It does make sense, and I think I know what you mean.

Up until about a year and a half ago, good surprises just weren't things that happened. Though I'll confess that "surprise, your boyfriend has been sent back to his terrible home where he's far more likely to die a violent death with no memory of you" just about tops the list of bad surprises.
