Being English, I always celebrated Guy Fawkes Night moreso than Halloween. I'm curious, would any fellow Brits, or anyone else here, be interested in a Guy Fawkes Night celebration? There may not be a life-sized effigy of Guy Fawkes to burn, but there will at least be a smaller one. Food and so forth will also be provided if anyone is interested in coming.

For those who don't know, Guy Fawkes Night is November 5th.

Were you thinking a more public setting for this or private?

I may be interested! It would be nice to do something that's from home.

I'm Mary, by the way! Where are you from?

More public. I managed to get a permit for a park to have this in.

It really would be. Halloween is nice, but I still do enjoy a good bonfire night more.

Hello Mary, I'm Evie. I'm from London. How about you?

It's a pleasure to meet you Evie!

I'm from London as well! It seems there is a fair few of us about.

I'll make sure to put it on my calendar, so you can be sure I'll be there!

There are quite a few of us about here. Sometimes it feels like I haven't left London because there's so many of us around.

Great! I look forward to seeing you there and meeting you in person!

Ha, I can understand that sentiment! Still, there's enough America here that I can separate most of the time.

I look forward to it as well!

There are. And the distance from my brother tends to quickly remind me that this isn't London.

He's back home?

I'm guessing the two of you are fairly close?

He is. He's never strayed far from London for very long.

We are. We're twins, though we're polar opposites. Some days I want to strangle him, but I still love him. He's the only family I have left.

Having been at boarding school in England for so long, I miss bonfire night now that I'm home, so I'd be down! Know a few friends that might feel the same, too...

Great! They are all of course welcome to come as well. The more the merrier, as they say.

Excellent, I'll be sure to mention it to them. Also, would this be family friendly? One of the parties has children, and I'm sure he'd love to show them something from his home. I'm Andromeda by the way, nice to meet you!

Of course children are more than welcome to come! I don't plan on doing anything bad, just nice, wholesome fun that can be enjoyed by everyone.

This sounds exciting, I'm so jazzed about the prospect! I haven't been to a proper bonfire night since I left boarding school, and that felt like a million years ago.

It will be a little less grand than what they do in London, but it will still be fun. Or at least I hope it will be fun for everyone!

No grand parades or marching a giant burning effigy through the streets here. That might be frowned upon in this country. I don't want anyone to get shot while we're trying to have fun.

So can I. But I'm trying to keep this to a dull roar and not run the potential of starting another wildfire.

Definitely not something you'd need to worry about. It seems that there's always someone who ends up setting up a bonfire night.

That's definitely reassuring. It's only fitting, really. Not all of us are Americans nor have we converted to only celebrating American holidays.

Who's Guy Fawkes?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]thesilentknife
2018-10-30 06:11 pm UTC (link)
He was an Englishman who lived in the last 16th Century and early 17th Century. In 1605, he and a group of English Catholics planned to kill King James I of England by blowing up the House of Lords when the King was giving a speech at the opening of Parliament. The plot failed, and he and the other plotters were arrested and executed for treason. The plot occurred on November 5th, so we've since celebrated the day by burning effigies of Guy Fawkes and parade them through the streets.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]thesilentknife
2018-11-01 03:32 am UTC (link)
There'll be a bonfire, a relatively small one because I don't want to start a wildfire on accident. We'll burn an effigy of Guy Fawkes, and there'll be food. Mostly traditional food we English eat, we cook potatoes and soup over the bonfire. There's cake, and roasting marshmallows. Though I may just do s'mores. Set up a couple games, things of that nature.

Why no life-sized one?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]thesilentknife

I'd rather not run the risk of potentially starting another wildfire. So keeping it smaller than life-sized might be better. I'd also rather not run the risk of any oblivious Americans think we're burning an effigy of the President or someone and get bent out of shape about it.

If you're looking for a place to have it: I can offer up my property. Lots of space, no oblivious neighbors causing problems and you won't have to worry about a wildfire since there's not much greenery around the pool area but there's plenty of space for a barbecue or whatever else.

[info]thesilentknife

Oh really? Is there a fire pit? Or something to use for building a bonfire? Not a huge one, but one big enough for burning an effigy and cooking some food over, like potatoes, soup and s'mores?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]whtctbastard
2018-11-02 12:19 am UTC (link)
There is a fire pit you can use and if you don't want to build it in there - there's plenty of space on the deck of the pool. All I'll ask is that it not be too close to the pool house. I'm pretty sure my architect wouldn't like seeing it damaged when we just finished it a couple of months ago.

I wouldn't dream of having the bonfire anywhere near the pool house. But thank you for your gracious offer. I'll be bringing the food and everything, and I promise to clean up after everyone's gone.

I'm Evie, by the way.

I'm Thomas. Nice to meet you.

Part of the reason I bought this place was so there could be parties - why not let other people use it for theirs? And don't worry about cleaning up. I can hire some extra people to come in and do that the next day.

It's a pleasure to meet you, Thomas.

I'll make certain that it's a good party. It wouldn't be any good to have the party be a dud. And thank you. Though I'll still make certain I do some cleaning. I hate leaving a mess behind.
