WHO: Nyx Barnes-Ulric and Bucky Barnes-Ulric
WHERE: Ancient Vallo: Forest
WHEN: May 1st, 2021 (Backdated)
WHAT: The Barnes-Ulrics find themselves in ancient Vallo and, so far, it's not so bad.
WARNINGS: N/A
Really… it could have been worse. Nyx missed their house and he missed the ease of modern living, but so far no one had gotten severely injured and like most things with Vallo he was - relatively - inclined to believe it would right itself before long. And it sure as hell wasn't nearly as bad as the snowglobe and his husband was with him. Which, at the end of the day, was the thing that mattered the most really. Besides, it wasn't as though Nyx had never roughed it before in his life. Despite embracing the conveniences of modern life in some aspects, Galahd before the invasion had still been a wild land. His childhood was one of being outside from dawn until dark. And, conveniently, learning to hunt the land. The smaller boar type creature he'd hunted he had broken down. Some cooking in a makeshift pan on the open flame for their dinner, and some strung up higher above the flame to dry into jerky for later. All in all he figured they'd have enough to get them through a few days easily. Nyx poked at the embers with a stick and looked over at Bucky. "I think we could use another log - mind grabbing one?" he asked. It could have been worse, but it also could have been better. Because Vallo loved messing with them, when Nyx and Bucky had found themselves back in the past with nothing but journals to communicate with the others, they had also found themselves one arm short of two pairs between them. The arm from Wakanda had not made the trip. And while Bucky was far from helpless like this, it did make things a bit trickier. Which was why he didn’t have any complaints about Nyx taking over, That, and well, it was kind of hot watching his husband chop the wood they were using for the fire and take down the boar-like creature they were currently cooking. At Nyx’s request, he reached over to the pile that had been freshly chopped earlier that day and threw in a log that took a moment, before catching fire. “So what’s the plan?” He asked, scratching the dimple in his chin, as he gave their camping grounds another visual perimeter check. Bucky had roughed it plenty of times with the Howling Commandos back in the day and he hadn’t exactly lived a life of luxury after that, so he wasn’t complaining too much about the lack of facilities at their disposal. Not yet, anyway. He was definitely going to miss their bed though, later. Even without the metal arm, Nyx knew Bucky was more capable than most. That still didn't make it a situation he would have chosen for his husband though, not by a long shot. But they'd get through it. They always did. Nyx poked the makeshift pan into the ideal spot to finish cooking and then settled back to sit on a larger log near the fire. "Eat? Pack up the jerky, figure we can hunker down over there," he nodded towards a spot where there was some decent ground cover - close enough that keeping the fire going should keep them warm enough once dark hit. "But right now… get over here," he said and flashed Bucky a grin as he moved to straddle the log, patted the spot in front of him. Once Bucky sat in front of him Nyx raked his fingers through Bucky's hair and then started to braid it from the top. "Maybe make our way to something a bit more civilized in the morning?" He suggested as he braided. Not that he was entirely opposed to roughing it in the middle of nowhere for a few days, but there was something to be said about safety in number It had taken a bit to get used to being one armed again, but Bucky had adjusted enough that he didn’t look completely goofy as he stood up and walked over to where Nyx was sitting. He smiled as he sat down, turning to face away from his husband so that he could get his hands on his hair properly. Normally he was able to do up his own hair no problem, enough to keep it out of his face, but it was definitely more enjoyable to have Nyx do this for him. There was no denying that he was domesticated. “Yeah, we’ll hunker down for the night and get there in the morning. You’re probably going to need to climb a tree to figure out what direction we need to go in so we’re not wandering aimlessly.” No one needed to see Bucky try to climb a tree right now. “I’m just worried about who hasn’t checked in yet.” Thankfully, Sara and Caroline had organized check ins to make it more streamlined. His fingers moved easy, practiced, as he pulled more strands into the growing braid on the top of Bucky's head. It was something Nyx had vivid memories of his mom doing for his dad before he would go on hunts, until the hunt he didn't come back from. Or afternoons when either he or Selena would sit at their mom's feet patiently as she worked intricate designs into their hair. The braid he did now was simple, but still brought up the same feelings of warmth, caring… home - even if they were far from it right then. "I'd offer to shove you in the armiger and warp you up high with me, but given I can only get one thing out of there right now it seems like a bad plan," he said with a soft laugh. "Maybe start out by that river we passed?" Water seemed like a good place to start, if someone were to build up a town it'd be better off near a source of water. He took a moment to hold the end of the braid in one hand, loosened the braided leather strap around his wrist with his teeth and used it to tie off Bucky's hair. "We can reach out to Sara in the morning if you want, see how many still haven't, see if anyone's got ideas where to start looking." It was useful having a partner that had access to the magic that he did normally - but situations like this, well, Bucky agreed with Nyx when it came to not risking it when there were other ways to get what they needed done. He merely returned the laugh at the thought of being shoved into the armiger and leaned back into the press of Nyx's nimble fingers. God, there was something about the way he did his hair that had Bucky feeling warm and loved all over. "Mm, sounds as solid of a plan as we're going to get," Bucky said, reaching back with his one hand to squeeze Nyx's thigh. "I'm glad we're stuck doing whatever this is together." Nyx leaned forward somewhat to drop a soft kiss to the side of Bucky's neck and then let his chin rest on Bucky's shoulder. His arms wrapped around his husband's torso and despite it all, it was kind of nice. Be nicer if they had an endpoint. But he wasn't about to dismiss a quiet moment with his husband either way. "Much better than the last time Vallo decided to do the relocation thing," he added. At least this time around Bucky had been in eyesight when he'd woken up somewhere else entirely. "I know shit is kind of crazy, but I vote that we let the rest of it wait until tomorrow and enjoy an unexpected night of roughing it under the stars," Nyx suggested, a smile that Bucky could probably feel against the side of his neck. "No work, no phones - no kids…" not that the goats really required much after dark but it was still a responsibility and a check in before heading to bed. Sighing as Nyx got all up close and cuddly, Bucky smiled. “It’s kind of nice to be disconnected. We can pretend we’re actually out camping on purpose.” And none of that glamping bullshit that Sam was so fond of. Honestly, give him the stars over a fancy tent any day. Especially if he was with Nyx. Though of course when his hair started to get greasy, he was going to be singing another tune. “But yeah, we can give it a day and take it easy while we figure out what to do next. I mean, I have a big strong hunter for a husband, so we should be good for food anyway,” Bucky teased, turning his head to nip at any point he could reach on Nyx’s face. Nyx knew Bucky would have been fine on his own in the situation had they not been together. At least in terms of finding food and shelter. But that didn't stop a little flush of warmth at Bucky's words. It was nice though. Being able to provide for the person he loved, in a very literal sense of the word. He shifted so that he could kiss Bucky properly, a hand lingering on the side of Bucky's neck. "Almost romantic," he said with a smirk as he pulled back. Sure, actually having chosen to be in their current predicament would have been nicer, but he'd do the look on the bright side thing for now. "Just - hopefully not too easy?" he added with a pointed raise of his brows and leaned back in to kiss his husband again. |
