It's not too late to protect your plants and gardens from snow and ice! A light dusting of snow won't do anything, but young, small plants can't hold the weight of much more than an inch of snow.

I like to spread a blend of bark chips, moss, straw, and leaves around the base of the plant as insulation--but not too high, because the stem will still need to receive moisture. In order to keep the top of your plants safe, you can use a cardboard box to cover them (removing it as soon as possible so they get light!) or a tarp weighed down at the ends. It's also a good idea to check out any young trees, especially if they lean heavily to one side naturally. Consider tying it to a nearby tree, so that the weight of the snow and ice don't cause the tree to snap. If it's safe, I think it's always a good idea to go out and shake snow and ice off of branches, so that you don't have a larger mess to deal with later.

Plant care is a year round job! And work in the winter results in a very flowering and fruitful spring and summer! (I couldn't help that, I'm so sorry!)

And how many of your plants need to be covered for winter, Elain?

Well, all of them! Because I want them to get as much sun as possible, but I have already placed the insulation!

[...]

Monday is a good day to cover them. That's when I'll do it!

Monday, hm? That seems rather specific from you. I'm on call for patrol on Monday, but I could help.

I know. But I try to listen to my feelings as much as possible, and something says do it Monday. So I will!

And you should do your errands that day, don't worry about me!

I think your sister would have some choice words with me if I chose to not worry about you, even if you said so.

Speaking of listening to one's feelings, you should do that, about your Winter Solstice gift.

I am admittedly not an expert in plant care and Asgard never quite got the winters I believe we will be seeing here, if your post is any indication. I know of a garden that may need this sort of care and I am not entirely sure how to begin going about it.

There have been a few people who have seen something coming, I'm just adding to that! I don't mind looking at it! It might take me some time to figure out what is actually growing there? If you don't know and if they aren't plants I'm familiar with--there are quite a few that overlap, actually, which is very nice! But sometimes if a place is transported, like Skyhold is, their plants are unique to them.

It is a place like that, yes. The plants are protected and nurtured in a sense by magic but my magic does not tend towards protecting things from ice or protection in general - I am able to help them, but I fear that the winter may be too much for them to bear.

Of course. It's a garden of flowers and bushes, I'm assuming? I'm happy to take a look and make some suggestions! Gardening is my favorite thing, I think every time we grow something, the world becomes a little more beautiful.

The palace is where I was born in my world. I know nothing about taking care of plants. If Loki thinks it's a good idea for you look at them, he's probably right.

Yes. They are not from my world, specifically, as I see Torunn has informed you - in my world they were the gardens of Frigga, my mother. I presume they are the same here as they feel similar to her magic did and I have no reason to suspect anybody else would have gardens such as these. There are books describing the flowers and their properties that I would not mind finding for you.

I'd like that! At least to be able to say this is what you have and this is how they should be maintained. Magic will certainly do it for you, but I think there's something special about feeling the dirt in your hands and watching something you've cultivated grow.

For as long as I can remember, really! I've always liked working the ground and making something beautiful appear. Even when we didn't have much, it was always a way to make things brighter.

I’ve lived in cities my whole life. Dense ones. I had a flower box at my window but that’s about it. You’ve lived somewhere with gardens, then?

Either because they've naturally been there or because I made them! Sometimes I have a plan, sometimes I just let the land speak for itself and surprise me. Which isn't meant to be a lesson! Just a comment. Did you get your emergency supply of the pumpkin spice pies?

I didn’t take it as a lesson, so much as experience talking. And yes, my freezer is filled with an embarrassment of pies. Some of us are surrounded by flowers and plants, others seek out alternative proliferations.
