Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:!complete, day 23, location: gym, rose tyler, the doctor (nine)

Who: Rose Tyler and anyone in the gym
What: A very rude awakening
When: Day 23, bright and early
Where: I SAID the gym!
Status: Active
Rating: PG...13!

She may have only known him a couple of days, but Rose was beginning to consider herself close to Chris. To see him so weakened and miserable and ill physically pained her. The man had listened to her babble about complete nonsense, had confided in her about some of his own sufferings, and, well, she could possibly move him up into the makeout buddy category, too. In this place? It didn't hurt to find some comfort, and after the week she'd had, it felt good to know she was wanted, even if by someone who by all rights was a complete stranger. Even if he was a good-looking, green-eyed, good as gold, guardian angel style complete stranger.

Though she'd tried desperately to stay awake by his side, helping however she could, she'd dozed off for what she assumed were just a few moments. But that clearly hadn't been enough for their beloved management, said with sarcasm dripping. They'd moved her from her night watch at some point, plopped her into the area she'd been calling 'home' since she'd retreated to the gym, and given her a giant body pillow. In her sleep, all she knew was there was an additional figure, a tall lanky one that seemed terribly comfortable.

Until the smell reached her.

Rose stirred, knowing immediately something was off. First of all, she hadn't had anyone sharing her bed since Mickey, and this figure was definitely not shaped like his. Secondly, she definitely hadn't in this place, and she knew as soon as she figured out she wasn't in her comfortable TARDIS bed that she was still in that awful glass box. And thirdly...no man she'd ever invited home, even at her drunkest, would smell like that.

With a sinking feeling in her stomach, Rose's eyes flickered open. She turned over and blinked. The dread she'd felt turned to horror and she sat up lightning fast. No. No. They hadn't. They couldn't have! But it was him. And he? Had been presented to her like a gift, all wrapped up in his tattered trench, his ruined suit, and his bruised, beaten, and mangled body.

At that point, she didn't care who she woke up. All sense left her as Rose let out a panicked, desperate scream. Not quite loud enough to wake the dead--the proof lay lifeless beside her.

The Doctor had woken bright and early that morning.. except that it wasn't bright, and he didn't know how early it really was, thanks to it being a little too dark to read his watch in the museum room he was occupying. The boy werewolf had remained there with him and was still sleeping when he silently left. He'd gone out immediately to begin searching the museum for any sign of Rose, or his older self-- Jack Harkness was also kept an eye out for, because that would certainly be someone that he would be pleased to run into. However, he wasn't able to find any of them within the confines of the museum, and his search took him carefully outside and onto the streets.

He was slow and silent at first, keeping out wary blue eyes for any undead invaders, if the sun hadn't come up, this could easily mean that the creatures were still out and about, waiting in the shadows. What did the Doctor do when he encountered zombies?

He ran. That was all he could do. He wasn't going to use a gun or hack them to bits.. he was just going to run. So this morning, he was ready and rearing to go, if he needed to. Thankfully, he wouldn't. And thankfully, the gym was his next stop. If people weren't in the museum, they tended to cluster into the gym, it seemed like a safe enough idea. Safety in numbers and all that..

It took him a few minutes to get inside the gym, having to work his way past the defenses that had been set up inside, barricading the door. But once inside, he was patting down his leather jacket with both hands, feeling for his screwdriver that he knew wouldn't be there. Force of habit. When he didn't find it, he continued on those few steps, shaking his head.

Until he heard the scream. The Doctor knew that scream, he'd heard it more than once, unfortunately, so he had no doubt it was Rose. It only took him a few rushing strides to get across the gym and to the source of the screaming, where he suddenly came to a stop in front of Rose, now sitting up beside the mangled, smelling corpse of his successor. However, he did his best not to be phased and only stared a scant second at it before reaching down to catch the blonde's arm and haul her up and away, tugging her into his own arms and wrapping her up in them, crushing her into his chest as he looked down over her shoulder at the corpse there.

It was so hard to tell if it was real.. living people were easy, Time Lords could tell. But dead bodies? It just wasn't the same.

"It's okay." He assured Rose softly, comforting the best he knew how. Sorry it wasn't as well as the suited man comforted, Rose. Did you wish it was him holding you like this, and the leather-clad man mangled in your bed? Or maybe you wished it was Chris holding onto you?

There'd been plenty of times Rose had been grateful to see her Doctor. When he'd shown up just in time to stop her from being killed by an alien-infested corpse in Cardiff, that was a big one. Or when they were being chased by gas mask corpse boy, that was big, too. But when she'd woken up next to a zombie of a much more personal sort? That was an entirely different story all together, wasn't it?

She buried her face in his chest, the days of hurt and anger she'd felt draining out of her as she found the familiar comfort in the curve of his muscle tone and the scent of warm, pliable leather. Her small fists gripped the fabric in between her fingers and she hid. For once, she wasn't afraid to say that this was one thing she couldn't handle. Happy, Management? You'd broken her. She'd taken all the blows you'd thrown at her like a champ, but the man, the other version of this one she held now, lying broken beside her caused her to crumble.

And if she knew a flicker of the thoughts that ran through the Doctor's head, she'd have slapped him for his words. Chris was a sweetheart, one who'd come to mean a lot to her in a short time. And she wouldn't deny an instant attachment to the pinstripe wearing man lying there where she'd only just been. But the one holding her at that moment was the one who was her closest friend, the one she'd told everything to. And she'd never, ever wish the fate of the tenth Doctor on him, or anyone else for that matter. They were talking the woman who'd fought for a Dalek, showing compassion where no one else had. To entertain the idea, even for a moment, that she'd rather the two Doctors switched places was beyond unthinkable. No matter how angry she'd been with them.

