I still can't believe how many Starbucks you have. I'm pretty sure I saw them building a Starbucks across the street from another Starbucks. I like coffee, but I mean why.

The perception of options is necessary for a society, I suppose. If you feel you have a choice, even if the choice has been clearly made for you in advance, you can be more confident that you are doing what you are supposed to do.

Personally, I don't like coffee, but when I do go out for a London Fog, I try to go to one of those more family-run businesses. Sure, they're pricier -- worth it though.

You know, it's actually their business model. Since Starbucks is corporate run and not franchise run, if an individual store loses money it's not going to hurt the bottom line. They oversaturate the market so that smaller businesses do go under, and then once they're just in competition with themselves they close down the extra shops.
