpses would be Deans. She didn't know for sure, of course that he was out there now; but, she just feared the worst, and that kept her in that little, dark room with her maglite and a few snacks.

Two days of that and she eventually had to emerge. She had to step out into the main room and see that there weren't any patients there. Looking around with squinted eyes, the heavy metal flashlight pointed to the floor she followed the sound of talking until she found the two young men talking.

"You both alright?" She asked quietly, coughing a little to clear her throat. Surely they'd seen her coming, it was impossible to miss that bright beam of light.

Connor's joking brought a slight smile to his face and Chris managed another small laugh without coughing. Maybe he was feeling better already? A stretch of his left arm as Connor wiped the grime off his skin and the resulting twinge of pain he felt spike through his shoulder and neck told Chris it was just wishful thinking. He wasn't even thinking of being embarrassed either; he didn't have the energy for one, and he was more thankful than he could put into words for the company and kindness.

"Not today... this is a new day, right?" His brows furrowed as he forced himself to think and try to remember. Which was mildly difficult considering he had been in and out of consciousness several times since managing to orb himself to the gym. But he knew since he had woken up this time he hadn't seen anyone but Rose. And Piper. Well...

Something caught his eye over the other man's shoulder and he squinted, only to grab tightly to Connor's forearm when he realized it was a light. A bright light moving in the darkness and coming toward them. Was the Angel of Death coming for him in this place? Chris could only stare for the moment, easy for his mind to latch onto such ideas when he was in such a state. Which meant at the moment Connor was going to have to do the talking.

Chris' grip on Connor's arm could've meant several things. He was in pain, he was trying to tell him something but his voice had stopped working...and then he looked up and saw the light and the pretty young woman attached to it. He started at first, then smiled. "Define alright?" he asked, resting his hand over Chris'. It did take him a second before he realised that might look a bit like a romantic gesture, but his friend needed comfort. Masculine attitudes could go fly a kite.

He looked back at Chris with concern written in his face. "I'm fine," he told the woman, but his eyes ran over his friend with worry. "Him?" Glancing back up at her, he tried to smile, but it was weak. Their postures were too similar to him. Sitting side by side with his friend and mentor as they spoke their final words. He wouldn't, no, couldn't do this again. Not so soon. Not already. Connor swallowed hard and released a slow breath. "He's not doing quite as well. We're working on that, though."

Though he didn't ignore Lexie, or brush off Chris' desperation, he returned to his ministrations. The majority of the more obvious grime had been removed and Connor was working on drying the soaked skin, knowing that a great deal of it was sweat from an obviously raging fever. He took one of the still wet clothes and carefully urged Chris' head up to place it at the back of his neck, attempting to cool him down as best as he could.

There was a look of shock and surprise on the quiet man's face and Lexie tried to give him a reassuring look. He looked ill, a sheen of sweat and water visible on his skin and a fevered look to his eyes. The look of concern from the man leaning over him wasn't lost on Lexie, either.

Bending over, she set the flashlight on end, balanced neatly on that flat bottom a bright beam lit up a large cirle on the gym's ceiling, adding to the modest light of torches and whatnot in various points of the gym's wide expanse. "I'm Lexie," her smile a little faded (sorry boys) as she looked from the healthy to the ill. She wasn't in her scrub pants, and that white coat had long since been lost; but, clipped into the belt loop of her jeans was the last semblence of her credentials - a heavy, lamibated badge with a photo (she looked much happier in it), the emblem for Seattle Grace, and her name, Doctor Alexandra Grey. She didn't lift it up or show it to them - but, it was there and it sort of helped remind her that she had a job to do around here - and it wouldn't do to hide back in her room from those things that groaned and quite obviously bit.

Squatting down at Chris' bedside she tilted her head a little, eyes caught on that nasty looking wound. "Mind if I take a look?" She asked Chris moreso than Connor.

So, not the Angel of Death this time. Chris marginally relaxed, as much as one could in his condition, but he eyed her uncertainly. She looked like she meant to help at least. Kind of reminded him of Elliot, in a way. He barely felt Connor's motions, just that he was there, which was more than enough for Chris. So long as his mind didn't drift to the last time he had been badly injured, when Leo had hovered there and held on to him near the end.

Chris tried to clear his throat so he could speak, no matter how both motions made him wince. "Alright." Maybe she was a whitelighter in disguise, and just needed to know where he was hurt so she could heal him. It was a fanciful thought, but no more than his hope that Leo would appear and heal him and tell Chris that he'd just been trapped in a parallel world and Piper was still alive and well.