"I'm sorry," she whimpered, unable even to cry she was so stunned. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean... I just wanted... Please..." No, she wasn't making sense, and anyone who expected her to was entirely daft. All she knew was how very much she cared about him, and that meant that at some point in her time line, she'd grow to care for that other one just as much, possibly even more. He'd made an impact on her already, and she'd only just met him in this universe. How could he be dead?

"It's okay, Rose. It's alright, everything's going to be fine." Right? Of course. The Doctor would make everything right, he promised. And he'd make sure that body was gone, they'd have to collect them all up, put them in a central location, and burn them. They had to, to keep from spreading disease. No one was going to like it, it was going to smell awful, but it was a necessary evil.

His arms wrapped tighter around her. "I'm sorry too." He finally whispered those words nearer to her ear, before he was backing up towards the exit of the gym, taking her further from that stinking, rotting corpse. He didn't want her near it-- he didn't even want to be near it. If that really was the later Time Lord, it meant the death came quickly enough that it was impossible to generate.. but really, The Doctor wasn't convinced that the corpse laying there was real at all. It didn't sit well with him. Something was off, something was wrong. And he had a feeling that his suit-wearing counterpart was still out there.

"We're going back to the museum, I left Remus there." And he as hoping that he might be able to help you steady out, having someone to look after. It might make her feel like she was a little more in control of the situation.

For the moment, she was willing and pliable and it was easy for him to move her. She wanted nothing to do with the body. Rose wasn't daft, she knew it was merely a body. The soul of the Doctor, the other Doctor, was long gone. It didn't mean she didn't care, her unwillingness to say goodbye to it. The fact was, she cared too much. The last words she'd said to him had been cold and cruel, and it was how he'd remember her forever, in whatever eternity Time Lords ended up in. She couldn't look at those dead brown eyes or his battered and destroyed body. Even his bright red chucks seemed wrong on such a mangled body.

But when he mentioned leaving for the museum, she pulled away with a small sound that might've been a whimper, or could've been a groan, one would have to know her exceedingly well to tell the difference. Though her hand still rested on his arm, she took a step back, her brown eyes looking pleadingly up at him. "I can't leave," she said softly. "I can't leave him."

For a second, she dared to look back in the direction she'd come from, but it wasn't for the departed Time Lord, but the still living Whitelighter. "My friend. He's sick, Doctor. Really sick. They got him, the zombies. I can't leave him." Already she could hear his overprotective argument, but she was ready.

When she'd pulled away from him, but hadn't broken all contact, the Doctor turned to look back, colder blue eyes focusing on her face for a few seconds, staring intently, as if he were trying to understand. However, after a few beats of his hearts he was nodding abruptly. "Alright," That argument had never come, Rose. How did you feel about that? He'd just given in. You'd been angry at him long enough that he'd given you what you asked for, for a bit, to assure it wouldn't happen all over again. "Where is he?" They'd be taking him back to the museum with them.

With great caution. If he'd been attacked by the zombies, he might turn into one of them. They had to be very careful. "We'll take him with us so we can keep an eye on him." The Doctor had never been fond of the gym, and though he spent time here, he'd rather be in the museum, he felt safer there. There were stronger walls, thicker stone, more sturdy doors. Yes, he'd rather be there than here, and that little room that barely held three, would be able to cram in one more, if they rearranged.

Rose's eyes widened, filled with surprise at his sudden agreement. She was just so used to him fighting her on everything, making her defend herself and her feelings and humanity in general at times. Of course she knew he meant well; one didn't spend as much time with the man as she did and not know he was only looking out for everyone's best interest. But he could sometimes come off cold and unfeeling where he was really just being practical. No, the feeling, that was where Rose came in. Reminding him that beneath the skin and the bones were humans with human emotions.

Like the emotion that refused to move Chris Halliwell, considering what he'd already gone through. "We can't," she said quietly. "I'm keeping him here and I'm staying with him. For now, at least. He shouldn't be moved, not as ill as he is. And there are doctors here, the medical sort. He can be looked after." Once again her eyes trailed to Chris' cot, and she winced when she realised he'd been granted a gift from the management as well. And she had a feeling that his was just as disturbing a wake-up call as her own. "Please, Doctor," she implored, gripping his arm in her hands, holding him as close as she dared. "Don't make me. Not yet." She'd been hurt with you, Doctor, but she still held you and your opinions above that of all others. You were her companion just as much as she was yours, in the end.

Again, it took a moment of consideration, before he was nodding once, giving in to her request. He knew he'd hurt you, Rose, and this was his silent way of apologizing. He'd give you what you wanted. Your friend, and you, could both stay here.. but he would too.

"Then I'll tell your puppy where you are, so he doesn't worry anymore." Though, Remus, of course, already knew she was at the gym.. but he'd been trapped in the museum thanks to the zombies at the door. However.. if told it was safe, he'd surely come right back to her. The Doctor was hoping for it, because he didn't do domestics, and he didn't want to be the daddy figure for the strange little werewolf.

