I don’t want to end up attacking anybody
Who: Jubilee and Mavis
What: Vampires meet, and Jubilee gives tips!
When: ⅚
Where: Some place!
Status: complete
Rating: Pg-13 for discussion of blood, being dead inside, and nomming on people

Mavis had taken Lorna’s suggestion and introduced herself to Jubilee, to try and learn about herself and others like her. Other dreamers, other vampires; people her own age. She had Nikola, but she knew that the more people she had to support her, the less likely she was to go off the rails. She was doing okay so far, but she knew she’d have to do more than just okay.

So she waited for Jubilee.

There were parts of Jubilee that had embraced being a vampire. The speed, the strength, the ability to turn into mist, even a bat. It was a mist that swept up around Mavis' feet, only to form into a short chinese girl, with pink sunglasses, a yellow jacket, and far too big of a grin. “Yo!”

Mavis just stared, blinking as the mist transformed into a person. She didn’t yet know that she would be able to do something similar, and she was just getting to know the strange, awesome, and sometimes scary things that could happen in the OC. “Hi! Wow. How long did it take you to get the hang of that trick?”

“Like four months, maybe five. Took me awhile to get stronger too.” She flexed her biceps and giggled. “So I got some benefits. Can’t get sick for nothing now! Unless I try to eat human food. Which I do ‘cause I miss candy.”

“Aw, I’m sorry you had to give up so much,” she said, “I really shouldn’t complain. It’s just a lot to get used to, all of a sudden.” She sighed, but there was a tiny smile tugging at the corners of her mouth, flashing a hint of her fangs. She still had to be careful not to bite her own tongue. “So I guess I’m gonna be eighteen forever, huh?”

"It really is. Can't ever compete in gymnastics again, would be cheating and crap." She pushed her glasses up, peering at Mavis' teeth curiously. Her eyes glowed red. She thought the girl was cute. "Yeah, probs. But you could pass for 21 with the right ID...would start bein' weird once you're supposed to be like...26 or something!"

Mavis smiled, and shrugged her shoulders. She figured she had one of those babyfaces that would have had people carding her well into her twenties anyway, so she didn’t mind that so much. She supposed she’d appreciate it eventually. “So...anything else I should brace for, or will I just have to wait for the next go round of dreaming?”

It wasn't like Jubilee didn't get carded every time, so she totally understood. She rubbed the back of her neck, tilting her head all the way to the side. "Well.. If it's anything like me...the cravings get worse and worse, an' if you ignore them...well I kind of attacked a friend....Not Lorna, though. She was my first volunteer."

“I don’t want to end up attacking anybody,” she said, “I think it’s just a mental thing that I’m going to have to get past. Becoming carnivorous, or whatever. I’m not quite sure where to start.”

Jubilee patted around in her pocket, then pulled out a cold bottle. It was plastic and black. She pulled out another. "In the black one it's like..cow or something, and the other is a person. I know it's probably really squicky for you but you need to get acclimated to it before you reach a point where you might hurt someone. An'...okay her blood is amazing, so I'm dipping into my stash, since I can't nom on her all the time." Even if Laura did have a healing factor.

“Even bottled, it’s amazing?” Mavis asked, arching her brows in curiosity. Yes, she’d seen movies and TV shows with snooty vampires who poo-pooed anything that didn’t come straight from the vein. “Maybe I better try the steak-in-a-bottle first.”

She tried not to cringe and grimace. Eating a steak was one thing, but drinking straight blood? “I’ll just...pretend it’s tomato juice...or something.”

“Yeah, you do that. Which you wanna try? One is sweeter than the other, I won’t tell you which!” Better to go in blind.

Mavis sighed. She had a feeling that there wasn’t going to be any way to convince herself that she was drinking V8 Splash. But she could always wash it down with one after, if she had to. “The steak, please.” She couldn’t think of it as cow. It wasn’t cow anymore, the cow was gone; it was just...Moo Juice. “Okay, Mavis. Time to suck it up.”

Why, yes. Vampire puns. Bite her.

She handed Mavis the black bottle. “Try little sips at first. I dunno if you need it to survive just yet, but you’ll have a better shot than I did!” She leaned against the wall and tried to smile reassuringly.

Mavis took the bottle, and took a tiny sip before she could chicken out. It did not taste like tomato, no matter how hard she tried to visualize the fruit. But at least she managed not to gag like she thought she would. She sighed, still looking a little miserable. “Do you ever get used to it?”

Jubilee shrugged a shoulder, and gave Mavis a sympathetic look. "Yeah. You do. I'm not really sure that's something that you really want to hear. The getting used to it thing. You even start to....like it." At least she did. Loved it really, at least when it came to Laura. She couldn't get enough of her, she just had to act in moderation.

"If your vampires are anything like mine, you might have to fight the killer instinct."

