Entry tags:!shelved, day 18, fina, location: carnival, open, sarah jane smith

Who: Fina and Sarah Jane Smith
Where: Carnival
What: She's with Cupil, experimenting with him.
When: 10am

Fina had taken a walk since she woke up this morning, taking the morning shower and whatever else she could come up with to do until she passed by the Carnival. As before with Kirk, she was still very curious to how she wanted to actually look around but this time she shook her wrist and the silvery drop-shaped creature released from her and it floated around her. Finding a good place where there were random shapes around for her to test Cupil with, she bent down and picked up something rather simple looking, a piece of dry wood in a specific shape.

"Mimic this, please?" She showed the strange creature the board. It constantly struggled and morph until it became the shape but it was unable to hold it very long and she frowned,"It's alright, maybe something easier?" The blonde dropped the board and pointed to one of the letters.

"How about that?"

Sarah Jane had headed to the carnival in the hopes of finding the Doctor. Well, one of the Doctors. The one she knew better. Not that she didn't know the previous one, it was just...regeneration made it difficult to explain things sometimes. The one she'd seen most recently, that was it. She wanted to speak with him about what had happened to her the day before, in case anyone had worried about them all. She'd have dropped a note in her journal, but that survey prevented her from doing that till she turned it in, and she'd missed the early drop-offs. Besides, she'd rather see him in person anyway.

However, when she arrived at the carnival, she found a girl she hadn't seen before, playing with an odd sort of creature. Sarah raised an eyebrow. Alien? New arrival with an alien? The shower, meals, and proper night's rest had done wonders for her mental health, and her curiosity piqued as she watched the little thing changing shape. It was rude to stare like that, so Sarah Jane decided to approach the girl and handle things properly.

"Hello!" she called, still a few paces off. She smiled and lifted a hand in greeting. "I've not seen you before. Are you new to our little cage?"

She was trying her absolute best to encourage the creature to change shape. It managed to mimic the shape of the letter Z briefly before falling out of shape and making a strange sound, like a high-pitched dropping water from a facet noise. Moving her hands to the face of Cupil, she smiled directly at him as best she could.

"Don't worry, it will come..I promise." Fina's light face smiled, but was off put by a woman showing her hand to her. Being that Fina never was approached in the way that she had been, she tilted her head at the and mimicked it only after she realized why. Sarah Jane had a smile, she approached her and the wave had like meant a greeting of sorts.

"Quite new, I suppose, I've been here for a few days now." She nodded.

Sarah Jane came to a stop a few feet from the woman and the little creature. A few days. Sarah was feeling almost more disoriented than she had when she'd lost the time after the earthquake. These new people, and others disappearing. They couldn't help if they didn't pay attention. She resolved to start paying more attention now that she'd had a bit of a breather. "I'm sorry to hear that," she said sincerely. "I really wish I could be saying hello under more pleasant circumstances."

Sarah held out her hand for the woman to shake. "Sarah Jane Smith," she said, offering another smile. She glanced at the creature again. "That's quite clever," she said, nodding toward it.

When Sarah stopped, she moved her hand out and shook it with a bowing of her white-blonde head. "I am Fina. I do not have more names than that one. --Oh, that's Cupil. He's been with me since I was born." She smiled and moved her hands to grab Cupil's face and open his mouth wide into a silly smile. Fina was excited, happy to have her creature, being or whatever he was with her.

"Why do you have so many names?"

"It's nice to meet you, Fina," Sarah Jane said, nodding her head in return. "And you, Cupil," she said, addressing the creature. Fina had referred to it as a "he", so she assumed Cupil was sentient. And she'd learned over the years to be polite to all sorts of aliens. She chuckled as Fina made him smile.

Her question threw Sarah off-guard for a moment, until she realized what Fina meant. "Smith is my surname," she explained, "the name my whole family shares. Sarah Jane is my given name, the one that's uniquely mine." She looked at Fina. "You only have a given name?" She'd met aliens - and people - who used only one name, foregoing a family or clan name, before, but it had been a while.

Fina smiled back gently, her eyes turned to Cupil who was busying himself with floating around the two while turning upside down and right side up. "Oh, where I come from a family name is very, very rare. I've only met two people who had one before. I believe one was a queen and the other was a captain of a ship. I am one of the only kind left, the other happens to be here himself. We were only given names, our elders saw no need for anything else." Fina seemed kind of bright considering the circumstances.

Sarah Jane listened to the explanation, filing the information away as she did with so many things she found interesting or thought might come in handy one day. "Where do you come from?" she asked politely. She got the impression Fina wasn't from Earth, at least not Earth as Sarah Jane knew it. Perhaps she was from the future, like Ripley had claimed to be. She hadn't seen the woman since the earthquake, now that she thought of it. One more think to look into later.

"Oh, where did I come from? I came from Arcadia. It's quite a bit different from here, we live in the sky. We have airships and things like that. It is so weird not to be able to be in the sky anymore...and sail them." She moved her hand behind her head and rubbed the back of her neck slightly. "This is seemingly fine, though, albeit very strange." She tapped her foot on the ground.

Arcadia. Sarah Jane hadn't heard of it before, so it was interesting to hear what life was like on this new planet. "Airships!" she said, beaming, as various types of possible airship design filled her mind, ranging from steampunk things like Luke had in one of his books to something more like the Valiant. "Do you never visit the ground?" she asked. "On my world, Earth, we have airships, but for travel only. We live on the land, and do a good deal of our travel on land, and by sea as well."

She thought for a moment beofre responding,"The ground as you call it is considered deep sky, it has a lot of pressure and nothing it down there with exception of bones, rubble and mud. The weather down there is difficult to get to as well, you would need a good vessel to venture there. Oh, airships? Wow. I didn't think anywhere else would have them!"

This girl's entire culture had sprung from living so high above the ground. Sarah Jane listened, fascinated, as Fina explained her world's concept of the ground. The Doctor would love hearing about all this.

She nodded at Fina's remark about Earth's 'airships.' "Well, we call them airplanes, rather than airships, but the concept is about the same, I'd bet," she said. "They fly above the cloud-line and make it far safer and faster to get to many places around the planet." She had to chuckle at the remark about the weather. "Where I'm from, England, is notorious for bad weather," she said, smiling. "But it really isn't all that bad. We do have days without rain and fog." She glanced at Cupil briefly. "I'd imagine you stay above all the clouds, so your weather patterns are a bit more stable than ours."

"We don't really live above the clouds per-sey, we live with them. We get unusual weather, large tornadoes and fog. There is a place under the yellow moon where there is always black clouds and lightning or rain, it never lets up. Kind of dismal...--It's kind of fast." She smiled.

"Aside from the tornadoes, it sounds quite a bit like England," Sarah laughed. "At least, what the tourists say England is like, especially for any sort of event." She shrugged. "It sounds fascinating, though. You'd never get bored looking at the sky in Arcadia."

Luke would probably have found it especially fascinating. He'd have tons more questions, enough to talk Fina's ears off for days and still not be satisfied. She felt a pang in her heart thinking about it. She hoped he'd be all right.
