I don't get this Valentine's Day thing. What is it and how do I avoid it?

I intend to drink a lot.

Is that what people normally do?

It's a day for couples to eat chocolates and buy stupid cards.

Ah. I will be staying at home then. That doesn't sound like fun.

It's not a holiday I've ever had occasion to celebrate. That never stopped my friend back home from trying to do things to cheer me up, but she isn't here.

Oh I know how that is. Though my friends are more likely going to try to make fun of me instead.

Depends on if you deserve it.

I don't know. They're assholes to everyone they meet.

Then it's time to plan revenge.

Revenge certainly is.

It's supposed to be a day for couples, I think. To show someone special in your life that you care for them.

I personally intend to take myself out to dinner and flaunt my independence.

Oh I see. That's interesting.

That sounds like a much better plan than any of that other stuff.

I'm not entirely sure where the tradition got started, myself, but here we are.

I take it it's not as big a holiday where you're from?

Someone else suggested the plan, actually, but it was too good an idea to pass up.

We have White Day. A month later in March. It's generally only done by women and completely ridiculous.

It's a good plan.

Do you mind my asking what goes on then? I find this kind of thing really fascinating!

Basically girls present chocolates to people that they're fond of, or socially obligated towards. Most of the time it's home-made and not commerical on Valentine's Day. But White Day is done by men. Sorry, I got confused for a moment. In any case if you get a gift from a woman, you're obligated to buy her a bigger present on White Day.

I understand that a great deal of Japanese culture has to do with social obligation and 'saving face', is that still true?

If it is, I feel like this tradition might have the tendency to get overly complicated and escalate quickly.

Not as much as it used to be, I think but yeah. There's still a lot of the population that still lives that way.

Like you wouldn't believe.

I think days to show someone you care are a silly thing, anyway. You should show someone you care every day, anyway.

It shouldn't be about obligation, at least.

I agree.

It definitely seems no more than that.

One Valentine's day I woke up in bed with three men, two women and a turkey.
