Day Four
Who: Dean Winchester & OTA
What: Day Four, beginning to realize...
When: Just after dawn
Where: Edge of the forest, nearest landmark: Carnival
Rating: R (always with the language)
Status: Complete

Dean had been walking for what felt like forever. His feet actually ached and his clothing was torn in various places from brambles, errant tree branches and who knew what else. He wasn't sure when he'd started walking but his eyes were slowly becoming accustomed to the light creeping across the treetops above him. It was still somewhat dark down there between the dense trees but he could see something ahead of him. A great, gleaming circle rising up into the air through the foliage.

Frowning, Dean ran a hand through his hair and a few dried and rustling leaves fluttered to the ground around him. He was all but trudging, dragging his feet at this point. It occurred to him with sudden clarity that he had no idea where he was or why he was there. He felt like he was trying to pull himself out of a long and sticky sleep that wanted to keep him buried in some fog of numbness. Something about that wasn't right and he knew it but his head was fuzzy. So damned fuzzy. He became aware of the fact that his stomach felt nauseated the further he slid forward on lazy feet. Perhaps whatever was up ahead had water somewhere inside. Or maybe there were people.

No. Not maybe. Somehow he knew there would be people somewhere. He didn't know how but that seemed stamped as a fact directly on his sluggish brain. He groaned as he stepped from the edge of the forest into a clearing filled with colorful booths and sunlight. The sun seemed to burn into his mind and he closed his eyes, rubbing them. "What the hell is going on?"

Good, at least you're willing to take an ego blow if it means getting somewhere safer, she thought to herself when she felt him lean slightly against her. She could tell he was holding back, but at least he was letting her help, now. That was something. Baby steps, she supposed.

As she walked them both back out of the carnival and onto the dirt road, she leaned her own weight on the metal bar like a walking stick. If he needed to put more weight on her, that would, at least, take some of the pressure off. She hoped.

A small grin passed over her lips when he asked if Sam was her boyfriend. No, but he's kinda cute...I wouldn't hate it if he was, she thought. "No, I just met him a couple of days ago. He was on the journals and he seemed to be pretty calm and collected about the whole thing, trying to work out..." she paused and shifted her position as she walked; the metal bar was digging into her hand uncomfortably. "...where we were and what we all had in common. Why we're here and how to get us out. He suggested we take a headcount, so I started taking a census and then..." she let her voice trail off and she sighed slightly. "And then on the second day, some people - Sam included - woke up tied to strangers in the woods and attacked by wild animals. So, I asked him to move in with me so we could sleep in shifts. Safer that way, I guess, or something," she explained, answering both of his questions at the same time as best she could.

"I guess I just figure it's better safe than sorry," she said softly, slowing her pace when she realized maybe she'd be difficult to keep up with if he was still feeling dizzy. "I learned the hard way vicariously through others, you could say."

Dean tried to walk more steadily than he felt for her sake. She was leaning on the metal bar and it wasn't like she was a big girl either. He was worried he'd hurt her but he was more worried that he looked like a complete pussy. It wasn't like he was banged up or bleeding or anything. Just dizzy. He should be able to handle that considering how many times he'd drunk himself into a stupor recently over Cassie. "Cassie?" he muttered, brows furrowing in confusion again. He pushed that from his mind in the hopes that not thinking about it would bring it to the forefront again.

"Tied to strangers and attacked by wild animals? What the fuck is wrong with people?" he asked. He didn't expect she'd have an answer but the whole thing made him angry. No one should have the power to take people while they were sleeping and put them in harm's way. "Sounds like Sam is my kinda guy. I'd love to pick his brain about a way out of this fucking place. A census is a smart idea; you know who all is around and what they can do. Sam's a bit of brainiac, huh?" That seemed familiar to Dean for some reason but he couldn't put his finger on why. Just as well though. The more he thought, the dizzier he was feeling now.

He took a deep breath and glanced at the side of Shannon's blonde head. Closer up she was surprisingly pretty in a girl next door-ish kind of way and she looked scared. He felt a pang of guilt again that he hadn't been there to protect her. She was obviously an innocent and had no context for this sort of situation. Not that he did either - or did he?

"Yes, safe is better than sorry. I feel very safe with you protecting me, Super Girl." He half smiled at the side of her face and then turned his eyes back to where they were going, concentrating on moving less wobbily along.
