“Kellach? Is that really you, man?”
Adventure, it seemed, had ways of finding Kellach no matter the situation. But, he was the hero type (even if he himself didn’t think so), so it really shouldn’t come as a surprise that he was among those who ended up getting transported ten years into the future. At first the idea was kind of exciting. Much of that excitement vanished when Kellach saw what the future actually held. 2023 had been bright and busy and loud, but full of things that often made Kellach stare in wide-eyed, childlike wonder. 2033 was nothing like that. The world was dark and dying. Fear and distrust permeated the air like gas.

He found himself at the Outpost where he’d met a handful of people he’d known in 2023. This world had changed all of them in one way or another and it made Kellach uneasy, reminding him of the visions he used to have in Perth. He was determined to do his part to prevent this future from happening…if that was even possible.

Leon hadn’t paid much attention to The Plan. He and Revy had stepped away from the majority fo the Outpost years ago, had taken to living out in the world by themselves, avoiding Interitus’ patrols and hunting for themselves and the crew that lived on Darla. The crew that was one short when Adam had been killed the month before.

He hadn’t given up hope. Not really. But he’d given up hope that there was anything that someone like him could do. He’d never really had powers, unless someone included talking to animals as one, and that skill had failed to be reliable years ago. He had his little magic bracelet from his time in the Murder Mansion that had given him superstrength, but that was was also useless, and he’d given it up when he’d left Vallo City.

Regardless, when the call had gone out that every Outlander was expected back at the Outpost to start their final gambit, Leon had gone. He knew the basis: people were coming from the past. But he hadn’t paid much attention after that. Leon had been lucky, he knew that. Almost everyone he’d cared about had managed to make it. Catra and Adora, and their kiddo, Finn. Henry and Yelena. Revy. He tried not to dwell on the losses. He couldn’t if he wanted to survive.

He couldn’t if he didn’t want to end up like Adora.

So, when he caught sight of Kellach in the mulling crowd of new arrivals, he almost couldn’t believe it. He felt his mouth go dry. Maybe he should have prepared himself a little better.

“Hey, I’ll be right back,” he told Revy, and then pushed through the crowd.

“Kellach? Is that really you, man?”

Kellach recognized the voice calling to him and turned to greet him, incredibly thankful that his friend had made it to the future, but his voice hitched at the back of his throat when he caught sight of Leon for the first time. He looked…not old necessarily, but definitely older. That in of itself shouldn’t have been a surprise so much as it was how this future was aging people. Kellach was going to have to get used to that.

He was still happy to see his friend and after a split second of taking in his appearance, that happiness cut through. “Leon!” He exclaimed, happily, reaching out to clasp Leon by the hand. “I be happy to see ye, again, mate!”

Leon took Kellach’s hand, then pulled him in so he could hug him with his other arm. He knew, perhaps, that he held the hug a little longer than he should have, but it took him a moment to talk himself into letting him go.

“So, that was a bit of a shit-show when you arrived, huh? A nice warm Welcome to the Future,” he said, when he managed to release him. “Hope you’re read to help dig us out of some grade A shit.”

Kellach wasn’t expecting the hug and he stumbled into it with surprise. It had been a long time since anyone was happy enough to see him to want to hug him. Things must have been more horrible in the future than Kellach thought for Leon to want to embrace him so tightly.

“Aye,” he said once Leon had let him go and Kellach had recovered. “They warned us what was happening, but I wasn’t expectin’ ta go inta battle straight away.” Kellach frowned. “I guess I shouldna been surprised, though.” The frowned darkened. Kellach did not like running away, but he liked going up against foes without much preparation either.

Leon frowned. “We were prepared for a confrontation over it,” he said after a moment. “It took a lot of magic to bring you guys here, and Interitus is drawn to that shit. Even small amounts of it. We weren’t expecting them to show up so soon though.”

Leon thought that it had likely caught everyone off guard, even the people who’d organized it. Leon couldn’t know for sure. He hadn’t had much to do with the day-to-day running of the Rebellion in a long time. “Glad you made it through alright though. It’s good to have you back, even if it’s just for a little bit.”

“Aye,” Kellach nodded solemnly. “An’ I be happy t’ see ye alive still, Leon. Ye an’ everyone else.” He nodded to those milling around the outpost. “Though…a lot fewer than I woulda hoped…”

His attention moved back to the other man in front of him, his frown moving from solemn to curious. “Interitus,” he said slowly, as though testing the word out as he spoke it. “They mentioned ‘im before, but I donnea know the name. I’m still too new, I reckon. Who is he, Leon? What does he want?”

“A lot fewer,” Leon confirmed. He reminded himself that he’d been lucky. He’d lost few of the people he cared deeply about. It was still too many. For himself. For everyone here. “Some people we think got sent home. Others have fallen under Interitus’ control.” But still, too many of them had been killed. He swallowed. “He was in Vallo once before I arrived here,” he said after a moment. “Not long before I arrived here, I don’t think. Catra and Adora had fought him before. As for what he wants…” he shrugged. “If he wants anything more than all the magic in this universe at his disposal, and to rule over Vallo then I don’t know about it. Some of the guys up top think that once he has enough power, he’ll be able to destroy all the versions of Vallo he doesn’t control in whatever timeline he wants.” He shrugged. “Honestly, me and mine have just been trying to get by these last few years. I know the guys here at the Outpost are still researching things, still trying to figure out how to beat him but…”

But that wasn’t what Leon did. He’d never been the save the world type. It wasn’t that he’d lost hope, not like Adora had. If the folks in the Rebellion could beat Interitus, then they would. But Leon was content with letting them figure it out. He wanted to spend his time taking care of the people he loved. Roaming Vallo with Revy, hunting food for Catra and Adora and the kids. If the Rebellion thought he could do some good, then he’d do what was asked of him. But he left the big thinking to other people.

Kellach’s frown darkened. He didn’t know anything about timelines or other versions of Vallo -- all of that was far beyond what his limited education could understand -- But what he did know about was someone who sought power and control and who would stop at nothing to get it. Thinking about what this person had done over the last decade, the people who had died, the people who were under his control, made his blood run hot and fast.

“I understand,” he said. “I’m sorry ye’ve had to go through alla that. An’ I’m sorry wasn’t there t’ help.” He took a breath and squared his shoulders. “But I’m here now. We all are.”

Leon managed a thin smile, and clapped his hand to Kellach’s shoulder. He gave it a light squeeze. He wanted to tell Kellach to be careful and to stay safe, but he knew that wasn’t why he’d come to the future. “Thanks, man,” he said. And then, “I’m glad you came.”

“When alla this is done we should have a drink,” he said, returning Leon’s clap on the shoulder. “To celebrate our victory.”
