Day Four
Who: Dean Winchester & OTA
What: Day Four, beginning to realize...
When: Just after dawn
Where: Edge of the forest, nearest landmark: Carnival
Rating: R (always with the language)
Status: Complete

Dean had been walking for what felt like forever. His feet actually ached and his clothing was torn in various places from brambles, errant tree branches and who knew what else. He wasn't sure when he'd started walking but his eyes were slowly becoming accustomed to the light creeping across the treetops above him. It was still somewhat dark down there between the dense trees but he could see something ahead of him. A great, gleaming circle rising up into the air through the foliage.

Frowning, Dean ran a hand through his hair and a few dried and rustling leaves fluttered to the ground around him. He was all but trudging, dragging his feet at this point. It occurred to him with sudden clarity that he had no idea where he was or why he was there. He felt like he was trying to pull himself out of a long and sticky sleep that wanted to keep him buried in some fog of numbness. Something about that wasn't right and he knew it but his head was fuzzy. So damned fuzzy. He became aware of the fact that his stomach felt nauseated the further he slid forward on lazy feet. Perhaps whatever was up ahead had water somewhere inside. Or maybe there were people.

No. Not maybe. Somehow he knew there would be people somewhere. He didn't know how but that seemed stamped as a fact directly on his sluggish brain. He groaned as he stepped from the edge of the forest into a clearing filled with colorful booths and sunlight. The sun seemed to burn into his mind and he closed his eyes, rubbing them. "What the hell is going on?"

Shannon gave maybe-Dean a sidelong glance and grinned to herself. "And don't you forget it," she laughed back. This guy was awesome! He was like a perfect mix of Boone from before everything had gone wrong and the Doctor. He somehow already had the ability to make her laugh. And forget that she was worried about what could still be lurking in the forest. "Y'know, I might just have to keep you," she mused with a smirk. She made a conscious effort not to look at him when she said it.

It wasn't lost on Shannon that when he asked what else she knew about Sam, maybe-Dean slowed his walk. She looked over at him. "Well...yesterday there was, like, a 'town meeting' or whatever and he went to that. Uh...oh! Remember when I said that people were tied together and left for the wild animals? Sam was one of them. He and some little waif named Luna - who, by the way, I'm pretty positive is permanently on crack or something - managed to get away from two wolves. How, I don't know and I don't want to know," she said, "but he helped with skinning and cooking 'em for people..." she offered.

There wasn't a lot more Sam had done to help them get out, but Shannon didn't want to share her suspicion that maybe there was a specific reason for that and it wasn't at all positive. Instead, she added, "forgive the pun, but he's been a bit tied up the past couple of days. I don't think he really had a chance to do anything else." Part of her reasoning for saying it that way was because she wanted to also convince herself that it was because he'd been too busy; not because he was an Other. She really, really hoped he wasn't an Other.

"You ready?" she asked as they closed in on the museum. "I can go look and see if he's in there...if you're, you know, not ready, you don't have to go in yet..." she offered sympathetically. I was scared to meet him for the first time, too, went unsaid.

He'd been trying to stall and she'd picked up on it. It was almost amusing to hear her pick her brain for something more to tell him about Sam even though it was nothing very important and she steered away from the subject fairly quickly. So Sam had been part of the sick experiment Shannon had mentiond earlier. He'd survived. "He sounds resourceful for a brainiac. Guess they teach them the good shit at Harvard. I wonder if Dad knew that would happen."

Again with the random memory tacked onto the end without his realizing until he'd already said it. It caught him so off guard though because he had a brief, vivid flash of fire. He knew suddenly that his mother had died in the brilliant flames that had come into his mind and his breath caught in his throat as that memory flooded his senses, nearly bringing tears to his eyes. Sniffing hard and coughing to cover the emotion as he swallowed it down again, he looked purposefully at the museum and stepped away from her encircling arm.

"Yeah, I'm ready. I was born ready. Let's go see Sam, Super Girl."