For a moment, she simply blinked up at him. Her dark hazel eyes filled with tears that still couldn't quite spill over due to the pain she'd experienced in the last twenty-four hours. She'd heard about shock, but never actually experienced it before. But now, what with Chris being attacked and staying up with him most of the night and now this... The Doctor, the suited one, left by her side, dead and mangled... Well, trauma was likely, clearly.

But she saw more than the oncoming storm in those big blue eyes. She saw compassion, the friend who'd saved her and her planet more than she could remember. When he agreed she could stay, she flung herself into his arms, clinging quite desperately. "Thank you. Thank you, I... Thank you." Still holding on to him, she continued. "Remus will be okay. He can stay there, if he wants, but I already told him a few days ago he could come stay here if he needed to."

When she rushed into his arms like that, he let out a short puff of air, but wrapped leather-covered arms around her in return and held on, looking past her at the body on her cot, a bit away from them.. then the body next to the sleeping man. "Alright." Was all he'd say to the bit about the werewolf, and he wouldn't respond to the thank yous. His arms around her were enough, he didn't need to say it out loud. He'd do just about anything for you, Rose Tyler.

"We need to get that body out of here. Both of them. Preferably before he wakes up and sees it, don't you think?" Especially if he was sick, and something like that could potentially make him worse. It wasn't something that would be good for anyone waking up.

She froze in his arms at the very mention. She didn't want to deal with it. Dealing with it made it real. Both the man in her own bed, and the woman in Chris'. The once brilliant Time Lord looked so pathetic in his current state, and it caused the lump in her throat to build up all over again. She'd done this to him. She wasn't sure how, but she knew she could've helped it. Maybe if she hadn't been so cold to him, if she'd just been more open and willing to listen. And the woman at Chris' side might have been beautiful once, were she not basically torn to shreds. She wondered... His mother had apparently been the one to bite him. Would they honestly... Who was she kidding, of course they would.

"No," she whispered. "I...I can't. I'm sorry, I know I should, for him at least, but I can't." She turned her head again, burying her face in his chest where she couldn't see the lifeless Time Lord or the young witch. The part that scared her the most was this was proof that they could take anyone. A magical woman who should've been able to help herself... And a Time Lord. The strongest, most powerful being she knew. At least, the one she was hiding against was. And if he only grew wiser as time went on, the other him had to be as well.

"Okay." He lifted blue eyes away from the side of that blonde head and looked back at the corpse laying behind her there on the cot next to Chris. "Let's get you sitting down." Was all he'd say about her current state. He wasn't going to ask questions.. of course she wasn't 'okay'. He wasn't going to poke and prod, he was simply going to guide her over to a bench on the sideline of the large court, and urge her to sit down, before shrugging off that warm, comfortable leather jacket, and wrapping it around her shoulders. He'd never know how much the act of wearing his coat comforted her, but he had hoped that it'd give her a little more of a sense of security, having an extra layer on.

He looked up just then, to see Chris startle and wake, jerking back away from that body. He didn't move towards the other man, though, because a second person, another boy he didn't know, was rushing over to his side. Then a younger woman. The boy looked like he was in good hands, and the Doctor was coming to slowly sit down next to Rose, folding his hands uncomfortably in his lap because for all of his traveling with her, he was still unsure how to properly deal with her.

"We're going to be alright." He remarked quietly, even as he watched the scene unfold.

Despite the new and sweltering heat, shock had Rose shivering violently by the time the Doctor urged her down to the bench. The placement of warm leather over her shoulders eased the shivering; it hadn't been caused by cold but by fear, and the familiar scent that drifted from it warmed her from the inside. She'd needed that small bit of comfort more than he could possibly know.

She sat, then, doubled over and curled up into herself, still shaking ever so slightly. "How?" she whispered. "We're not going to make it out of here alive. We're going to..." Her words trailed off but the meaning was obvious. They were going to die. "He...you...you're supposed to live. The body change thing..." That very thing that would turn him from the man beside her to the one who'd so sweetly comforted her when she was down on herself only days before. What if it has been him, the leather-wearing Doctor, the one she knew already? If something happened to him, then what? Would it create a duplicate of the brown-eyed Time Lord? Or would it end his race once and for all?

The thought was devastating, and she gasped for breath as the realization hit her. "Don't...please, just don't leave."

"I'm not going anywhere, Rose." Came the thicker, Northern accent. And for all of his experience, all of his years of phone box travel, and for that extra heart beating in his chest.. he couldn't find a proper way to deal with his young companion at the moment. He wasn't Eight. He wasn't Ten. Even any of his earlier incarnations could have dealt with this better. Which one of these things didn't belong? It wasn't hard to pick him out of a line up. All the nicely dressed Doctors before him, all the suits that had come before, all the dinner coats, the proper outer wear.. even that stupid stick of celery. The ones who'd come before.. the ones who would come after.. there were none like this one. This leather-wearing, revenge-seeking creature. And he couldn't help but wonder.. would he be disgusted with himself as he was now, in later regenerations? He could fathom it right now, really.. but maybe..

He let out a slow breath and turned his head, looking down at his blonde companion once again. A hand slowly came out, to wrap around her furtherst shoulder and tug her in against his side. "We're going to be fine. That wasn't me. It was just a body. I'm sitting right here, Rose. And he's here too." Now that he'd calmed down, now that he'd settled in and leaned back to take a few breaths, he was sure of it. Why? Because he could feel him. He could hear him. That impossible Time Lord.

