My extended family tends to trade the family shields and heirlooms about, depending on if someone's gone and decided they'd rather be pushing up daisies.
You can wire up the back of it like one would to hang a heavy mirror, but you have to use the proper wire gauge for it's weight. If it's incredibly heavy, you may need a stud finder (not being pervy!) to hang it, properly. Perhaps wall anchors (metal sort, most likely), if you're unable to find a the studs? Though that's probably recommended so it doesn't plop off your wall and end up on the floor.
Not sure if that helps answer the question, but I seem to remember an uncle going on about how to do that same thing. Maybe a handier person can help out with a better answer, or you can consult a hardware shop?
OR you could run about bashing people in the head with it.
