My kid's response to my request for her to take a bath after dinner tonight: "Okay, but I should just take one in the ocean to save water."

Been in California for almost three weeks, and she's already focused on water conservation. So either she's adjusting just fine, or she's been watching way too much television.

Thank you! It wasn't at all what I planned to name her while I was pregnant, but then I saw her and I knew the name I picked was wrong, and Lily was right.

Manhattan. We're native New Yorkers.

Oh, no doubt. We just come from New York and it's not so much a problem there, so it's something that she's picked up since we moved.

I remember....

No, no it's not.... further south in Encinitas, there's a mural called the Surfing Madonna about bringing attention to water conservation and preserving the ocean....

Is there really? I'll have to take her sometime. It's definitely something she said to get to go swimming instead of taking a bath, but if we are going to live here long term then I think it's important that she, and I, do some acclimating.

Thank you, Annie.

(Private to Annie)
I'm sorry. I hope your life is better here than on the East Coast.

Yeah. Here's some more information about it. And I can appreciate wanting to swim. instead.

You're welcome.

[ADA Beckett]
It's okay, it's not your fault. And it is. Mostly

Thank you! Oh yes, she's always loved water, so having it right across the street has been great for her.

[Annie]
Even so. You deserved better. I'm glad to hear that.

So have I. Obviously. It's why I chose my apartment, it's right next to the beach.

[ADA Backett]
What happened happened, it's just trying moving forward now. This place has it's downsides, but overall it's been okay.

[info]katebeckett
2016-07-09 12:47 am UTC (link)
Understandable. I knew when I decided to move here that I wanted to be close to the beach, and I've really enjoyed it. It's relaxing, except maybe on the weekends when it's so crowded, but that's to be expected.

[Annie]
Oh, everywhere has a downside or two. Just part of life, I think.

Especially as it's summer now. I mean, you'll always have the surfers as well, but they tend to come more with the tides.

[ADA Beckett]
More or less, yeah.

[info]katebeckett

Certainly, but it's the trade off of choosing to live so close. So long as no one loiters near my yard, I'm okay with it.

[Annie]
Well, if you need anything, I'm happy to help. And no one need never know we've met before, so don't worry about that.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Basically. I've never had issues with loiterers, so you should be fine.

Thank you.

Oh, she jumped right in. The first day we got here and started moving in to our house Lily was begging me to stop unpacking and take her to the ocean, and I figured it'd be a good memory so I gave in. She's asked to go every day since.

How old is your son?

Your Lily sounds like an adventurous girl, certainly fearless if she dove straight in. How old is she?

John is seven, so he's old enough to have an opinion, but young enough that they don't always make practical sense.

[info]katebeckett

I wouldn't say fearless; she's scared of thunderstorms and isn't so keen on heights, but she's certainly got an adventurous spirit, which is actually wonderful. Or it is now. When she's a teenager, I'll have my hands full. My mother insists that its repayment for all the stuff that I did when I was growing up, which is probably true.

Lily is six, though she insists on telling people that she's six and a half. The half is a big deal.

Oh yes, I understand that all too well. I expect you, like me, spend a lot of time trying not to grin or laugh at what your son says.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]ashmaiden

Of that, I have no doubt. It always come back around, sometimes worse so I've been told. Hopefully she won't turn your hair prematurely grey.

Naturally, of course! That's just a half-step closer to being a grown up. And those halves come way too quickly.

I absolutely do. He gets very upset when he catches my amusement, and he doesn't like my answers as to why I find something funny. I feel like I should write everything down so he can laugh at them when he gets older.

Even if she does, I don't know that I'll mind. She's totally the best thing I've ever managed in my life.

Definitely. I still have a hard time believing that she's six. Seems like yesterday she was a newborn.

Oh, I have some videos. The benefit of a smartphone; I always have a camera in my pocket. When she gets married or graduates from high school, I should play them all for her to see.

I know exactly what you mean by that.

It goes by entirely too quickly. And it doesn't help when they fight you for every bit of leverage to get closer to being a grown up.

That is fantastic! I need to remember that trick for later. I feel like I will be drowning in videos very quickly.

Maybe she's thinking of the future, or maybe she wanted an excuse to go swimming.

Either way, she sounds like a smart kid.

Oh it's definitely the latter. She loved swimming before we ever moved here, and now that she has an ocean right across the street, it's all she wants to do.

Very smart. She's definitely the most perceptive six year old that I've ever met.

Swimming in an ocean is more fun than a pool.

Oh, certainly. I just realized this, but until we got here she had never been swimming in an ocean. Coney Island's water is just a bay and our house in the Hamptons was on the bay side rather than the Atlantic.

Mmm. Though if Lily were still awake she would insist that I tell you she's actually six and a half. Her birthday is at the end of November.

That half is very important at her age.

It's pretty great to be around and to look at, though I think I prefer a pool for actual swimming.

Oh, certainly. If she knew about fractions, she'd be talking about how she'll soon be six and 3/4's.

I actually enjoy it a lot, myself. Growing up in the city, you were a little limited in what all you could do, but my dad was a big outdoor guy. He loves to fish and he had a cabin upstate that belonged to my grandparents and we went there during the summer and sometimes over Christmas.

Oh, she is. She gets excited because her birthday is at the end of November, so its not so close to Christmas that she gets double-gifted, but close enough that It seems like two months full of presents.
