In the original play, they didn't end it with hinting they'd be an item at all, if I remember. It's something that was only added in the musical. And again, he says he is a confirmed bachelor and seems to have no desire towards her or women at all. And there's an entire song asking why women can't be like men... I mean, the song is kind of sexist from today's standards. But so is the character and the song is meant to show he's being an asshole. But the point still stands.
