Day Four
Who: Dean Winchester & OTA
What: Day Four, beginning to realize...
When: Just after dawn
Where: Edge of the forest, nearest landmark: Carnival
Rating: R (always with the language)
Status: Complete

Dean had been walking for what felt like forever. His feet actually ached and his clothing was torn in various places from brambles, errant tree branches and who knew what else. He wasn't sure when he'd started walking but his eyes were slowly becoming accustomed to the light creeping across the treetops above him. It was still somewhat dark down there between the dense trees but he could see something ahead of him. A great, gleaming circle rising up into the air through the foliage.

Frowning, Dean ran a hand through his hair and a few dried and rustling leaves fluttered to the ground around him. He was all but trudging, dragging his feet at this point. It occurred to him with sudden clarity that he had no idea where he was or why he was there. He felt like he was trying to pull himself out of a long and sticky sleep that wanted to keep him buried in some fog of numbness. Something about that wasn't right and he knew it but his head was fuzzy. So damned fuzzy. He became aware of the fact that his stomach felt nauseated the further he slid forward on lazy feet. Perhaps whatever was up ahead had water somewhere inside. Or maybe there were people.

No. Not maybe. Somehow he knew there would be people somewhere. He didn't know how but that seemed stamped as a fact directly on his sluggish brain. He groaned as he stepped from the edge of the forest into a clearing filled with colorful booths and sunlight. The sun seemed to burn into his mind and he closed his eyes, rubbing them. "What the hell is going on?"

When she heard Sam reply and then heard the desk dragging against the floor for a moment, Shannon looked over her shoulder at Dean only for a quick second before she pushed the door open and squeezed through.

She moved out of the way, making her way further inside and heading straight for her stash. Crouching down, Shannon started to pick through the stash. What sounded good...? Apples, apples, or apples? Her stomach was growling and she was thirsty and--

Apparently, it was Dean. Shannon looked over her shoulder for a brief second and thought maybe she saw something behind Dean's eyes. He still didn't remember... Looking away again, she picked up an apple and a bottle of water. "I'm just gonna...give you guys a few to talk strategy or whatever without getting in the way and all that," she said with a tight-lipped smile that didn't quite meet her eyes as she got back to her feet. Shannon waved an arm vaguely behind her to let them know she'd just be in the other - any other - room before she backed away from the two of them and toward the hallway, tapping her fingers against the metal bar as she went.

Aaaawkward...

"It was nice to meet you, Hulk," she said with a small grin at Dean. With a nod to Sam, she turned and headed down the hall to give them a minute.

Sam stared at his brother's outstretched hand for a long moment before Dean grabbed his hand and shook it. The gesture seemed so unlike his older brother in regards to him that for a moment Sam couldn't think of what to do. What he wanted to do was hug him, a quick, wordless way to say how much he'd been worried about him and how glad he was to see him, but it was obvious his brother had no idea who he was. Something that made Sam's relieved smile fall away into a worried expression as he regarded Dean.

"Tattooed?" he asked, furrowing his brow in confusion as he looked first at Dean and then at Shannon for some kind of explanation. Shannon seemed in a hurry to leave the two of them alone, though, and Sam couldn't really blame her. He gave her a return nod and a tight smile before turning back to Dean.

"Shannon said they'd injected you with something." He said, getting down to business, the sooner they could work out what had been done to him, the sooner they could try to get him back to being Dean. "Do you remember anything? Are you okay?" This time he couldn't help but reach out and clap his brother on the shoulder.

Realizing a little too late that this gesture might not be welcomed by a Dean who didn't recognize him as his little brother he pulled his hand back quickly. "Oh," he said, pulling the Aleve out of his pocket where he'd slipped it to move the desk. He handed the bottle to him and then retrieved a bottle of half empty water. "Here."

Dean looked curiously at Sam as the guy's smile was replaced with worry. That didn't bode well. He wondered briefly if Sam had been expecting someone else and that Dean was not, in fact, the Dean Sam had been looking for so intently. That didn't seem like it should matter but it did send a twinge of disappointment through Dean.

That thought was quickly tossed aside as Sam slapped his shoulder in a very familiar way. It wasn't unwelcome but it was at once both a relief - because he at least had some idea of who he was and a way to find out more about who he had been - and it also brought back some of his earlier frustration considering Sam knew him but he didn't even know himself. "Sure, Sam. I'm fine. I'm apparently expired," he said and lifted his sleeve to reveal the angry red-edged tattoo with a smirk. "But I'm fine. Never better."

He was NOT about to mention the quick and extremely upsetting flash of memory of Mom pinned to the ceiling, bursting into flames. The image was hazy, as though he hadn't seen it but had imagined it from recounted stories. That was either because he wasn't fully out from under whatever drug they'd given him or perhaps he never had seen his mother that way. He was only four at the time, after all.

"Don't exactly remember my own name yet to be honest but Super Girl, uh Shannon, here," he said, indicating Shannon with a charming smile in her direction, "says I'm Dean and I'm your brother." He accepted the bottle of Aleve and the water, popping a pill into his mouth and swallowing it down with a swig of water. "Thanks. So, brother, how is it we visited all of the lower 48 and ended up here? Any ideas?"

