Entry tags:!dropped, day 20, jack harkness, location: museum, the doctor (ten)

Who:  The Ninth Doctor & OPEN
What:  The Doctor is being useful. No, really.
Where: The Museum
When: Day 20, 4:30pm
Rating: PG
Status: Dropped

The younger (older looking) Doctor had spent most of his day yesterday and the day before at the gas station, dismantling one of the gas pumps there, taking it apart piece by piece and keeping the pieces he thought he'd need. It had taken him a few hours but he'd gotten it all done in a reasonable time and had soon hauled all of his small pieces back to his place in the museum. He didn't have everything he'd need, he would have to take apart one of those cars and use it for parts.. but he was relatively close. He had half of the parts he thought he'd need. And right now, he had spread them all out on the desk, in the middle of the museum lobby. The chair was long gone, but the desk remained, so he was standing next to it, picking through the parts and setting them out according to where they needed to go. But his mind wasn't on the work, not really. He had Rose on the brain. He had Ten on the brain. He had Remy LeBeau, Sarah Jane and Jack Harkness on the brain, and it was had to focus, but he was doing an admirable job of trying.

He had to get in touch with Sarah Jane soon, she had parts and pieces as well. K-9's ear, which was really an antenna, that he would need for this thing. But he didn't want to write her because he was concerned she might try to brave coming across the town of killer birds in order to get to him. And that wasn't something he wanted. So the Doctor just kept working on those parts, organizing. Keeping busy. He needed to.

Of everyone at the museum, the one person who could go outside if he wanted to was one Jack Harkness. Sure, it would hurt like hell for a goodly long amount of time and Jack didn't have a deathwish for pain and suffering, but he could leave. Instead, he let the day pass and just wandered the halls of the museum in an attempt to keep busy.

He was fairly certain he'd driven Ianto absolutely bonkers by this point in time. Thus, Jack left their room and turned to wandering the halls, trying to figure this place out. There had to be clues here, didn't there? Something he'd missed once upon a time because they were all too scared of what was going on to think things through logically.

And yet, with each room he passed, Jack was no closer to the answer. Those tunnels the Doctor mentioned, he wondered if there was a passage here at the Museum. Maybe more exploration would help? Not that he didn't think the Doctor was thorough, mind, but when one has nothing to lose by dying, there tended to be more risks involved.

Jack, however, didn't fancy spending another thousand or two years uncased in dirt under a city somewhere. Once was more than enough, thank you.

Turning from the other wings, he headed back towards the main part of the museum and entered the lobby. In spite of the birds, maybe the walk outside would do him a bit of good. Jack, however, didn't get any further than a few feet into the large room when he caught sight of Nine standing before him.

"Tab A goes into Slot B," Jack said, coming up behind his friend. Now, question was -- did they both know that he'd spilled the beans to Rose and if so, how pissed off at him were they?

Nine turned his head and looked back over his shoulder just in time to see Jack, his eyebrows raising up as the other man came closer and he let him know that A went into B. A small smirk came over the Doctor's face, but it quickly turned into a smile as he looked back down at the parts spread out on the desk before him. Apparently, he knew nothing. So far.

"Thanks for that, Jack. But I was rather certain that you were of the mind that Tab A could go into Slot B or Slot C. Or have we changed our minds about that?" Cheeky Doctor today! Maybe it was because he was a little on edge. The child werewolf that was sitting one floor up and about a hundred feet behind him, staring out the glass doors about two hundred feet in front of the Doctor's desk, at the birds, was sort of unnerving. Plus, his earlier discussion with Rose hadn't done wonders for him, either. And his argument with Ten. The little spat he'd had with the Cajun. This place was like a stress factory, and people snapped under pressure so easily in these sorts of places. Nine was trying to keep his cool, he really was, but he was a lot quicker to anger than his successor. "Haven't seen you in a few days, didn't end up as one of the munchkins running around here, did you? Don't know if the world could have handled that. Private Jack Harkness." Since he was a boy, and not yet the adult who was a Captain.

You knew it was funny.

Well, the banter was a good sign. Jack had a feeling that if Nine really was pissed at him, it had come out already. But so far so good and Jack was going to take these small victories wherever he could get them. They came so few and far between lately it seemed.

"Any and all of the above," Jack replied with a chuckle. Don't forget X, Y and Z either. It's those strange slots on the alien creatures you have to look out for." He smiled then, coming up to rest beside the Doctor and perching his arse on the edge of the desk. Jack picked up one of the parts up, rolling it over from one hand to another. What could he say, he liked having something to do with his hands.

"No, I didn't," Jack replied. "Managed to escape that one and also managed to keep out of the line of fire where the kids were concerned too." He chuckled, picking up another of the parts, screwing them together idly. "There's nothing about me that's ever been private Doctor," Jack said with a laugh. "You of all people should know that."

Chuckling, Jack reached out, fondly tousling the Doctor's hair. "Were you one of the kids? If you were, I'm sorry I missed it."

Just don't wait to tell him what you'd done, Captain, or that banter would turn into something much more sinister very quickly. "Doesn't that seem true?" The Doctor asked of the comment about 'all of the above', his smile widening out as he looked back down at the parts all spread out on the table.

But his eyes roamed over to those hands, the way they messed with one of the more delicate parts. But he wasn't concerned, he'd seen what Jack could handle and he knew that the other man wouldn't be reckless with something that could get him out of a Hellhole like this. And when he began screwing the parts together, as if he knew what he were doing with them, the Doctor was once again speaking up, blue eyes coming to rest on blue eyes. Really, if these two ever formed a tight alliance, they'd be unstoppable.

"No, wasn't one of the kids." But if you took a close look at him, Jack, you'd see a puffy place along his jaw, one that was bruising only slightly, but it'd be gone soon enough. Someone had punched him. Imagine that. And he was making a face at the hair messing, lifting a hand to lazily knock Jack's aside. Not like there was much to mess up, it was so short.. but still, it was the principle of the thing, couldn't let Jack Harkness go around doing whatever he liked all the time, now could we? "I take it you weren't, either. Ten was. After I ran into him, I made myself scarce. I wasn't in the best of moods." He still wasn't, but he was dealing with it and focusing completely on something else.

Oh, if he could, Jack was going to wait. And really -- he had permission from the other Doctor to tell Rose. Ten was greater than Nine, so Ten trumped Nine -- at least where the numbers game was concerned. Right then. That was Jack's story and he was sticking to it.

No, Jack wouldn't do anything stupid, but it didn't stop him from poking and prodding at things that, perhaps, he should have left well enough alone. He wouldn't break anything, but it didn't stop him from wincing hearing something bend the way it shouldn't have. Careful inspecting told Jack it was fine, so no worries there. He set said piece down and went after a hammer instead. If Jack could make anything look phallic, well... job well done.

Grinning, Jack quickly feigned a look of hurt when the Doctor smacked his hand away. "Careful there, I thought I saw a hair out of place." Hard to see given just how short the Doctor's hair was. At least, this Doctor. And yes, we could let Jack doing whatever the hell he wanted to. Because that was Jack. "No, I wasn't. Good thing too, I had enough of childhood once. And no comments about how I still act like a child, you," Jack warned, voice teasing. "Not in the best of moods? You were just missing my handsome face and winning smile. Come here, I'll give you a snog and make it all better."