She knew him better than he knew himself sometimes. No, he wasn't one of the suit-wearing versions. He wasn't a snappy dresser; his idea of dressing up for Victorian Cardiff was changing jumpers. Long, sappy speeches weren't his thing, either. She didn't mind it, really. Honestly, they'd come so very far since he'd grabbed her hand at Heinrik's. The man who'd give her short answers and look at her like she was a unicorn would at least listen to her rants now.

And he could offer comfort. The placement of his arm and the low rumble of his voice were all she needed just then. Rose took several, long breaths before moving her head from its position tucked into his chest to being propped on his shoulder. "Don't be thick," she said with a small hiccup, brought forth from keeping tears at bay. "He's gone. You said... If it's too quick, if you can't re--re--regenerate?" she asked, struggling to remember the word. "And then you'll... Be like him.".

"He's not gone. He's alive. He's here. I can feel him, a nice perk of being a Time Lord, we can feel other Time Lords, we can sense them. He's fine, Rose." He tightened his arm around her shoulder a bit and just continued to hold her there, feeling slightly stupid about the whole thing. Hugging? Hugging he could do, in enthusiastic moments. Even in sad ones, he could manage. But comforting? He'd never really comforted before, and he wasn't adept at it. He didn't know what he was doing. You had to help him, Rose. Help him to help you.

"I'm going to regenerate. I'm going to be him. And you're going to be with him. And that's how things go. That's how it's going to happen, Rose." It was the best he could do for her, he didn't know what else to say.

There it was again. The reminder that the bloke holding her just then wasn't going to be him for very much longer. And though it was fascinating and strange and new, it was still a scary thought. No, it didn't infuriate her like it had a few days before. She'd had plenty of time to think and the jolt of fear from the last hour had put things into an entirely new perspective for her. But it was still a lot to accept just then.

"Will I still know you?" she asked quietly, scared to look up at him. What had her future self thought when she looked up for the first time into brown eyes instead of blue? When he changed, was he already wearing that suit instead, or had the longer-haired Time Lord been wearing her beloved leather jacket at the time? "Will you know it's me? When you change?" This hanging out with a Time Lord thing was hard work.

"You'll still know me." He assured her with an easy smile, though she wasn't looking up. The Time Lord would smile anyway, because it was a nice thought. He'd go.. but he'd stay, in a way. It was such a strange transition, the memories would remain, but the personality would change, and it wouldn't really be him. Not like this. "And I'll know it's you, it'll be me, just in a new body, with a new face, new hair. And a new personality. I'll have to relearn the sort of man I am, but I'll still be me. I'll still have all my memories, and you'll have yours."

"I'd better have mine!" She challenged, though she was too weak, physically and mentally, to have much fight in her words. Instead, she gave the barest hint of a smile. Despite that, she wasn't about to pull away from his hold. She needed it, even if she wouldn't say so. "I'll have to question him, you know. Other you. Ask him things only you'd know." Like her favourite breakfast, and where they'd met Adam, and her birthday. Silly bloke already knew her middle name. Something this one didn't. It'd be hard keeping track of who knew what.

Assuming, that was, he really wasn't dead. Sure looked dead to her. Watching them die on the screens was one thing. Graphic imagery came a long way over the years, she'd found, and if they really had the TARDIS, there was no reason they couldn't tap that technology. But to make a life-sized exact duplicate of someone? Right down to each individual line and freckle? And she knew them. Oh, she hadn't known him long, but she'd studied him intensely. And, if the body by her side had been a fake, the management was terrifyingly thorough.

"If you can feel him...can you tell where he is? Do you know if he's okay?" She did trust the Doctor. Really. She just wasn't entirely sure she bought it. The regeneration thing was hard enough to wrap her head around.

"And what sort of things would those be, Rose Tyler? What color panties your mum wears?" This question came with a smile and lifted eyebrows, yes he was teasing you, but your mother had tried to seduce him that first time she'd laid eyes on him. You know.. right before she smacked ten years off his face. But hey, he'd sort of deserved it, hadn't he? He might not think so.. but he never did.

"I could find a basic direction.. but I'm sure that where ever he is, that he's just fine. I'd be able to tell if he were in any sort of immediate danger." Physically, of course, it certainly didn't count emotional or mental danger.. both of which were plaguing the older (younger looking) Doctor at the moment. "He'll be alright. We always are." The Doctor reminded Rose, with one of those trademark smiles, so sure of himself, this Time Lord was.

With a bit more casual talking and reassurances, the pair managed to pass by a good hour, before the blonde finally checked her journal, just to see... and sure enough, too-familiar handwriting. 'I'm alright'. The Doctor, of course. And this version had sat quietly as the much younger woman at his side had written back to his counterpart. Jealousy bit at him, watching the concern washing over her face as her neat scrawl made its way across the blank page of her journal.

She wouldn't even be finished with that final sentence when the Doctor noticed a person approaching out of the corner of his eye, and lifted his head to look over. Then he lifted his chin some, defensive. Nine had never been fond of the odd-eyed young man.. Ten had told him that he was important, that he meant something to him, and Nine hated the thought that someone else might eventually take Rose's place.. especially when she was still breathing. However.. with the way Ten talked about him, he had to grudgingly admit that the boy seemed to be good for the older, but nicer Time Lord.

But not nearly as good as Rose. Jealous, angry Time Lord that he was, he still couldn't get over that. However, he was rising up to his feet in order to make a proper greeting (or was it a threat?) to the red-head that was definitely not welcomed anywhere near himself, or the pretty blonde behind him. "What do you want?" The Northern accent was harsh, not bothering to take in the much younger man's appearance before he spoke. He couldn't have cared less.

