Even the most cynical of critics has to allow that a health insurance company tends to refuse to authorize payment for most procedures that result in the patient's death, so... at least in theory... worrying about keeping the patient stable before worrying about health insurance status is probably more cost-effective for the hospital than letting people die while waiting to see if their health insurance might cover emergency treatment.
The rest of us can rest assured in the reminder that most clinicians actually do care.
