Ignoring her familiar, Roz turned back on her heels and headed right back out the door. She needed that book for class, and the last thing she wanted was her notebook left in Vorerra hands, even if it wasn't anything past study notes and questions she still needed to find the answers to.
Back at the hotel in no time, she asked the concierge to point her in the direction of housekeeping. It would be easier to talk to them directly then wait for the front desk, which currently had a line, to get her things. Following the concierge's instructions, Roz quickly made her way to the back of the hotel, where the flow of guests stopped and a staff members coming and going took over. She flagged one of them down, explained where she was staying last night, and asked if her things had been recovered. Roz learned quickly that they would have been delivered to her, but since she was here now, could she maybe get them?
With instructions for Roz to wait where she was, the staff member excused herself and turned to go retrieve the missing items. But rather the remaining still, curiosity took over and Roz followed the staff member just a few steps into a back hallway. Staff members in various uniforms were coming and going at top speeds. The staff member she had spoken to had gone to the left, where she could hear more people talking. To the right was an empty hallway, that seemed turn right at the end. Roz checked over her shoulder to see if anyone was paying her any attention, before heading to the right, and peeking around the corner.
At first she only saw a another empty hallway, lined with a few large portraits that were similar in extravagance to the rest of the ones hanging in the hotel and and two office doors on either side. Nothing overly exciting. What did she think she was going find there anyway, some sort of room where Vorerra members plotted and planned?
Laughing at herself, Roz was about to turn back around when one of the paintings seemed to shimmer and blur. It wasn't the first time she had seen something like that. It meant there was some kind of illusion or glamor in place, and her Sight was catching it. Taking a few steps closer, Roz squinted and let her Sight see past the magic in place to what was really at the end of the hallway. It was not a large painting of a what was probably the Vallo forest like she originally thought.
It was an elevator. Still painted gold like most things in the hotel but simple looking compared to the ones in the lobby for guest use. An elevator behind a glamor. Shit, she really wasn't meant to be here. Time to go. Roz turned so fast she ran straight into a man who had managed to come up behind her without her noticing.
A series of images flashed into her mind as she stepped back, mumbling an apology for not watching where she was going. She recognized the images. The sanctuary, nighttime, a cage with a phoenix...someone was stealing a phoenix.
Shaking her head free of the vision and refocusing her eyes, Roz was now staring at a man who was staring back at her with a look of reproach. Well, crap. He was finely dressed, clearly wealthy. Middle aged, with an attitude that practically screamed Vorerra. The big guy behind him dressed in back was probably a bodyguard. "What are you doing back here?" He firs man demanded, eyes never leaving Roz.
"Sorry!" Roz said, putting on her best apologetic look. "I was staying here last night, and I forgot some items in my room. I came to get them from housekeeping. I was waiting for them and I got caught up looking at the art on the walls. I guess I wondered further than I thought." She couldn't tell if the man believed her or not. Roz was about to open her mouth to keep talking, maybe if she rambled on enough he'd get bored, when someone else approached from behind the men block Roz's path.
"Miss?" It was the staff member she had spoken to about her things. Roz could have hugged her for having perfect timing. "I have your things." she held out Roz's notepad and book, but did not move. It didn't look like she was wanting to get any closer to the man who Roz had pumped into.
"Thank you!" She hoped she didn't sound too relieved. "Sorry again. I should pay more attention." she said to the man, before carefully side stepping around him. Roz was about to reach for her items when the man cleared his throat, calling her attention back to him. "I suggest the next time you forget something here," he gave her a look that said he doubted there would be a next time, she clearly did not fit the hotel audience, "you call the front desk. Your items will be delivered."
Roz collected her things from the lady, holding them close to her stomach with crossed arms. "Right. Sorry, I really need them for school. I guess I kind of panicked. I won't happen again." Roz took another step back, quickly thanked the staff member who had helped her, and then retreated out of the back hallways toward the lobby, keen on getting out of the hotel as quickly as possible.
Now what?
