Under normal circumstances, it was easy for the whitelighter to know if his charge was in trouble. There was that sometimes annoying telepathic connection for starters, but there was also a little alarm of sorts that went off, like a soft tinkling of bells. Chris didn't have any of that here, as he was operating on his own, outside of the reach of the Elders apparently. But his magic, thus far, still worked so it wasn't out of the question that such a connection would develop between he and his chosen charge. It just hadn't happened yet.
He was, however, pretty good at sensing when bad things were about to happen, and his current state of anxiety and awareness only played into it. Chris had decided to stay in the gym, figuring it very well could become the central location of the day given the presence of the clinic. That and he kind of wanted to keep an eye on Rose. But when he thought he heard people outside and got that feeling same as he had been struck with that morning when he noticed the machete it couldn't be ignored.
A quick pop of his head outside told Chris his senses were right. He couldn't make everyone out at first glance but he could pick up on the difference between alive and dead, and one of the three was most definitely not of the living. His bet was on the one that was moving a bit oddly. A few steps and he recognized the shadowy outline of a familiar fedora, and his protective instincts kicked in full force.
Without thinking about the danger to himself, Chris orbed over a few feet behind the zombie, almost immediately covering his nose and coughing at the smell from the undead body. "Hey! Zombie girl, over here!" He purposely called out louder than necessary, wanting to be sure he got the zombie's attention, and he took another step or two toward the zombie, putting himself practically within reach if the zombie were to move fast enough. To be a good distraction he had to make himself more appetizing than Connor and Andy, and he figured being closer and louder would help. What exactly he was going to do once he got the zombie's attention on him, Chris wasn't sure, but he'd figure it out. Right now what mattered was keeping the other two safe.
