That's it then.
The new Enterprise, NCC-1701-B, was ready for her maiden journey. Not really all that ready, it was supposed to be a short trip around the block. See if anything shook apart. But she had to respond to a distress call, with an untested captain, an untested crew, a gaggle of reporters and three legends past their prime.
She didn't even have any torpedoes on board.
There was some kind of energy ribbon, ripping two refugee ships apart. We saved the people on board one, but couldn't save the other, and the ship was badly damaged in the process.
The only hope was a hail mary, using the deflector array to blast us free. The captain barely hesitated, he left the bridge to me so he could go save his ship.
But it wasn't my bridge, it wasn't my ship. That wasn't my chair. That Enterprise was his and his ship needed him on the bridge.
I got below decks, managed to activate the array. The energy tore a hole in the side of the ship. The last thing I remember thinking was that there were worse ways to go.
Godspeed, Captain Harriman. May your Enterprise treat you as well as mine did.