At first, Connor wanted to tell her no. After all, they didn't know who half these people were. Who knew if she'd help or hinder. Chris was one of the few people Connor trusted in this strange world of theirs and he would fight for him with whatever amount of power he actually had. Which, you know, wasn't a great deal.

But then he caught a glimpse of the badge at her waist. A doctor. The woman was a doctor, and good god, they needed one of those just then. "Please, do," he offered, scooting to the side so she'd be able to reach his friend with a little more ease. To the side, but not away. Chris had asked for him, probably not for this purpose but he had. And he wasn't about to leave him with a stranger, even one with a medical degree.

"He's been bitten," he said quietly, looking the woman over for a brief moment. "By...you know. One of them." The word was whispered, because how could Connor possibly say out loud that he'd been bitten by his own mother? It was just...wrong. "Is there... Do you think you can help?"

'Alright,' the one guy said and Lexie was turning to take up her flashlight, turning it off she spoke quietly. "I'm going to try not to blind you..." With a click the bulb was burning brightly again, Lexie's hand clasped over the light as she tried to get it fairly well aimed at the wound before unblocking it.

Any reaction she had to what Connor said about Chris being bitten was absorbed into the back of Lexie's mind as she took a look at the very pronounced bite. "Just a second," she said, stepping away from the cot to cross the room. Picking through her medical supplies she found some gloves, some gauze, and some antiseptic. She was back, carefully pulling on the gloves and holding her flashlight out to Connor. "Think you can hold this for me?"

She was walking around to the other side of the cot and kneeling down, putting on her best "I've got this covered" face. "Now, I don't usually treat patients without knowing their name first," she hinted, looking from one man to the other while she unwrapped the bandage and prepared the antiseptic.

With the talk of light Chris closed his eyes and turned his face away slightly, swallowing nervously. He didn't want to know how bad it was. He could feel how bad it was. But then again, some of that might have been the emotional pain he was in. At this point it was all just pain.

Feeling himself start to drift off he forced his eyes open to stare at the wall, knowing enough to know that drifting in and out of consciousness wasn't a good thing. It was something he was sadly somewhat used to. He wasn't sure if that said he lived a dangerous life or that his defenses sucked. Man, where was Leo? He really, really needed him right now. Even more than when Gideon stabbed him because Chris had known the moment it happened that he was going to die; if Leo or the sisters had managed to catch Gideon, and not kill him, the darklighter had no incentive to undo what his poison caused. Now Chris needed his father as much to heal the physical wound as to help him find a way to cope with finding Piper dead and in this place.

His eyes were wet again, not that he noticed, and the edge of panic in his mind was making his breathing shallow. It took a moment for him to realize the woman was talking to him, or about him, rather, and he cut his eyes over to glance at her. "Chris." he rasped, tongue swiping quickly across his dry lips, gaze dropping to her hands and then away before closing. "I'm going to die, aren't I? Or turn into one of them. That'd be worse." He really needed to quit talking, he sounded horrible, but he couldn't help it. Nor could he help the worry that bordered on panic in his voice.

"Shhh," Connor murmured, hearing the strain in Chris' voice, even if he wasn't entirely sure of the cause. Pain or general fear, it could've been either, or even both. But he was hurting just the same and he couldn't stand to see him in as much pain as he was in. "Don't say that. You'll be fine." He wasn't entirely sure of that, though. Chris had basically just voiced Connor's worst fear, the nagging thought plaguing in the back of his mind. He didn't want to face this place alone. Seeing Luna that morning was enough for him to know that people were indeed capable of dying in this place. He didn't want Chris to be next.

He looked expectantly at Dr. Grey, accepting the flashlight and holding it in place as best he could, trying to calm his shaking enough to give her a steady work surface. "Chris Halliwell," he added for Chris, swallowing hard. "And I'm Connor. We-- I haven't seen you before," he added quietly. Chris had spent a bit more time in the gym than Connor had, thanks to time he'd spent at the Clock Tower after being dropped off there. He wasn't sure if Chris had run into the doctor at all.

"Die of boredom, maybe," Lexie said in a low, serious sounding tone. Her preliminary assessment of Chris was already underway when she heard Connor introduct the pair of them. "Nice meeting you both," she said, looking up with somewhat happier eyes.

When Connor mentioned that he hadn't seen her before she shrugged a little. "I've got a room, back and down the hall past the showers," did you guys even know there were showers? "I've been kind of... hiding." Hiding, moping, fearing; it was all sort of the same, really. Oh, lets not forget avoiding, too.