Sam studied Dean's tattoo closely, not liking the implied threat behind it. His frown deepened as he regarded Dean thoughtfully, wondering what anyone could've gained by drugging him. He didn't have to tell Dean that he didn't think the other man was fine, his expression said it without him having to.

Still, Sam was relieved to find that his shoulder slap hadn't thrown Dean for as much of a loop as it might have. He paused for a moment, catching the smile Dean sent in Shannon's retreating direction and cleared his throat. "Yeah, you're my brother alright," he said, his tone a little low as he stifled the urge to roll his eyes.

He shook his head and sighed. "No clue. I've been trying to piece everything together, but there's nothing the people we've met here have in common. Some have certain abilities and others don't. We're not even talking the same timelines here. I don't know of anything powerful enough to do something like this, or what kind of motive they'd have to bring us all together."

Dean watched Sam eye his tattoo and smirked at the frown on his brother's face. It couldn't be that big of a deal, could it? Whoever had done it was a complete asshole, that was for sure. They'd messed with his mind with drugs and left him somewhere in the middle of the woods with no memories to find a way to where? by himself. They'd had their fun but it wasn't all that serious anymore. He was in the middle of a glass cage with other people, not tied up in some dark hole near death. He got the impression that Sam was a worrywort and that made him want to roll his eyes and crack a joke but he said nothing.

Chuckling at Sam's response to his glance toward Shannon who had already disappeared, Dean shook his head. "I come by it naturally, Dad used to say. It's the Winchester men's legacy." That brought a frown to his face briefly, his brows furrowing as he struggled to place the actual memory of his father saying anything to him. He was going to have to stop trying so hard to remember though because the more he tried the harder it was and the more of a headache he gave himself.

He shook his head again as if to shake away the entire exchange and sighed. "Different timelines? What exactly does that mean, Sam? Are we talking passengers from the Titanic mingling with the pointy-eared dudes from the Starship Enterprise?"

Sam gave Dean a curious look when he mentioned their dad, his eyebrows rising slightly. "You remember dad?" he asked, wondering if whatever Dean had been injected with only had a temporary memory loss effect. He knew some drugs could, which was maybe why Dean could remember the Doctor, but not Sam. The thought that this might be the case relieved him.

"Not exactly," Sam said, cracking a small smile at Dean's question. "Not exactly that far apart. But we've got one woman saying she's from the 1920's and others saying they're from 2008. The places they're being taken from are from all over too. Anywhere from Seattle, to London to islands in the middle of nowhere." He let shrugged, looking slightly defeated. "It just doesn't make any sense."

"I remember bits and pieces. Usually when I'm not thinking about it too much. Just comes out. If I try to remember too much more it gets blurry. Eh. No big really. I'm sure it'll all come back soon but it makes my head hurt."

Dean rubbed his temple with the ball of his hand and glanced around the museum with little interest in what he was actually seeing. The place was a mess but it looked like someone, probably Sam, had done a little bit to fortify it from whatever might be outside wanting in.

"Islands in the middle of nowhere? Someone got ganked from their vacation. That sucks. Sounds like there's some kind of higher power pulling the strings. Everyone's probably still tied to their own timelines and wanting to snap back into them. So whoever is in control here is pretty powerful to keep all of us here. That's great."

He sighed and let his hand fall away from his face. His eyes were heavy-lidded though and he knew he was going to pass out soon if he didn't try to sleep. "Look, I need to rest. Whatever they gave me is kicking my ass. Mind if we pick this up again later, Sammy?"

Sam looked slightly annoyed at the fact that his brother would call losing his memory no big deal, but he said nothing as Dean rubbed his temple. Sam was just grateful that his memory was coming back at all, even if it was in little bits and pieces.

"I don't think it was exactly her idea of a vacation," Sam said, lowering his voice a little and glancing in the direction Shannon had disappeared again. He looked back at Dean, noting how exhausted his brother looked. "Yeah, that's the only thing I can think too. Which means we're dealing with someone on a pretty high paygrade and a sadistic sense of humor."

"Yeah, of course," Sam said, nodding as he moved out of Dean's way. "Get some rest. I'm going to go out and try to find out more about what's going on. I'll be back later. We can talk then."

He took a deep breath and let it out slowly, opening his mouth to say something else he shut his mouth and shut his head slightly before moving towards the door. He opened it, pausing to look back at Dean. "Try not to disappear on me this time," he said, cracking a small smile before he slid through and shut it behind him.

Dean followed the train of Sam's eyes as he mentioned that the secluded island hadn't been a vacation destination. So Shannon had been the one he was referring to. Dean lifted a brow with a slightly knowing expression which he wiped from his face as soon as Sam's glance returned.

"I have no plans on disappearing, Sam. I'm just going to rest my eyes over here in the corner. As long as Paranoid Sally drags the desk in front of the door again it should be safer than Fort Knox in here. Besides, I think they did all they were going to do to me."

Dean wandered away from Sam to the corner of the main hall of the museum. Sliding down the wall, he settled there, arms folded across his chest. He smiled at Sam, gave a little wave and closed his eyes with a deeply satisfied sigh and a scratch at his tattooed shoulder. They'd discuss the rest of it all later. Now was the time to recuperate.