After leaving le Docteur, the Cajun had gone first to the museum, then next to the gym, before he'd finally found the man he was looking for: L'Autre Docteur. Why was it impossible to think of this short-haired, big-eared man in any other light? Don't ask him, it just wasn't possible. But he had eventually seen the pair sitting on that bench and had slowly come closer, jeans, boots and a t-shirt, the Cajun was slightly dirty (as were they all) and red eyes were wider than they probably should have been, but he looked outwardly as calm as he could. He even had a little smile. And he knew that at least the Doctor, if not Rose, would be able to smell that stench of death on him.. he'd woken with a corpse, too.

But seeing as there were already two others here, it likely wouldn't be that noticeable. But just as he was coming to a stop and was about to speak, that older looking Doctor was standing up and crossing his arms over his chest in that way that the red-head hated. However, he kept himself calm as you please and just smiled away. Even when the other demanded what he wanted.

A little smile was given to Rose, apologetic in it's delivery, but he didn't linger, he knew she wouldn't forgive him regardless, wouldn't give him a second thought. And why should she? He wouldn't. Stupid Cajun.. he'd really liked her, too. Don't think about that now, L'Autre Docteur was asking you a question. Pay attention! Red eyes immediately snapped back to the man in question and he swayed forward some, like a cat stalking his prey, before drawing up to a stop. "De Doct'r, he wanna see you." Was all he'd say, looking much like a child who was asking for help from a man he didn't think would give it. He wasn't wrong.

Rose would never be able to put into words how grateful she was to have the Doctor, the original version, at least in her eyes, there for her at that moment. Frankly, he was right; the red-eyed man wasn't welcomed anywhere near her.

She didn't greet him. She didn't even look him in the eye. In fact, more than anything else, she resented him for pulling the Doctor away. Her warm, comfortable Doctor who she'd grown quite used to leaning against. A piece of her froze, though, when she heard him say the name. Their name. There had to be an easier way to distinguish these two. He'd seen him. Remy had seen the living version, the one who'd written few words for someone who'd written hundreds before. Before they'd taken him away. What had happened? Was he alright?

But she refused to speak. Call it stubborn, call it scared, but she didn't want to hear it. Not from this man, at least. A wave of nausea that had little to do with the lingering feelings of death rose over her. She glared at him for a moment, then turned back to the journal in her hands. Screw him. Let the Doctor, the more angry and bitter one at that, deal with him. She'd reply to Jack. It obviously wasn't her Remy had come for. The only words the not-dead Time Lord had for her were apparently to keep herself safe. Still treating her like a child, despite the fact that she'd thought her entire world was over when she'd thought him dead. Figured.

He'd forever and always treat you like a child, Rose.. because to him, you were just a baby. He was almost a thousand years old, you were tiny to him. He'd never really get over that fact. But right now, he was shaking his head to the Cajun's request. "I'll come later." He was with Rose right now, mutant, couldn't you see that? And he'd never walk away from her to help himself. He was a big Time Lord, whatever it was that had happened to him could wait, he could deal with it himself. He didn't need anyone, he never had and he never would. "He can wait."

And it was those words, Time Lord, that had the Cajun stepping in closer, hands curling into fists. "He can' wai', he wanna talk wit' you, he nee' you, Autre Docteur, he tol' me t' come an' ge' ya." Careful, Nine, or you'd upset the sick red-head, and you didn't want that.

But when had he ever listened? "He can wait. Rose is more important." He barely got those words out of his mouth before that fist connected with his jaw-- for the second time in a week, the Time Lord had been punched! He jerked back a step and lifted a hand to rub his jaw. Granted, it hadn't been a hard hit, the boy hadn't been trying to break any bones.. but it still smarted!

"You 'de damn reason he don' t'ink not'in' o' himself." That was snappishly returned, before the red-head was turning sharply on his heel and going right back out the way he'd come in, leaving behind a surprised Doctor, who was still rubbing his jaw. More out of shock than actual pain. Slowly, he turned around to face Rose. That had been unexpected, but wouldn't change anything, he still wasn't going to leave her to aid himself. Surely that Cajun was going back now, he could take care of the older version of himself-- not that he needed taking care of. The Doctor didn't need people to take care of him, he took care of them, that was just how it went.

Oh, it was a damn good thing the lank red-head had turned and kept moving when he did. Rose was already on her feet, ready to give the man a thorough lashing. Whether verbally or physically, she hadn't decided yet. Her small hands were balled into angry fists at her side. No one hit that man, not if she had any say about it. Well, except her mum. But that was different!

As her breathing returned to normal, she stepped forward. The fists uncurled and she slowly slid her arms around his waist, hugging him tightly. "The man's insane," she said, trying to sound stronger than she felt. Why couldn't the stupid git just leave them all alone? If he and whatshisface other Doctor were so tight, fine. If one day he'd unseat her place at his side, fine. But he didn't have to go and ruin the life she had at the moment. "You should've hit him back," she added with a tiny giggle. "I was about to. Stupid sod."

But she couldn't deny she was worried. What if the other one, what if he was hurt? What if he couldn't write back? But then, the proud, stubborn Taurus in her fought that, too. He was well enough to hang out with one Remy LeBeau. Obviously, she really had been replaced. The thought would've made her choke up if she didn't refuse to let the Doctor see her cry.

