Professor Mordin Solus never shuts up. ([info]hadtobeme) wrote in [info]valarnet,

Apartment broken into last night. Television and laptop taken. Fortunately, laptop's data backed up onto cloud drive. Still, had to spend day talking to police and cleaning up broken glass. Unpleasant.

Could use distraction. Perhaps La Bohème this weekend at the LA Opera.

I'm sorry to hear that, Professor. Some people just do not understand the meaning of personal property.

Suspect they understood meaning, just chose to disregard it. Disappointing but common.

Why didn't you call? Could have helped with the glass, at least.

Doesn't make a lot of sense, does it?

Nonsense. Know you have patients and busy schedule. Perfectly capable of handling things myself.

Senseless but again, common. And easily fixed. Nothing truly of value lost.

Can you get another laptop?

Indeed. Irritating, not difficult. Will probably shop tomorrow.

Good. Anyone who can have a laptop, should.

Agreed. Necessary for profession. Teaching and grading almost impossible without computer access.

Your answer to this is to watch an opera about people living in poverty?

Hadn't really considered irony. Mostly, just enjoy music. Maybe plot will induce feelings of sympathy for thieves, rather than anger. Much healthier emotionally.

I'm quite impressed with your ability to let things slide off your back.

Unfortunate incidents bound to happen sometime. Best not to let them shake work ethic. Also statistically unlikely to be robbed again. Comforting.

Well it's good to have such a positive outlook.

Positive outlook has positive effect on work. Less likely to become frustrated. More efficient.

Do you ever speak in complete sentences?

On occasion. Usually find it unnecessary. Can be understood perfectly fine without excess words. Allows faster communication of information.

You sound like a robot.

Ridiculous. Current robotic intelligence far beyond stilted speech. Would only sound like fictional portrayals of robots, if anything.

That's the comparison I was aiming for.

Ah. Possibly apt comparison, then. Fatal flaw in some fictional robots is programming for efficiency, lack of empathy.

Are you lumping yourself in with them?

Only in terms of efficiency in language. Believe empathy has a place in the biological world. Separates us from many other species.

Believe altruism serves evolutionary purpose as well. Helping others of species survive helps continue survival of species as whole.

That's certainly a logical conclusion to make.

Oh dear, I hope they catch whoever did it and you manage to get it back.