Careful fingers were gently pulling at the torn tissue of Chris' wound, trying to get a better look at the damage she'd reach with her free hand to guide Connor's and that flashlight into better position. The wound was red and enflamed within, along the borders the tissue looked like it was already starting to go necrotic, which gave the young doctor pause. It really was a bite from a zombie, wasn't it? They'd have to wait and see, really. See if all those movies were right.

Sweet Jesus.

"We're going to have to get more fluid into you, Chris. And I'd love to give you painkillers, but I'm worried what they'd do to you right now. Plain old aspirin..." She was thinking aloud. "Any allergies?" She should have asked first, shouldn't she? He could have a latex allergy for all she knew. Ooops.

She looked at Connor, pulling back a little from Chris' side as if to indicate she was pretty much done. It wasn't like she could pull out her magical zombie-flu remedy or anything. Sorry.

When Connor said he would be fine Chris laughed, a hollow sort of sound that didn't last long before he dissolved into another small coughing fit. Oh well, at least his face was turned away from the both of them. Any more panicked comments were put on hold as he hissed sharply in response to what little pressure Lexie put on his skin and Chris squeezed his eyes shut against the pain. His hands were gripping tightly to the blanket as it didn't usually happen that he had anyone nearby that he could seek comfort or distraction in from pain.

And death from a zombie bite was probably painful, as much as it hurt now. It was right up there with darklighter poison, except worse because he kept feeling it happen, kept seeing Piper's gruesome face looking at him with that smile he knew so well right before he was practically drowning in decayed flesh. But would he die or would he turn? Would he know if it was happening? Maybe it already was. He kind of felt like he was going crazy with countless possible causes for it.

"Just kill me." Wrapped up in his paranoid, panicked thoughts, Chris hadn't heard a word Lexie said. "If I'm going to turn you should just kill me now, before it happens. Before I become one of them. I won't let this happen to anyone else." Despite the feverish glaze to his eyes, his expression was serious as Chris finally looked at the two of them. Just as he vowed to stop his brother if he couldn't save him, Chris would hold himself to that as well.

Sorry, Chris. Even if the young doctor would allow it, the man next to her wouldn't. He'd seen too much death already. As he'd told Tonks just that morning, he'd lost someone who meant the world to him only days before. The witch hybrid might die before the day was out, but it wasn't going to happen with his consent.

"Yeah, no," Connor said, shaking his head. "Not going there. If you turn into one of them, I accept that I have permission to lop your head off. Till then... We'll cross that bridge when we get to it.". He looked anxiously over at Lexie, looking every bit the part of a family member pleading with her to save his loved one. "Besides, it might not even happen. Maybe it's like pneumonia or something and some people are just fine after it."

"You!" She suddenly piped up. "No more of that!" She'd been trying to make light before, trying to keep Chris from thinking about the peril he was in. Now, hearing him request to be euthanased, like some sort of animal, Lexie felt her stomach knot.

"You have all the symptoms of pneumonia," she lied. "Last time I checked we didn't kill people because of that."

She had peeled off her gloves and she was giving Connor a rather serious look. A look that said it really wasn't pneumonia. "So, any other requests you'd like to make?" Her tone was pointy as she directed it at Chris.

"I'm not going to be just fine after having my undead mother try to rip my throat out with her teeth!" he snapped, or it might have sounded like snapping, if his voice were less raspy and panicked. Chris sat up as well as he could manage, wincing and trying to ignore the overall not-good feeling that he had. "I'd rather die than end up as one of those things, and I'd certainly rather die before getting the chance to hurt anyone else."

His pulse was pounding in his ears, chest tight, and his borderline hysterical ranting halted as he pressed a hand to his head. Definitely worse than poison. At least poison knocked him out rather than giving him delusional thoughts like he was about to turn into some sort of monster. He felt like he was going to pass out or throw up, or maybe both.

"It wasn't her, Chris," Connor protested. His eyes weren't on his friend, though. They were on Lexie, as he received the look she'd given him with a slow and scared nod. They were going to lose him. "You know it wasn't, your mum, she's not like that. It's this place, it's what they've done to her." Which sounded all well and good in theory, until he remembered that he'd told Andy the same thing about Luna and look where it had gotten him? Another friend who'd nearly died and was now in a horrible state of grief. And Andy hadn't been bitten.

It was going to be a very long day, wasn't it? Still, it wasn't as if Connor hadn't faced the same sorts of things before. He'd watched a parasite all but consume his best mate, after all. "You won't end up like that," he said, much more quietly. "We won't let it happen. If it gets to that point, ask me again. But I'm not letting you up and die when you've no idea what's about to happen."