Either one, actually. But, for the moment, the one who still cared about her.

The Doctor had been hit by the Cajun once before, after making Tiny Time Lord Ten cry. And in retrospect, he could see why the other man had done it. He had told a little boy that his home was gone forever, and he'd been particularly mean about it.. But this time..? Had he really deserved that? He didn't think so. Not really. Maybe a little. The Doctor turned his head to look down at Rose as she hugged him, and a hand came to rest on her back, feeling the cool touch of his leather against his skin, it was strange, not wearing it and still feeling it on his arm.

"I think he's got feelings for him." But it still gave him no excuse.. it just helped explain the sudden outburst. It was emotion. He was emotional because he cared about a man that no one seemed to want to help. The Doctor could see why he'd been upset.. if someone had refused to come help Rose.. he would have been the same way. Maybe less with the punching, though.

"I'll hit him back next time." Sure he would. The Doctor didn't punch people.. or, he tried not to. He had before, in a pinch, but it wasn't a practice he was proud of. He was above that, remember, Rose? It just made Gambit less of a person-- it made him a stupid ape. And that was the Doctor's thought as he rubbed his jaw again, then looked once more down at Rose. "I'll go see him later." He assured her, just so she wouldn't think he was abandoning himself.. but really, if Rose had any idea what was actually going on between the trio, and the way they were trying to keep her away, she might blame it less on the Cajun and Ten, and more on Nine, holding her so near.

Luckily, she didn't.

Wrong answer, Nine. Rose tensed in his arms at that thought. Did he mean the red-eyed bloke had feelings for the Time Lord, or the other way around? No, no, she didn't want to think about it. In her heart, she knew. Deep down, she'd known from the moment Remy had all but told her to stay away. But that didn't mean she had any urge to hear it.

She slid out of his grasp, giving her brightest, fakest smile up at him. No. She wasn't going to allow this to hurt her. Not anymore than she already was, at least. Her future had already been decided by powers greater than herself. All she could do was force a smile and face what was to come. Something she was quite good at by that point. Whether she liked it or not. "You should," she said quietly, her anger fading into quiet resentment. It would figure. She finally found some comfort during this awful period and that blasted Cajun wanted to snatch it away. "He...he could be in trouble, Doctor." Slipping out of his jacket, she gave him her most confident expression as she draped it over his shoulders. "Really, can't have anything happen to him. Well...again," she added with a nod towards the body. "Cause then it'd be like losing you, wouldn't it? Already told you, can't have that happen."

"I will, but not right now." He accepted the jacket when she draped it over his shoulders, but he was sliding it off just a moment later and dropping it unceremoniously back onto hers. "Right now, I'm with you. He can take care of himself." He'd always come last, always, Rose. That was just the way the Doctor worked, no matter which regeneration it was. He was never as important as anyone else.. even if he was someone else, in a completely different body. It didn't matter. He was strong enough to handle it, he could withstand the cracks. He wouldn't break.

"Sit back down." He advised again, hands coming out to trap her biceps and turn her around, to ease her back towards that bench, to sit, before he sat back down next to her. "He'll get back to work on the modulator and I'll get back to work on the booster, and the two of us will get everyone out of here. You'll save me, and the world, then you'll get him. Maybe he'll take you to Barcelona." Cat was already out of the bag, everything had already been changed, if it was going to change. He might as well give her the added benefit of some type of security. You'd save his life, Rose. And you'd save the world. You were amazing. You deserved to know, deserved to hear it from his lips.

Why did these crazy blokes have that sort of faith in her? Didn't they get it? She was merely a shopgirl from London, and not even one of the ritzier parts of London. She was a poor girl with a somewhat shady past and no A-levels and no job waiting for her back home. There was no point putting the fate of the world in her hands because it couldn't happen.

"When's this?" she asked with an amused laugh. "Sometime between watching Eastenders on the telly with Mum and getting chips on the corner with Mickey?" Last she knew, she'd been sent home to wait patiently while the Doctor fought off a Dalek invasion. Granted, Rose didn't do patient well and had done nothing but pace and cry and snap at those who didn't need to be snapped at. But that was another story entirely. "You're the tough one, Doctor. Me, I'm just along for the ride." And what a ride it had been.

"Minutes for me." He explained calmly, seriously. "Days, weeks, months.. I don't know how long it is for you. But you never were good at listening to directions, and you'll come back in, my white knight, and you'll single handedly save everyone. Including this tough Doctor." As he said these words, he was moving his arm out to wrap around her shoulders and his coat once again, pulling her back in against his side, those cool blue eyes staying locked onto the side of her face, watching as she laughed at herself.

Had you ever seen your Doctor so serious, shopgirl? You knew that look. He couldn't be more serious about this whole thing.. you'd save him, and the world. But you'd never know it for sure until you did it. And why was he telling you? Because he was weak. Your strong, tough Time Lord was weak.. you made him this way.

When he pulled her closer, she felt a little woozy. Was he actually saying...? But she couldn't. She'd tried. God knew, she'd tried. He'd told her to leave the TARDIS, to let it die and become a relic, but she hadn't been able to. She'd spent so much time inside there, the key still rested around her neck to that very day. She'd tried every control and button and knob she could find, and nothing worked. There was no way back to the satellite, she couldn't help him.

