"Sweetheart, we're all surprised I'm in one piece," Harry said deadpanning so hard it almost hurt. "Especially me," he said meeting Murphy's eyes with a twinkle of amusement. Yeah, he was glad she was here, though he'd have preferred her in one piece. At least her sense of humour was unharmed, though, he fully anticipated a thump for pulling the 'sweetheart' card, if she had the will or the energy to complain.
Harry felt the power of her statement and nodded in agreement. "We can't get back, Karrin," he said as gently as he felt able, hoping to take some sting out of the words. "People do leave, but there's no pattern to it, just like there's no pattern to their arrival here. We will get home, at some point," he would make sure of it. For Michael, for Molly and for Maggie - especially for Maggie - he would get home, whatever it took.
Since he'd arrived here he'd spent a lot of time thinking about all the people he'd left behind, but when he followed the train of thought, he'd left a lot of them already, in one way or another. So long as they didn't find out he was gone, chances were he'd get away with it. Probably. Now Karrin was here it threw a whole lot of complications into the air, but they'd handle it, together. The way they dealt with all the other crazy in their lives.
When she took his hand he gave her a soft smile and a look that showed how very grateful Harry was for her understanding. "Thanks, Murph," he was able to manage. "It's just stuff, though, right?" and if he could convince himself of that he might actually get through this.
