Perhaps it's merely insecurity; when I go to a mechanic, I'm forced to put my trust in someone else's knowledge. My control over the situation is gone and I can't change my disadvantage.
I imagine it's similar for your patients. You have a more intimate biological understanding of their body than they do and their body is so personal to them. It's like you know what's under the floorboards of their house without ever having visited it.
