Who: River and Kaylee
Where: The Thrift Store
What: River knows where Kaylee is and goes to find her
When: Day Three, Afternoon
Rating: PG 13 just in case
Status: Active

Before River fell asleep at the theater, she had read an entry in the journal written by Kaylee. She responded and was abe to find out that it was indeed Kaylee. As she rested her shoulder against the cold metal part of the seat, River closed her eyes and tried her best to find Kaylee. After some poking around the town she saw her in the thrift store with Watanuki. The thought of Kaylee being with someone who won't hurt her made River feel a bit better and allowed her to drift off to sleep.

Since River awoke before Kaylee she decided to go to the carnival to see the Doctor. Though after growing tired of that she became a bit more desperate to find her best friend.

Rushing over to the thrift store River walked in but didn't see Kaylee right away. Running in between the different clothes racks River tried her best to call out to her best friend. "Kaylee?" she yelled over and over. She knew she was there, it was just a matter of where.

Kaylee had been in the back of the store, looking through various odds and ends with mild curiosity. Some things that were pretty little bobbles, some frightfully ugly, and some rather bland but interesting in their own way. She was not taking any, simply observing them and playing with a few things. The sound of her voice being called, especially by a familiar voice made the mechanic pick up her head and turn towards the front.

"River?" The first return of her younger friend's name was soft, but as the older girl stood to her feet, she repeated the name. "River!"

Moving quickly, Kaylee moved to the open doorway, where she could peek around the corner. Once she spotted River, as easy as it was, she gave a little wave of her hand. As she smiled, "River."

River heard Kaylee say her name the first time though it was quiet. At the sound of her friend's voice she stopped running and tried to listen again. When she heard her say her name and started to run towards the doorway to the back of the store.

When Kaylee came into view River ran up to her and threw her arms around the girl's waist. "Kaylee, I thought I was lost." she said into her friend's shoulder. Though she thought it was selfish of her, she had to admit that she was relived to see her best friend was with her.

When she had woken up alone in the forest, she had been terrified at the prospect of being alone. The two she had run into after that had not quite settled her nerves, although their presence did bring some comfort. Than Mister W. had told her that River had been among the number in this place, while before Kaylee had simply been looking over the journal's pages from time to time, unsure about leaving the thrift shop as her base of operations.

It was a relief to find someone she knew, even if she hated that they had both been taken away from Serenity, from the crew and their family.

Nearly knocked off center by her friend's smaller mass being flung at her, Kaylee caught herself and returned the embrace. "It's okay River. We might be lost, but everything that's lost can be found. And you know Cap'n...well, Zoe's real good at findin' things. Wash too! Jus' think about the last time he lost one of his dinos and he found it real quick. Hidden as it was in the galley and all." She stroked River's hair, trying to comfort her.

River nodded into Kaylee's shoulder. "I hope..." she let herself trail off not wanting to worry her friend that there was a great possibility that they would not be found. That they could be lost on some other dark planet. Besides now that River was gone, technically life would be easier on the ship. Jayne certainly would be happy. Though they'd miss Kaylee...and Simon won't stop looking for her...he can't. River tried to make herself stop thinking such things. It was getting her no where but more worrying.

She pulled back from Kaylee, "What have you found?" she said trying to change the subject a bit from something dark for once.

There was not a doubt in Kaylee's mind that the Cap'n and the rest of the Crew would come and find them. Even if it might take awhile, they would find them. She loved her captain, and knew that he loved her too. 'Sides, Jayne could track a ghoster in the middle of a hurricane-wrecked sea town, with no tracks and no special gear.

"They will River, they will," she tried to pack as much assurance and cheerfulness into that statement as possible. Which for her was quite a bit into five small words.

River pulled away, and Kaylee sent her a small smile before replying. "Nothin' gears and grease yet, but I did find some books on Ancient cars and engines. This place has clean clothes, with some bags here and there."

River nodded at Kaylee and moved over to the pile of things she had found. She knelt down and scanned the books first, though they held little interest to her and instead began to exam some of the different clothes. "Clean clothes will be rather helpful." she moved some aside. "The Doctor was trying to extract some of the power from the nearby carnival to hopefully help in a way to escape." she stated remembering how she wanted to tell Kaylee. She looked back up over at her. "Perhaps you and the books can help him?"

At the prospect of doing something useful, not to mention something with her hands and lovely machines, Kaylee brightened to an almost beaming level. "Oh shiny!" Having nothing she could really do, not even tinker, it was wearing on her cheerfulness. Not much, more a slight erosion than a total cliff wearing away. She was used to being on Serenity, where there was always something to do if you were looking for it. And sometimes not even when you were.

Cataloging repairs she still had to make and parts she wanted to replace on the ship in her head only went so far.

"That'd be great, I jus' can't feel like I'm doin' much if...well, if I'm not."
