A tall ship and a star to steer her by ([info]starwreck) wrote in [info]valarnet,

My cliffhanger ended, it turns out my First Officer had to return to his planet to mate. We fought to the death because of some ancient rule or something. Luckily my CMO helped me fake my death, and it still counted.

I don't recommend fighting one of your best friends on a desert planet, when that best friend is as strong as four humans.

My shirts keep getting torn, I'm sensing a theme here.

Not content to let me rest, the dreams threw me into a situation against a planet destroyer. Watched a good man lose his mind, then his life, with an obsession to destroy it.

That sounds...really strange. Not that I can really judge.

I can see how the torn shirts would be a problem.

What's a planet destroyer?

It was a giant construct. It ate planets for fuel. It didn't matter if there were people on those planets.

We think it was some civilization's ultimate weapon. Like the atom bomb, only in their case it got used.

Oh. That sounds pretty awful.

It really was. He lost his crew and blamed himself.

That's really sad. I'm sorry he had to deal with that.

I'm not sure how comforting that's supposed to be.

His sacrifice showed us how to beat it without losing my ship and my crew. That's how a Captain should go out.

It's very hard watching someone lose their mind to an obsession. I'm sorry you went through that.

Officially, he'll be remembered as a hero. As for myself, that lesson is important.

The lesson to not become obsessed?

It's a hard thing to do. I mean, I don't think people want an obsession, but they might not be able to stop it.

What are the other lessons?

Custom, local law. I did technically die for a minute or so.
