WHO: Margo Hanson & Kady Orloff-Diaz
WHERE: Vallo Forest then Morningside Apartments
WHEN: June 19th, 2021
WHAT: Kady and Margo go on a stakeout.
WARNINGS: Gun Injury
It was supposed to be a simple stakeout. Cindy Featherbottom had a supposedly rare phoenix hidden away and Margo’s crew was going to steal it. At least, once they had a better idea about the security measures that Cindy had in place. It was why she had taken Kady with her to go observe the illegal exotic zoo that Ms. Featherbottom kept hidden away deep in the forest. Kady was, frankly, the most competent member of the crew. Sure, everyone had their own specialities, but Kady was the one who kept it professional and knew what the fuck she was doing all of the time. Her plans had contingencies upon contingencies, and honestly, if Margo had been with any of the other members of the crew on this one, she would have had to fight the urge to flirt with them or, in Eliot’s case, gossip the whole time. So Kady it was. They weren’t the bestest of friends, but she did appreciate having her around. “So this is the guard change I had been telling you about,” Margo explained, from where they were observing the little compound from around 25 meters away. They were up in a cosy little tree, hidden away from the world with magic. “And, as you can see, they clearly have guns. Still haven’t figured out what kind of magical firepower they have though.” Kady had been observing the setup since they had gotten themselves into the tree. It was far bigger than anything they had dealt with so far, with more guards than the last one she’d been involved in. She’d been making mental calculations of how to get into various vantage points that she’d seen so far, taking some pictures to be able to look at later on as well. This wasn’t something they would want to hastily hit because Margo was right, there was definitely going to be some kind of magical firepower involved as well. Plus there were animals and that kind of shit always added to the headache of any heist job. Animals moved, they alerted others that someone new was shuffling around or where they shouldn’t be. She wanted to know what kind of animals were inside because that could alter a few ideas she had stirring around in her brain as well. “We should try and get something to head that way.” Kady nodded toward the front entrance. “Some sort of animal that we can spook and steer in that direction.” It should tell them a little more about what they were dealing with. Margo had dealt with guards with guns before, on that first heist in Vallo, but she had all the information that time. Seducing a security guard at one of the cottage parties had been easy enough and he hadn’t even realized she had been milking him for information, too caught up in the attention of a pretty woman who seemed to be into him. With a little memory erasing and some glamour, all he would have remembered was hooking up with a hot blonde and nothing else. This time though, they were out in the field, getting the information themselves. Shifting a little in the tree for a more comfortable position to see where Kady was nodding toward, Margo raised her eyes. “Do you mean now? To see what the guards will do?” “I mean unless you want to come back and try this again soon before we do the actual job, yeah, now.” They needed information and the more of it they could get the better off they’d do with the actual job. The last thing Kady wanted was anyone getting hurt and this one currently had too many variables that would lead to that happening. Maybe it would be better to have a few more of the team there with them to help see what was happening, but Kady figured adding in any of the others would ultimately lead to trouble. Especially if certain ones were added. It was just another variable to account for. “I bet we can get a deer to head this way easily enough.” “Alright, what do you need me to do?” Margo had no problem giving up the lead when the situation called for it and the situation definitely called for it because she was more of a blunt hammer when it came to approaches, while Kady was more finely tuned about information gathering. Not that she couldn’t be a complete wrecking ball when she wanted to be, but she was versatile in a way Margo was not. It wasn’t long before they got the deer going toward the front entrance, drawing attention from the guards. As they moved that way, Margo and Kady split up to move around the complex to test weak points around the compound. Kady stuck toward the front at first, wanting to get a detailed viewing of how exactly the guards there reacted to any sort of threat. Realistically she’d have wanted enough people to look at all areas simultaneously so they could get a better handle on how everything worked all over. Magic was being used but there was technology too, some sort of silent alarm system that alerted the guards when the deer had approached about two hundred meters out. There were cameras that would need to be disabled or altered and a fancy laser system that seemed to stun the creature when it got past the one hundred meter mark. Fun. She headed back around the side, intent on meeting up with Margo at the rendezvous spot. Margo had started at the back and had collected what information she could about the system they seemed to have in place. She had popped in her fairy eye and that had given her a better look at the magical shit they had in place that normal human eyes couldn’t see, but there was still some sort of alarm system that was purely electronic that she didn’t know much about and wouldn’t, until they got an expert to look into it. She was just about to turn around head back to meet Kady, when she heard a twig snap behind her. Spinning around, her eyes got wide. “Oh shi-!” She was cut off by the sound of a gun firing. Kady hurried when she heard the gunfire, knowing there was no way that could be good. So much for managing this without being spotted. There weren’t any other animals in the vicinity of the place and since she wasn’t the one being fired at she knew Margo had to have been spotted. A few hand movements later and she was blasting the guards back, not particularly caring about laying low any longer as she got to where Margo was. “How fucked are you?” Margo, who had been laying on the ground in shock, had a hand pressed against the gunshot wound on her side. “I think it’s just a graze,” she said, feeling a little numb, as her body was flooded with all sorts of hormones in response to getting shot. “Would have been more fucked if you hadn’t gotten here that quick,” she said, struggling to sit up and then stand. “That guy’s buddies are going to be heading this way, so we should probably head out.” They really needed to add a teleporter to their little gang. Or learn one of the teleporting spells that others seemed to so easily use in Vallo. It wouldn’t take too long to get to the car they had stashed though. Hopefully it hadn’t been made. Kady helped Margo lean against her if she needed, wanting to get the two of them as far away from the area as quickly as possible. Graze or not, they were going to need to get that looked at. And then get the car cleaned if she bled in it. Kady shrugged off her jacket once they were at the car and tossed it to her. “Use that.” Piling into the car as she pressed the jacket to her side, Margo leaned back against the headrest and closed her eyes. Every single bump was going to feel like shit and the adrenaline was going to wear off soon. Margo started to mentally prepare for it. “Gotta place I can go to get this healed,” Margo said, once they were on their way away from the exotic zoo. “The healer’s legit and she’s not the type to blab,” she added, as she flinched when a turn had her shifting weird. There was no way to drive gently through the damn forest. Once they hit the city it would be a little easier and she didn’t want to peel out or give anyone reason to remember the car in the area. Good thing it was being ditched that night anyway. Still needed to ensure it was cleaned as best they could. But okay, good. A healer was definitely going to be needed. “Are you able to give me directions or do I have to guess where I’m going?” She had been to Wen Qing’s apartment exactly once, after a healing session. She tried to recall the apartment number and gave it to Kady then. “Morningside Apartments. Gonna have to go in the back way, but that’s where she lives.” It was a good thing Margo could remember that much because her vision started to blur. She reached over the console to hold out something to Kady. “Grabbed this, by the way.” It was a bloody bullet. “Wasn’t going to leave my blood behind for them to track us. Gotta get rid of that.” God, this was ridiculous. They should have brought more people with them once they’d seen the amount of security being used. Or not split up at all. Ugh, the should’ves were the worst. She took the bullet, pocketing it. At least it seemed to have gone through, that was good, right? It didn’t take long to get to Morningside once Kady had a destination in mind. Parking in the back, she headed around the car to help Margo out of it, hopeful that they wouldn’t be spotted by anyone while they were heading into the apartment. Did the place have cameras? They’d have to figure out the camera situation later because Margo was fading fast. “Hey, think I’m gonna pass out,” she slurred, right before doing exactly that. Oops? Sometimes even the best ops went to hell. Kady let out a sigh, trying to hold onto Margo and maneuver her toward the apartment she needed to get her to. She was seriously too old for this shit. |
