Victor Frankenstein has the soul of a poet. ([info]anewprometheus) wrote in [info]valarnet,

With my residency swiftly approaching, I've been attempting to finally organize my apartment and make sure I have everything I'll need. My chosen profession in pathology seems a bit more poignant these days.

Mostly, I wanted to share that, as I was going through my books, I found a copy of an old penny dreadful tucked away from there. Varney The Vampire. The sight of it makes me feel a bit sad, truth be told. If anyone happens to be curious, Project Gutenberg has it in their archive. Or at least some of it. I certainly know what I'll be doing with my night.

Sad for what reason?

I was just very fond of the old man who gave it to me.

That is understandable, then. But is it a penny dreadful you also saw in your dreams? I find them interesting anyway, from a historical standpoint.

It is. I find it sort of ridiculously fitting, really, given the nature of my dreams.

Oh, by the way, I spoke to my friend Vanessa about our dreams. Apparently, the Mina Murray we're looking for was, in fact, engaged to a Jonathan Harker.

Very fitting. Strikes a chord.

What-- So there's a version of me where you are too? That's so odd. And Mina is-- Is she safe from- Is Mina alright?

Apparently there is. Though I've not met him, and no one's ever brought him up. So far, the hunt continues. One of our companions keeps getting visions about where she might be, though.

That can never be a good sign, to be invisible. And now I'm going to worry about your Mina too.

It certainly doesn't look well for her.

I know she's not my Mina but still. I want her to not be all in...that.

I understand. Regretfully, no one in my dreams, ever, at all, gets to be momentarily happy. It's all one tragedy built upon another. If by chance she does get rescued, I'll be certain to let you know.

Tragedy befalls us all, I think. But thank you, I appreciate that.

Are things still quite tragic for you?

Quite.

They're just at a bad spot. It'll pass, as the story progresses.

Oh, they'll definitely get worse. I've no delusions about that. But I'm hoping I can function better in them rather than be in the state I am now.

I'll keep my fingers crossed, but you'll forgive me if I lack optimism.

I don't go to you for optimism anyway. I go to you for...weird advice.

It actually sort of does, believe it or not.

For the most part.

I'll wait for you to sort yours out next.

That's better than nothing.

I've absolutely nothing to sort out.

Now what in the hell kind of vampire name is Varney?

Really, Ethan.

Varney is the title character's surname, as it happens.

I'm just saying that I wasn't aware vampires had to fall under a certain category of names.

Well they should have intimidating names shouldn't they?

Varney sounds like a rodeo clown I worked with.

Ethan isn't particularly a winning name.

[info]anewprometheus

Because I've come to learn that you enjoy frustrating me.

How have you been feeling, by the way, since your last bout of illness?

Fit as a fiddle, more or less. It keeps hitting me that damn first week of the month, and I can't figure out why.

It's not entirely out of the norm, I suppose. Some illnesses have been known to reoccur. I think it might be beneficial to have a proper medical test done. Much as I enjoy our monthly house calls.

But a flu that shows up like clockwork once a month?

Contrary to what you believe, I'm not so fond of doctors.

[info]anewprometheus

Precisely. It can't simply be a flu, which is why you need to get proper medical attention.

Don't put up a fuss.