"No," she whispered, glancing up at him. "No, I can't have. I tried. I tried so hard. You sent me away..." Like a child. Because, again, she'd always be nothing more than a child to be looked after to him. "I couldn't get back, I wanted to, so much. I told you I wouldn't leave you." Oh, hell. Tears she'd been holding back all morning, that had threatened to spill over and she hadn't let them, welled up and trickled down slowly. She hated when he saw her cry and she rubbed at her face furiously with the backs of her hands, but they wouldn't stop. "I can't lose you, don't you see? And then I did and now I did again only not you, the other you. I hate this place, I hate what it's done to us, I don't like..." She didn't like knowing. The girl who'd travelled in time didn't like knowing the future that had been laid out before her.

"Sorry," she sniffled a beat later. "Just...sorry."

"Don't be sorry, Rose. It's the truth. You'll come for me. You can't lose me. And that's why you won't. You're going to save me, you're going to be fantastic." He lifted that other hand, catching her chin and urging it up so blue could lock onto hazel, a smile lighting up his face. You were fantastic, Rose. He'd told you that before. He meant it. "Then I'm going to save you." He smoothed a thumb up over her cheek to wipe away a tear. "And things will be the way they have to be. The way they should be. You're going to travel with me-- with him-- and it's going to be fantastic. And I won't give you up for anything. I know that, because he told me. He loses you, Rose, he doesn't leave you. He'd never leave you. I'd never leave you." Though he'd threatened a hundred times, he could never really do it.

"I don't know what happens and it's better that way, for both of us. Don't ask him. Just know that neither of us will ever, ever leave you, Rose Tyler." He was finally releasing her face then, and lifting his eyes to look around the gym, only to assure that they weren't being watched, before he looked back again.

How could he be smiling when she was sobbing her heart out? Oh, sure, it sounded brilliant, didn't it? She went in and saved him at the last minute? Then he became the other him and all was fine and dandy until something went very, very wrong. He'd lost her? How? And how was she supposed to not ask? Was she dead? Kidnapped by some awful race of aliens?

But that calloused thumb ran over her damp skin and she couldn't help but smile, even if she was still crying. Stupid men. Only a man could make you smile and cry at the same time, no matter the species. "Yeah, well," she commented, the sound somewhat choked, "just be sure you know it goes both ways. I'm not going anywhere. You know, unless you trick me into it." Since, you know, he had and all.

"You know," she added with the barest hint of a smirk, "you were going to leave me back there in nineteen eighty-six. Don't think I don't know you were."

"I know." He agreed, passing his thumb over her cheek again to dry another tear, before he removed his hand all together, and for good this time. However, she was then declaring that she knew he would have left her in eighty six, and he made a noise of disapproval and shock (at least, that was what he tried to make it sound like.. it came out more like a bird squawk).

"Left you there? Maybe for a bit. But I would have come back. I did come back." He pointed out with a lift of his finger and a self-satisfied smile. "Rose Tyler, my Rose Tyler. You couldn't live in the eighties, with that poofy hair and big-bow style. You'd never have made it." A tease, of course. It was good to tease her again.

His. She liked that. The bloke in the suit, he'd always called this one her Doctor. But how many people ever called her his Rose? And she supposed, in many ways, it was true. She'd never given herself so whole-heartedly to anyone else before. Not Jimmy, not Mickey, not even her own mother. No, he was stuck with her, like it or not.

"Could have," she defended with a grin. "Always wanted to dress like Madonna. Mum wouldn't let me, said I was too young. Wouldn't be if I was stuck there at nineteen, though. I'm thinking Get Into the Groove Madonna. Or Cherish." Her face went serious as she pretended to consider it. "You'd have to come back for me before the traffic cone bra, though," she warned. "Terrible fashion statement to try and copy, don't you think?"

"Nope, if you want to go back and be Madonna, you'll have to go through all of her phases, traffic cone bra era included." He nodded decisively with that statement. "And then even your charm and good looks wouldn't get you some young, handsome, stupid thing. They'd try to get close, and you'd skewer them. And there'd go the new boyfriend." Was he jealous? Yeah, a little. .. Maybe more than a little. .. Okay, yeah, he was really jealous, but at least he didn't let it show so outwardly. He had with Jack, but that was different. That was Jack, the impossibly handsome omisexual man who could have seduced a mail box into his bed. But not the Doctor. No, Jack, you could never have this Doctor.. and maybe that was why he wanted him so badly.

"We should get you out of here." Away from the body of the man she'd grow to love. Away from the death. Away from the smell. Out into the fresh air, as there seemed to be no zombies around anymore.

"Ha, what new boyfriend?" she challenged, a wicked grin crossing her face. "Remember, Doctor, I'd be Madonna-esque. I'd have dozens of new boyfriends." The smirk she gave him was unmistakably Rose. The same girl who'd held out a hand and gotten her Doctor to dance, no matter how much he'd protested. Sure, it had taken using Jack to get him all good and jealous to do so, but it had worked, in the end. Of course, the Doctor had often played his part, too. Giving her tips and tricks on space travel to impress Adam with. Dragging her to chip shops whenever they passed one. Oh, those two went through all sorts of ranges of emotion. Teasing was just one on a ladder of many. But it was a good one. Especially at that moment.

Of course, then he had to go and ruin it and try to get her out of there. "I thought we went over this," she said, though she didn't sound angry. For her part, Rose wasn't even all that argumentative. Simply strong in her statement. "I'm not leaving. Not till I know Chris is going to be okay, and maybe not even after that."