"Mm. Yeah." Mavis grimaced. "Pretty sure the name Dracula comes with killer instinct. But that shouldn't negate my own personality, should it?" She hoped not.

“Dracula?” She stared at Mavis, a little slack-jawed. “Like the Dracula?? I got bit by his son, yo!” She grinned, though there was no emotion behind it. There was another thing that she hoped that Mavis’s vampires didn’t experience. She generally felt as though she were dead inside, except in certain moments with certain people. It was a real drag.

“As far as I can tell, it’s the Dracula, and I’m his daughter,” Mavis said, nodding. “And apparently I was born this way, not bitten. Don’t ask me how that even works, but whatever. I’m trying to ignore all the mixed up legends and learn as I go.”

“Yanno, I dunno if he was born or made...” Jubilee shrugged. She suppose it didn’t matter. “That kinda makes us weird sisters, if you think about it! It also gives me a headache thinking about it...” She laughed, and held out the sweeter bottle of Laura’s blood. “Ready to try this?”

“Oh, god,” Mavis said, “Let’s not think too hard.” That was just strange. But kind of cool. “I always wondered what it would be like to have a sister.” When the next bottle was offered, she bit her lip nervously--and jumped at the sting of a sharp canine nicking her lip. She ran her tongue over the spot, but it healed almost instantly.

“I guess I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.”

Jubilee nodded, grinning to herself. "It'll be awesome. Better to do it now then like...vomit over your girlfriend or boyfriend, right??"

“No worries there, since I don’t have either to vomit on,” Mavis quipped, laughing just to ease the tension that she felt creeping up between her shoulder blades. “Yet. But yeah. That would be awkward.” Probably not any more awkward than if she threw up all over Jubilee right now, but at least Jubilee might be able to dodge.

“Really? We gotta find you a someone.” Jubilee grinned a little more, and squeezed her shoulder. “Easy now.”

“Yeah, someone who won’t mind me biting other people.” Mavis could feel the blood rush to her face at that. Was she stalling? Probably. She took another breath, and took a sip from the second bottle, if only to wash down the taste of raw steak. Just a few drops of the thick, coppery-tasting fluid; hardly even a mouthful, but there was something very different about it. Something that suggested it would be disrespectful just to gulp it down, even though her mind was telling her she should not be enjoying this.

Somehow, she recognized on an instinctual level that blood was power, and life, and willing sacrifice. It should be respected. Savored like a fine vintage.

Mavis blinked, and shivered--not entirely unpleasantly--and pushed the bottle back at Jubilee. “I...” She didn’t quite know what to say. It was all just a little overwhelming.

She took the bottle and put her arm around Mavis. Her eyes glinted. Power and life, and so very good. “That’s okay... That’s all you need right now. Is your stomach okay?”

She swallowed, wrapping her arms around herself as she leaned on Jubilee’s shoulder a little, and nodded. She felt a little shaky, but she thought it might be adrenaline rather than nausea. “I think I’ll be okay.”

The older (not by much) vampire rubbed at Mavis’ back in long, slow circles. “Try to find things that make you feel alive, kk? I dunno how it is for you, but when my heart isn’t beating it’s...really hard to remember who I was.”

She nodded, taking a deep breath and letting herself settle. “I’ll try.” She didn’t mind changing, she just didn’t want to lose herself. But she knew she wouldn’t be alone in her exploration of this new facet of herself. “I just...I’m not sure I want an audience the first time I get hot and heavy with somebody. You know?” She laughed nervously. “I mean, I’d rather that than forget that eating someone out isn’t supposed to be taken literally, but...awkward.”

"That's fun too." She grinned, flashing her teeth. “That kinda eating out. And audiences an be a lotta fun with the right people and the right audience. My girlfriend and I sometimes...do stuff for a website.” She eyedarted.

Mavis eyed Jubilee sideways. Okay, so she was a little curious. Maybe a lot curious, but could you blame her? She was eighteen. Besides being at that age where the hormones were bouncing off the walls, she was just plain curious by nature. “I guess I’ll just have to give myself permission to experiment, when I feel ready.”

Jubilee whispered the link, because she was shameless that way. “You ever have a question or a freak out, you can call me kk? Any time! It’s not like I sleep much.”

“‘Kay,” Mavis said, smiling. She was starting to feel a little more relaxed, at least for the moment. She’d just have to take things one step at a time. “Thanks for everything.”

“You’re welcome, chica!” Jubilee kissed Mavis’ cheek. “Wanna get a shake while you can still like ‘em?”

“Yes!” She didn’t even hesitate on that point. The first thing she had discovered, after the fangs and the sunlight, was that dairy didn’t make her sick anymore. If she had to change her diet, being able to eat ice cream wasn’t such a bad consolation prize.

“Ice cream it is! TO THE JUBILEEMOBILE!” She grabbed Mavis’ hand and pulled her off!