However, she was insisting once again that she wanted to stay, and he raised his hand, as if to quell any argument, whether it was coming or not.

"Just for a breath of fresh air. Just for a moment. I think it'd be good. For both of us." He was slowly standing up then, extending that hand down to her. On more than one occasion, he'd asked her to come with him, this way. She'd yet to turn him down. "We'll come right back inside and check on him. I promise. Just for a moment, Rose." Rose rolled her eyes at him, but stopped to consider his request. "Just outside the gym," she said carefully, watching him, as if challenging him to go much further.

Because he was right. She'd never once turned down the offer of his hand, and as she reached out to grip it, she didn't then, either. And, whether she knew it or not, she wouldn't turn down the other Time Lord's hand, either. Maybe it was something about the race, or maybe it was just something about the man himself. She'd put her trust in him from that first moment he'd saved her life, and would until she was parted from him forever.

Which, if rumours were to be believed, would be much sooner than she'd like.

Still. At that moment, he was offering to take care of her, and after days of trying to take care of everyone else, she couldn't turn it down. Her hand gripped his firmly and she got to her feet, nestling in that warm, safe place by his side. "Still dark," she said quietly, as they reached the gym's entrance. "Barely even moonlight. "Still dark." He agreed as he led them through those glass doors and out onto the steps, down a few before coming to a stop. Blue eyes remained locked onto the starts in the sky, no formations he knew, no galaxies he knew. Nothing. Like it was all fake, all made up.. like a child had just dotted on a false sky. It was disquieting.

"It means they forgot to turn on the moon." Mention of the moon made him remember the werewolf, and he turned his head to glance in the direction of the museum, where he knew the boy still was. But it didn't matter right now, Rose was most important. His hand stayed linked with hers and he turned a bit, facing her straight on.

"I'm going to need your help, Rose." He announced, finally. "Think you'll be up for it?" He knew she would be, but he had wanted to verbally announce that he needed her, so there wasn't any question in her mind.

Smartass. And yet, she knew he probably hadn't meant it sarcastically at all. Typical. She knew that's what that meant, but what were their motives? Was this part of their bargain with Tonks? Were they attempting to get back at them for trying to wager for Remus? And, if they were, why something that would take it out on the entire community?

But she couldn't think about that just then. Instead, she pushed a smile on her face as she looked up at him expectantly. "Yeah? What is it, then?" Giving his hand a squeeze, she released it and dropped down on to the steps, making sure he knew he wasn't getting her any further from Chris' bedside, such as it was, than she already was.

The last time she'd tried to help him with something, it was the Delta Wave. And look where that had gotten them. Separated by a few thousand years was all. To be honest, she wasn't entirely sure she wanted to attempt it again.

Once she had settled on the steps, Nine was sitting down next to her, doing his best to keep his hand from straying out to hold onto hers. Why had he brought her out here? It was for more than the fresh air.. it was for the privacy. He'd had something he'd wanted to say, something he'd wanted to tell her.. but now that he had the chance, he was getting wet feet. Blue eyes lowered, focusing on the steps beneath his feet as he remembered the way her mouth felt on his. It had only been a kiss meant to save her life, but...

No, stop thinking that way, Time Lord. He lifted those bright eyes back to her darker set. "I need a few more hours to put it together.. but I'll tell you once I have it ready." He didn't want to get into it right now, in case it didn't work. He didn't want to get anyone's hopes up.

"Oh, come now, how is that fair?" she scolded, giving him a hard stare, though it broke as she smiled. She turned to face him, pulling her knees in to a cross-legged position and draping her arms on top. After the rough night and rougher morning, it felt good to just sit and talk.

A few more hours. Was he leaving just then? He couldn't. Not because she needed to cling to him, but he needed to go to...well, himself, actually. She wouldn't admit it out loud. Rose was still desperately trying to keep the pin-stripe wearing Doctor from her mind. Despite the hurt and fear she'd felt on thinking he was dead, she was still angry. She knew by then that he'd never intentionally hurt her. It didn't mean she wasn't hurt by all that had happened. Intentional or not, he'd all but torn her apart for the last several days.

But the fact that the normally talkative man had all but brushed off most of the words she'd read on the page was something to worry about. And honestly? She sort of hated herself for worrying.

Again, she tried to push the thought from her mind, and she propped her chin in her hands as she looked up at him. "Come on, can't you at least give me some sort of clue? Lemme know what I'm in for and the like?"

Rose honestly thought for all the world that he'd been about to kiss her. And she wasn't entirely sure she'd have minded. It was so confusing, the emotions running through her as his face drew closer. Was that what she wanted? Part of her thought she did. The other part was terrified to move what was between them to anything beyond what it already was. Especially with everything so tenuous elsewhere.

But then his face shifted a bit and she felt his breath against her as his lips touched her cheek gently. A small part of her was relieved. The other part? Entirely disappointed. And that was going to take a bit of thought on her part.

She stood and reached down, lightly brushing her hand over the back of his neck. "Thank you. For being here. I needed that." But Chris needed her. And she had to figure out what to do with two dead bodies.

"Take care of your friend, when I get back, I'll have food and water." And he'd take care of you. Those were the unspoken words between them. He'd always take care of you, Rose. Whether you wanted him to or not.

"Stay out of trouble." His parting words, as he began down those steps, pointing a finger back at her. He'd left that jacket around her shoulders.. he figured she needed the comfort more than he needed the warmth (and style).
